"Shark still looks fake." - Marty McFly October 21, 2015 😀

Anecdote here: I love swimming specially swimming far to where buoys are and hang there a while (at least use to when I was in college 20 years ago). But one day I was enjoying my self hanging to the buoy and my foot touched something and I looked down and it was white. I almost did #1 & #2 freaking out 😱 thinking it was a shark and didn't dare to move either. And was thinking why was I here alone and why so far away. 😫 Why didn't I listen to mom... and then I saw it back again, that white large thing closing in on me. And thought this was it for me. It ended up being a large white plastic bag!!! 🤣🤣 after that I stop swimming so far and alone, and If I swim only enough to not touch the ground and with more people. If they go to shore i dont stay alone and go to shore too. haha

Its incredible how well this holds up almost 51 years later. I recently bought the 4K version and it looks like it was made in the last 10 years, its amazing!

Quint’s monologue about the sinking of the USS Indianapolis is based on real events. Many survivors in the water died waiting for rescue, some from injuries, and dehydration, but many were also killed by sharks. Only 316 crewmen survived. Robert Shaw rewrote the monologue himself. It’s regarded as one of the most famous and memorable scenes in the film.

Cindy

Yes, I have read about the USS Indianapolis and what Shaw related was pretty accurate. What is interesting about Shaw's monologue in his own words in the re-telling is Shaw was a British actor and most Americans, let alone a British citizen, were unaware that this happened.

It's crazy we haven't got a good movie adaptation of this story.

Michael Celia

Such a classic. May not be as scary today as it was to moviegoers in 1975, but it's still a master class in suspense. Also earned John Williams his first Oscar for Best Original Score (though he already had one for Score Adaptation for Fiddler on the Roof).

Jan T

Yes, it is surprising. There is a 2016 movie USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage, starring Nicolas Gage, but it was really pretty awful.

Lucinda Michel

The “Get out of the water” scene is considered to be the best dolly zoom in filmmaking history.

Great movie, back in 5th grade at the end of the school year our teacher allowed all of us to pick some "PG" school friendly movies to watch in class, me and my friends trying to scheme up a movie that would be traumatizing to the class we settled on Jaws because it was the only movie we could think of with blood in it and it wasnt PG-13, so we got all the kids to vote for it and I think we put some fake votes in to get it picked, none the less more than 4 kids threw up in terror, 3 were crying, and a bunch probably still have an irrational fear of sharks, Shout out to my teacher for not knowing what Jaws was lol. fun times..

Anthony Ancona

Don't feel bad Rob, I was 5 when this came out. I do remember my parents went to see it with friends and came back traumatized. Lol. I eventually saw it at a special showing and it was a good scary movie!

Nina

That story IS true.

Nina

this still looks better and scarier than any of the CGI sharks I've seen in the last years in movies.

"Your’re gonna need a bigger boat" has become a part of the American lexicon, a sort of all- purpose phrase for "We are woefully unprepared". I remember being most terrified when Hooper saw the head floating near the hole in the hull of that boat. When I was a kid, less than 10, I was swimming in a lake in Quebec and came upon a giant skeletal lobster holding it's giant claws up in front of me. Never swan so fast in my life. Figured I must be seeing things. Didn't tell anyone. Years later, swimming in the same area, I came upon the remains of an old rowboat lying upside down. Most of it was worn away but it's frame was still there and the oars were still pointing up at an angle. Like claws. My giant lobster. This movie put Spielberg on the map. Not long after this, he released Close Encounters of the Third Kind, a sci-fi gem that still holds up today. Hopefully, we'll get a chance to watch it here sometime.

A few things: 1. The black dog at the beach lived. There was a deleted scene showing him. 2. There is a lake in Texas where they put up a big screen and people watch the movie while floating on inner tubes. 3. If you ever rewatch Stranger Things, you’ll notice quite a few homages to Jaws.

Cindy

Thank you for #1. I am like Rob & Trin when it comes to death of animals in movies. Even in 1975 directors should know better. The deleted scene should have been kept in the film.

Fun fact: the “shooting stars” are actually UFO’s it’s suppose to be nod to Stevens obsession with them. The first one you see is an actually one in the film and the others are nods to UFO’s added in post production. Also the tiger shark they pulled was an actual shark By the time of filming, the tiger shark carcass was reportedly rotting, smelling terribly, and required makeup to appear fresh and had to be filmed quickly cause the crew and etc couldn’t handle the smell

Octavia

For Quint... this is like the shark version of Ahab & Moby Dick. By the final act... just pure obsession to pursue it to both of their ends. (That's why he smashed the radio, etc... He didn't want to go back or call for back-up... all that mattered to him was his personal battle against the shark.)
