v2.9 Ported to Plugdata 0.9.2 🥳

N-SPEC COMP v2.9 for PLUGDATA-FX 0.9.2

N-SPEC COMP is a spectral compressor accompanied by a spectral gate and clipper to create an incredibly versatile audio processor.

N-SPEC COMP  compresses 512 individual frequency bands, giving you extreme control over shaping the frequency response and dynamics of any sound.

From light spectral shaping, ott-like multiband compression and doom-compressor like flattening of spectrums, this plugdata patch allows you to go all in when it comes to shaping your sounds and getting the absolute most out of a frequency spectrum.

The MAIN COMP control sets the DOWNWARD and UPWARD compression ratio.

0% - 50% = Downward compression

50% - 100% = Upward compression (Intense)

ATK and REL control the attack and release for all 512 band compressors. a value of 0 effectively turns N-SPEC COMP into a spectral clipper and turning up just the release turns it into a spectral limiter.

The RESET button resets the spectrum threshold.

MIX can be found to the left of the compression control.

SMOOTH control let's you smoothen out the spectral compression precision, resulting in more natural sounding compression.

The SLIDERS on the sides of the SPECTRUM THRESHOLD graph allow you to easily change the OFFSET and TILT of the spectrum threshold, giving you an easy time dialing in the sound you want.

What makes N-SPEC COMP special is the ability to DRAW YOUR OWN spectrum threshold!

This makes N-SPEC COMP incredibly powerful, as you can enforce your own frequency response onto sounds using spectral compression.

What seperates N-SPEC COMP from other spectral compressors is the OVERTONES module, which let's you dry/wet and amplify dominant frequencies in the spectrum, allowing for crystal clear overtones and formants while compressing the rest of the spectrum.

The graph allows you to set the overall threshold of the spectral gate and lets you draw in additional frequencies and gating for optimal formant seperation. You can drive the main overtone control up to 300% to amplify the isolated formants even further.

N-SPEC COMP comes with a Spectral clipper to the right of the compression control, which solves intermodulation distortion between the 512 bands, effectively maximizing detail preservation when driving the soft clipper harder.

Lastly, N-SPEC COMP comes with accurate RMS and PEAK VU-meters, giving you some context to how loud and consistent your sounds are.

im excited to see a video of you using this

TELLTHETRUTH

Definitely resizing and immediately going for the compression knob! Happened twice 🫡

Nasko

Perfect! Recommend using 100% for now but plugdata 0.9 will have this fixed!! :)

Anthony Robinson

Insane plugin, gonna use this all the time!! Thank you Nasko! Will future releases potentially have the ability to change the FFT window size?

Nasko

possibly! a lot of the functionality is bound to the fixed fft size in n-spec comp, but in future updates im sure itll be easier to implement! :) 1024fft will give you the best middleground, so i'd naturally recommend it for a spectral compressor anyways!

Anthony Robinson

Sweet!! Still an incredible tool at 512, so much easier to use than MSpectralDynamics lol

Anton

Amazing! Would love the knobs to have lil less sensitivity tho

Nasko

are you on win or mac? make sure you use n-spec comp in plugin mode!

ian hicks

Hey! Super cool sound :) thanks for sharing! The delay compensation seems way off in Ableton 12 (Mac). If i drop it on a loop that is synced to the session, it delays the sound by roughly a 32nd note. This gets worse the higher the buffer setting of the session. Is there any way to fix this?

Nasko

hey yea! make sure you have the workspace imported before loading the preset. i recommend watching the N-SPEC COMP Setup video link in this post!

Nasko

next update to plugdata will remove the requirement for the workspace btw!

ian hicks

Thanks for your reply bro! I did that and still running into the issue unfortunately, I made a video reproducing the issue, hope this helps - https://www.dropbox.com/s/g3q5nyrg5s9wtop/spec%20comp.mp4?dl=0 When I turn the plugin between on and off, you can see the active recording being delayed a bit so the transients are off the grid. Delay compensation is turned on in options.

Nasko

actually this might be the looping bug. try not looping the section in your daw and reload plugdata entirely. See if that helps with keeping the same latency compensation?

Modelle

This plugin is brilliant, I have encountered the same issue on Mac live 12 following all the steps perfectly like the user above. but it has worked on a few channels perfectly fine after reloading it a couple times, inconsistent fix tho - just so you're aware! bar that, the interface can sort over scramble when I open the window, then soon as I move a perimeter it fixes itself, Again not a big deal but user feedback is important I'm sure. Fantastic plug in man, love all these devices and patches you make, really pushing into new territory with your sound design understanding, and all the tools have upped my game big time <3

Nasko

tyty! Will forward these issues to the plugdata dev so they can be fixed with the next update! :) There's a bunch of quality of life stuff already coming in 0.9 so every reported issue helps all of us getting an even better version soon! :D

ian hicks

Thanks, I switched to 44.1khz and reloaded all the settings, it's n sync now :) Does this mean that the plugin might not stay synced at 48khz? Minor update - tried it in live 11 and after re-loading the plugin and settings was having the latency issue again via VST3. I switched the AU version which seems to be holding steady.

carper

IT KEEPS CRASHING EVERY TIME I OPEN IT, IM ON ABLETON 12 ON M1 MAC, PLZ HELP!!

Nasko

are you on plugdata-fx 0.8.3? and are you using the plugin mode after loading?

Nasko

hey yea! the au version might not have this bug then! it‘s definitely a latency bug and will be addressed in the next plugdata update! :)

carper

I just installed plug data fx so it should be the newest one, and yes I’m using plugin mode after loading

Nasko

could you record your screen and send me the video via dm‘s here in patreon? that‘ll be easier to identify whats going on! :)

Nasko

Can now confirm this'll be fixed in the next plugdata update! :D

...

Loading Fruity Wrapper presets is quite broken. I'm trying to save a preset that has the spectrum threshold set to an approximate -3dB slope, but loading/saving Fruity Wrapper presets does not preserve the spectrum threshold settings. Very frustrating. I can provide a video of this is needed. It would be very cool if the plugin supported the saving/importing of custom spectrum threshold curves.

Nasko

could you send me a video recording in dm‘s? :)

...

Done 👍

JIBVRENSEI

Is there a way to make UI run smoother? Mine looks like it runs at a lower fps when turning the knobs.

Nasko

theres about 100 frames per dial, but id love for you to record your screen and send me a video on patreon dm`s! :)

2026-09-12 15:00 Love this plugin, but I've been running into a lot of critical production errors: It can crash my entire DAW when trying to move the DSP across channels. It introduces a delay on the channel that is not compensated by my DAW even with delay compensation enabled. The UI does not consistently open to the same view. I found out after bouncing my stems and working on the mixdown that I had to remove the plugin entirely because my stems were slowly drifting out of time. I really think it would be beneficial to provide an installer for this so that we can use it without introducing issues from running it in the development environment in plugdata

Nasko

Hey! The stability issues, latency compensation bug and UI glitches are all going to be fixed with plugdata 0.9 , which is coming very soon! :) These issues you noticed creeped up after i started using plugdata to the max. luckily we caught pretty much all of the issues and all my plugdata patches will receive a patch the same day plugdata 0.9 stable releases! :) Hopefully it'll iron out most of the quirks we're all facing with pd at the moment!

Frank

Sweet, looking forward to it. Really want to keep using it on multiple channels, but it's creating too much additional work to make it worth while at the moment. Will leave it disabled and standby for the update. Best of luck to you all! 🤞For a release schedule

Pythius

Hi I followed all the instructions but I keep having these light gray squares around the buttons which won't go away :') anyone managed to fix that?

Nasko

Hey! Make sure you have the right skin selected from the top left dropdown settings menu! :) You won't have to with the upcoming plugdata 0.9 update anymore though!

Pythius

AH, there was a button with 2 options there that I missed, that solved it. Thank you!

Rev

Are we supposed to be missing the workspace files? Also, not getting anymore visuals for the frequencies ...

Nasko

nope! should be all ready to use! make sure you uninstall 0.8.3 before installing 0.9!

Nasko

try v2.1! :) spectrum analyzer should be fixed now!

Alex

This has simply never worked properly for me in Logic Pro (most recent OS, no pirated anything). There are gray-white boxes around each parameter, and whenever I save a project with n spec comp, the mix is set to 100% upon reopening. I have been paying for your patreon for several months now, and this problem has not gone away. I don't specifically blame you, but at this point, I do feel as though I am being screwed in a way.

Nasko

Please make sure to use the latest version of plugdata (0.9.1) and redownload this patch, as it‘s been updated a ton the past months! :) The mix control resetting is an older bug. Do note that updating both plugdata and the patch won‘t update patches on older projects, as those keep the older patches for backwards compatibility. Lmk if this works for ya!

ViviX

Do you think that in the future it'll be possible to implement descriptions in the plugin itself? Like a help menu or something, coz I have the memory of a goldfish and I'm pretty sure I'm gonna forget what the overtones section does lol. Otherwise from what I've tested so far this is gonna be a game changer for me, so thanks sooo much for this

Nasko

hey thats a cool idea! I might be able to have a help mode toggle, that then lets you hover over things and it shows you a help box with info on the controls! :D

2026-09-12 15:00 Where can I find installation instructions?
2024-09-27 14:17

Nasko

Download & Install plugdata vst3! :) https://plugdata.org/download.html Download this patch and extract the folder somewhere on your pc. then open plugdata-fx vst3 in your daw and click on load patch and head to the extracted folder and select the patch file.

Nasko

Also note to disable plugdatas safety limiter first!

Noah

Thank you!

GATE.wav

You're a wizard. I'm sure of it. Spec-comp is magic

Nasko

Hey! Yes this is normal! Please don't open more than one plugdata patch per plugdata-fx vst instance! :)
