Well I tried a new coloring technique. As you can see, it didn't work out 😂No but for real though, turns out not all processes work for everyone! Who would have thought. I was supposed to do all the shading and values in graytones first, then add the colors. My brain got the first part just fine, but when I went to add the colors.... Let's just say I'm too embarrassed to even think how they look 🫠 BUT I REALLY LIKE THIS GRAYSCALE I GOT OUT OF IT! This Enji was a sketch I made last spring, I'm sure some of you remember the original, I just snatched that to have a base to practice on. I'm not too bummed out about not figuring it out, I'll just try something else next. I just think it's absolutely hilarious that I go in expecting to do stunning colors and walk out with black&white 😂 You people who do visual arts, how do you feel about coloring, following tutorials, etc.? Any similar experiences? I'm curious now!

Holy fucking shittttt. Wow wow wow that is just wow. Dude it looks stylized and cool, I love it

Boobeez

AAAH so smooth ‼️ I love it sm

Oh man was it the ‘trick’ where you color with Overlay layers? I’ve never been able to figure that out 😭💔 This looks absolutely GORGEOUS in greyscale, though!! I love the use of value, particularly in the fire being the same as the background. And of course the rendering in general is absolutely gorgeous 🙏💕

Meagan

Incredible!!

Rael

AAA yes I do this sometimes! It can annoy me a bit because I feel like it takes far too long compared to when I just go straight in with colour! I love the greyscale rendering though, he looks amazing!

Riley

WHOA this looks so cool!!! It's neat to experiment even if things don't turn out like you plan!

Jo

contributing nothing to the discussion other than LOUD BARKING SOUNDS. god he looks gorgeous here, the greyscale works great with this sketch! also...not to be perv but goodness Enji looks particularly Juicy in this one. love the stretch of fabric and how his flesh is straining through the torn bits.

Haha Hala

It turned out so pretty though 🥺

eldritchblast

'it didn't work out' WHAT DO YOU MEANNN THIS LOOKS SO GOOD

StuckInAPit

Thank you! The base really captured what I was going for, even if the colors didn't quite make it there 😅

MoistTowelette

Dude it’s perfect! I absolutely love it. I like how it’s simple but at the same time it ain’t

ElderberryElias

IT LOOKS AMAZING!! Honestly I love seeing the WIPs and the testing of different styles/theories, so I'd legit pay to see that (Im also paying to see Enji's dick but we all know that 🤣)

StuckInAPit

Thank you! It was a method where you'd lay flat colors under the shading and then overlay gradient maps onto the shading to give it vibrancy, it felt like such a hassle to wrap my silly little head around 😅

StuckInAPit

Yesss I know it's likely more about getting used to the process but damn this way took so much time 😂 Maybe it would work better if the different stages got switched, flat colors first and then this type of shading? 🤔Thank you!

StuckInAPit

Thank you! And it really is! I feel like a dog trying to crack open a puzzle game to get the treats😂

Xx

That looks so beautiful and clean! Color or not. You already have such great skill!

StuckInAPit

Yes this was the gradient map thing I was trying out here! It looks cool in tutorials but I'm so set in my ways, much like you describe sometimes the colors just appear 😂🤝

StuckInAPit

Oh come on we're all pervs here and you know it 😎 Thank you!🙏💕

StuckInAPit

I MEEANNN....💦💦💦💦 the shading I really like but I cannot emphasize how goofy the attempted colors looked 😂 (thank you 💕)

FunnyLittleCreature

LITERALLY me a few weeks ago. I was super happy with the black and white I did tho. Yours looks amazing!

GDR

Looks amazing, he’s like a marble statue here 🥺 I adore this

Bee bee

I actually love this! I love any art you do right but don’t be bummed out it looks amazing !! I have trouble with colors to but oddly looking a clothing designs help me match things

Ohhhhhh!! So this is what you meant by colouring, you also meant the rendering as well! It definitely looks really nice! Shame we don't get to see what it looks like in colour. Definitely has an interesting 3D kinda feel to it! That dick *chefs kiss* Sometimes greyscale rendering is/can be difficult to then translate it into colour, because you have to be mindful of not just brightness but how hue interacts with different greys, I also tried to work this way for a bit, and it took awhile to wrap my head around it. (the below ways of colouring I learnt from a youtube artist called Marc Brunet) A way I learnt was to use the gradient maps in Clip Studio, where you section off each part you want to colour, and you then use the gradient maps to add your colour, adjusting it till you find what you want, until you have section by section added colour to the whole thing. Another method I learnt was you start with flat colours, and then use greyscale to render over those flat colours, it looks super weird at first, but then once you section parts off and use the gradient maps you then slowly work your way with adding in the colour. hmmm i don't really have any other ways that start with some form of greyscale, all my other ways of using colour is that I start with colour and adjust it as I go, and then at the end I use gradient maps (again) to adjust and tweak all my colours to make them a bit more harmonious. But in the end, what do I know, I got my ass handed to me last night by the rendering on a fucken bathroom background I was doing xD

went to school for graphic design but now I work in retail. some tutorials worked for me some I got super confused on. I loved two Photoshop tutorials that showed me how to make realistic dew drops and make new photos look western yellow. Anything else more complicated confused the heck out of me. 😂 Everyone has different talent levels. you can either learn, keep trying or never try and go into retail. SO PLEASE KEEP trying and never stop learning cause you are AWESOME SAUCE!!!! I love your art!! 🤩🥳

Tanja (hakuchin)

This grayscale looks absolutely stunning 😍 I love it! Samdoesarts did a follow along once where he tried this as well and realized that it was a lot of work and layer blending to make it look okay to good. It was an interesting process to see. I like using tutorials to teach myself, but some just aren't very good, or just not for me. All the more when it comes to certain aprts like logo design, where I need more guidance and people just say "well, and then design that logo with ai" and Imtlike "what. That's not how this should work tho?"

I’ve always found doing greyscale prior to flats is extremely unintuitive. I’ve always worked by colour blocking first and pulling in shadows tonal variation as needed. People who greyscale first are terrifying. How do they do it without their colours looking weird???

A

I've tried it multiple times following various tutorials and it's always come out a mess at the other end. But on the plus side I've reached the point now with my colouring where I wouldn't want to go back. It's nice to see I'm not alone in my struggles.

PinataGoddess

You'd think after the Nomu, he would learn to wear underpants... or at least a jockstrap. Also, I love your greyscale ❤️❤️❤️

Ashyscribbles

Oh, I remember 15 years ago a friend and I got into digital drawing at the same time and she was doing more semi realism with greyscale to colors and it looked great. Then I tried to follow the tutorial she linked me and it didn't look great at all and I never tried this again 😅
