Stranger Things S5 Chapter Eight The Rightside Up FULL REACTION

Comments

Anthony Ancona

Can't wait to see this reaction! 😍 Rob and Trin are the best!

About El's ending. I think what the show is trying to tell the viewer is that this rose colored glasses ending that Hopper and Mike have for El doesn't exist. It never will. Not with people like Papa and Kay in the world. And El knew that. And instead of her life always being dictated by these outside forces, she decided she wanted to take control away from them. In the only way she knew how. And there is something beautiful about that, even though its not the greatest ending we can dream up.

This season is definitely the weakest for me. I don’t know if it’s just me, but where were all the Demogorgons, bats, and dogs? They were all missing. Too many characters; some of the biggest ones don’t really have much to do, specifically Joyce. FYI, there's an animated series coming out really soon, and they're definitely making another spin-off to explore the stone Vecna picked up that we know nothing about.

Octavia

It wasn't perfect... but I found it very emotionally satisfying. The Duffer bros have said that, whichever way you want to perceive it, El had to go forever... because she represented the magic of childhood. And its time was over. (Personally, I don't agree with the sentiment that the magic of childhood has to end. But you do let go of a lot of things when you graduate, move out and start adulting.) I have no doubt though... if they ever decide return to this universe, that Eleven will magically reappear.

Octavia

In a wonderful callback... Dustin fulfilled exactly what Eddie had said (in 4x01) that he was going to do at his own graduation. Eddie: "... I’m gonna walk that stage next month, I’m gonna look Principal Higgins dead in the eye, I’m gonna flip him the bird, I’m gonna snatch that diploma. I’m gonna run like hell outta here. ... This is my year."

season 4 is a masterpiece for me but the entirety of this show is good and the ending got a lot of unnecessary hate... could it have been better? Of course, everything can, but bad endings and bad seasons are certainly not THIS. I just think once the discourse is negative, it's easy to jump on the train and look for everything that's bad Overall ST was a brilliant show that I'll always cherish and rewatch and it was awesome to enjoy it with R&T

I'm boycotting. If I don't watch this reaction, it's not technically over, lol.

As has already been explained by the Duffer's themselves, Vecna never expected them to get to that dimension to begin with, and people seem to think that there's this HUGE army of Demos, but there's not. When Henry first arrives there, we only see like one and one in the distance. It's a pretty scarce population, that genuinely suffered quite a few losses this season alone. And Joyce literally got to cut off Vecna's head, waht else should she have been doing then? Every big character literally gets a prologue as well. So genuinely, waht more should they have done then?

Octavia

I didn't really see it as El being pessimistic. Just realistic. Because Kali wasn't wrong.... the gov't or military would never stop relentlessly coming for their blood, particularly El's. So whoever lived with her... it would always mean running, hiding, and danger. I think there is wiggle room in both interpretations of whether 'portal El' was an illusion or not. The biggest indicator of it being an illusion was not the emitters... especially as there's no proof that they are effective thru the portal... but that 'portal El' had no nosebleed after pulling Mike into her mind for the goodbye. (Her fingers did not glitch in the actual scene. That was Mike's fancy.) But there are also tremendous reaches in Mike's theory... with so much hinging on Kali living long enough to create & hold the illusion, at a distance, knowing exactly when to start it, and sustaining it even after the C4 detonated above her. Perfectly ambiguous.

MSephiroth

I think that's the beauty of it actually, the fact that you can interpret either way. If you want to believe, there's a lot of reason that you can. If you don't, there's reasons for that too.

MSephiroth

Nothing is perfect though, and for me personally, I feel like they did nail it pretty perfectly. It at least gave me everything I wnated, and some more. For me, the only thing taht maybe I would have liked was a moment of Max and Holly after everything, but that's all I can really think of. But of course that's different for everyone, but I really do think it was a very satisfying and awesome finale.

Anthony Ancona

Funny, I am also the Class of '89 too!

Octavia

Yes, a Holly & Max moment afterwards would've been lovely. I'm really happy with it overall. I think they stuck the landing... I got just about everything I could hope for. My one little thing... is that I wanted to know what happened to Dr Sam Owens. In my head canon... if Eleven is alive... and Sam is alive... he is who I imagine her going to for a new identity to disappear under.

James

Let’s go!! Can’t believe this is the finale, stranger things has been such a fun journey to be on. So bear with me here, I’m not sure how to word this comment without getting jumped by people in the comments lol but I’ll try. Almost everything about this season has been great, the visuals, the story, most of the acting. I loved Will the most this season for sure, he’s always been a favorite of mine. Nancy just became a straight up badass, they don’t call that family the “walk em down wheelers” for nothing. Derek and holly also ended up being amazing characters for only just being introduced. My only complaint is the emotional payoff from Mike and Els relationship. Personally I’ve never really found them that good together as a couple, I mean Eleven could barely form a sentence and didn’t even know what the word friend was when they got together that’s not as wholesome as the writers seem to think. Their final kiss goodbye just felt uncomfortable to me like they didn’t want to be there. They haven’t had proper chemistry since like season 2 but this season was way worse there was nothing with them until that finally scene. El deserves better than a boyfriend that needed a full season arc to say “I love you” then in her final moments still couldn’t say the words like bro tell your girlfriend you love her in her final moments. I heard someone say that the reason El chose to speak to Mike instead of Hopper, Will or Max was because she knew Mike was the only person who couldn’t convince her to stay, its funnily accurate. Anyway that story Mike told about El is what he thinks happened, since its up for interpretation i do in fact think El is dead but it’s nice to think she’s still out there. Sorry for the long comment, I love you guys can’t wait for whatever series comes next!

James

They said they cut out scenes with the demogorgons because they didn’t want people to have “demo fatigue”

RedFox333

We know El used her powers to speak to Mike in the black void, and every single time she uses that power she gets a nosebleed. The El we see standing in the gateway never has any blood coming from her nose, proving that it is not really El standing there. We also see that El is sitting right next to Mike the moment before they drive through the gate, and then the soldiers are covering the opening from the moment it opens. If you really think she could sneak out and run over to the gate without anyone noticing I don't think you are using your brain at all. As much as they want to say it is up for interpretation, the evidence is there if you are really paying attention.

el ien

the actress of robin looks so much like her mother - i mean that not surprising ofc but still, you immediately know who her mom is in real life

Octavia

I agree with you about Mike & El. I never got the appeal about 11 yr old El falling for the first person she met... with no socialization whatsoever. It's why I loved it when Max and El became friends... she needed a broader circle to grow. MillieBB is best friends with Noah Schnapp (Will)... and you can feel that in their scenes together. But I dont feel anything between her and Finn. I think it's no coincidence that El & Mike have hardly had any scenes together in the last 2 seasons. Just barely enough for folks to remember that they are supposed to be a couple. I go back and forth on whether El was actually in the portal or not. The lack of any nosebleed seen on 'portal Jane' is the big point to it being an illusion. There are also 2 discernible exhales when the portal collapses. One just as it does... and one right after that captioning reads as 'distant exhale'. But I also think that Mike's version is almost impossible to logically pull off via Kali's situation.

Octavia

I highly recommend the 'Making of Season 5' documentary that dropped earlier this week on Netflix. If you haven't already watched it, I mean. It gave me that welcome extra fix... incredibly interesting to see behind the scenes... and it was emotional (again) to watch everyone filming their final scenes.

SlipS_Tiger

Not saying Joyce didn’t chop off Vecna’s head. I just wanted her and several other big characters to have more to do this season. Each season, they gave Joyce something to do throughout the season. There are just too many characters. And the whole Duffner brother statement means nothing because they don’t really explain it in the show. If anything, they contradict themselves since Vecna knew they were coming to the abyss.

James

I’m glad someone else sees it and it’s not just me. Her and Finn have a cardboard relationship and making it take center stage after being thrown to the side for the last 2 seasons was just dumb. Giving that goodbye scene to Will or Hopper would’ve been so much more impactful, Will is basically her brother they lived together for a long time. Like you said, her and Noah have really great chemistry so that scene would’ve felt just as impactful if not more so. “You understand me, better than anyone else” like what? No he doesn’t, last season was literally all about how he doesn’t understand you

James

We don’t really know how those sonic weapons work. Maybe once she got to the other side of the portal it didn’t affect her anymore allowing her to use her power. I find it illogical that Kali could’ve still be alive to cast that illusion outside of the upside down from miles away while also inside a building that was the center of the explosion. Better yet maybe Kali survived and she and El still planned on dying so she projected Els illusion into the truck with the rest of the crew so they’d assume she’s leaving with them. Then once they got out the truck Kali removes the illusion leaving the real El on the other side of the gate. It’s up for interpretation for a reason, there is evidence on both sides

It's hard to beat season 4. It was truly epic and well done. But season 5 was still great in my opinion. I had its issues, but it was still fun. I think the ending was good. The final fight was absolute nuts! Yeah there weren't demos, but I didn't miss them. And all the character arcs were wrapped up beautifully. As for El's, they gave us a choice. I feel like her sacrificing herself is totally in-character for her. But I'm also fine with Mike's theory. I think in the long-run Mike and El would have the same issues as Nancy and Jonathan. Too much trauma-bonding. And teenage love rarely lasts for a lifetime anyway. So I absolutely loved the ending and even after a half dozen rewatches I still have the tears and snot to prove it!

Amy

Great reaction. I had no idea the episode was so long when I sat down to watch it, I cant believe we've been with these characters for nine years, I was 21 when it first started feels like a life time ago now. This is the first show I've watched where I followed along with the characters as it came out so I loved that we watched them grow up it really did feel like saying goodbye to friends, I cried a lot it was an exhausting few hours. I love that they showed us all the characters lives knowing that they all have each other it was a great way to end it.

Laura Wildsmith

Yaaay I can finally watch this!! Popcorn at the ready 🫶🏻
