about the meat marionettes. As I explained to Burnside, it was just a lucky guess. Speaking of which...
Once again, the majority of you are correct in your surmise. We did take the girls with us. Now that I think about it, every time I've given you an opportunity to guess what happens next, the majority has always been right. Almost as if you KNOW. Curious. Have my adventures already been published somewhere that I don't know about?
. . .
"We must take the girls with us," Rebecca insisted. "I don't want to leave them unsupervised, and it will be good field experience for them. If the university is filled with people, it seems unlikely that this Edessa character would make a scene in her own crowded institution. Plus, I have every faith that you will be able to bring this Unseelie femme down before she has a chance to try anything."
"She probably wouldn't make a scene," I agreed, "but there’s always the chance. I suppose Burnside and I could probably hold her back if she started any trouble. Plus, your students need not be present when I confront Eddessa. Very well, we shall bring them!"
"I'll pick my favorite filletin' knife for the occasion," Burnside declared enthusiastically. "Ain't never gutted a queen before!"
"Why must you always go immediately to deadly violence?" I began to reprimand Burnside, but then I remembered all the sorrow Edessa had caused me. She also played a major role in the death of Estmere. "Let's keep murder as a last resort. It will depend on what she says."
"By Fuma!" Rebecca exclaimed. "There's a lot to do! We need to pack our essentials and get signed permission from all the girls’ parents. How far is it? How long will we be gone? Oh, this is so exciting! Girls, FIELD TRIP!!!"
Burnside, Rebecca, and the student witches suddenly went into a whirlwind of activity, running this way and that all over the camp, gathering things they would need for the trip. I offered to help, but they insisted that such trifles were beneath me. I didn't know where anything was anyway, so I stepped aside and watched the pandemonium ensue.
It actually didn’t take long for them to pack their essentials together, but then Rebecca had to take the witches into town to get permission from the girls’ parents. "Make yourself at home, My Lord," she said to me as she herded her students down the path. "This could take a while."
I sat down on a log to wait. Burnside sat beside me and proceeded to stare at me with a big, goofy grin on her face.
"I really missed you while you was gone," she finally said after a long, uncomfortable silence.
"I can tell."
