Today was a heck of a busy day (and no, it had nothing to do with these pictures). There has been a discussion in the chat (that's right, higher tiers have access to a "live" chat) about black walnuts.

Behold the overenthusiastic tree in my yard! It's not very big but look at how it is weighted down with what looks like a truckload of very ugly Christmas ornaments. Most other trees in the neighborhood have already dropped their nuts, but this one seems too proud of its efforts to let them go. In the last panel I laid a hulled & cleaned nut next to one of the raw ones for comparison. Anyway, that's what they look like "in the wild." Takes a little bit of work to get to the edible part, but I did absolutely nothing to help them grow so I'd still put this in the category of Least-Effort Farming.

I did mow around the tree when I spotted it coming up five years ago. Or was it six? Anyway, the point is that the tree is now here because I deliberately allowed it. I suspected it was some kind of nut; I was hoping for pecans (it's hard to tell them apart until they produce fruit) but walnuts are, in my opinion, tastier so I don't regret the result. Native Americans also practiced this sort of "half agriculture" where they looked at what was already growing and then encouraged the plants they had a use for.
