Even now, on the third viewing, I find this show simply fantastic.

Just a little thing for accuracy's sake, Mariko and Blackthorn didn't sleep together in the previous episode. Fuji and Mariko really did hire a night time companion for him. He just thought he had slept with Mariko because it was dark. That's why he was surprised and discombobulated when after his cheery good morning, they confirmed that they had gotten him a courtesan. I'm sure he was quite disappointed lol!

You know what? I just looked it up which I had failed to do before. I think you're right. She faked the courtesan. It just seemed like a very impulsive thing for Mariko to do.

Mariko also knows that Fuji speaks zero english, so there is no way for her to be corrected when she says it was not her, but Fuji. And of course Fuji just smiles because that is what you do when you don't speak/understand the language.
