the femmes and I gathered just outside of the Scrying Tower, in readiness for our expedition. I turned to address Meadow and everyone listened.

“Now we've got some time to go on an excursion," I began. "The trees will continue cleaning up the fields around Albric Tor, but I don't want them trying to clean the city itself. They're too likely to tear up the streets and buildings with their roots. We'll save that task for when Eltsac Mailliw is fully healed, which gives us some time to do something else. Now then, Meadow, as you said earlier, there are two places we can reach directly from here using the Gate. The first is Athstead, the Birthplace of Irenaeus, where I once went on a quest in which I received a vision from Fuma and gained her blessing of Luck. The second is a marshy region of Faerie where a community of Seelie elves have returned to living according to the Old Ways of our tribal ancestors. You told us that Athstead is suffering from a depressed economy due to their limited farmland and the scarcity of any sort of outside trade due in no small part to the sad fact that very few elves know how to use the Gates. The marsh community that you mentioned is living in the shadow of a monastery that has forsaken the worship of our blessed Lady Fuma and instead is the headquarters of a cult that worships a giant fish that I may know all too well.”

“Yes," Meadow nodded. "Yes, I did tell you all of that.”

“She did, my lord," Rebecca nodded cheerily. "We were all present.”

“Is there a reason why you explained it all again word-for-word?” Burnside asked.

“Well, uh," I floundered. "It seemed important to reiterate it, you know. Bring everyone up to speed. Someone might have forgotten.”

“I remember," Thomson confirmed. "It was only a day and a half ago. But in another way it seems like ages ago. It feels good to get out of that grimy bathrobe. What luck that we found a trove of Floozy clothes.”

"I'd have been surprised if we didn't find any," Meadow sniffed, "considering how many Floozies Estmere kept around. With all of the outfits available, why did you choose that one?"

"It's comfortable," Thomson shrugged.

There was an awkward pause as they all turned to me with expectant looks. “Well, good,” I nodded with regal authority. “It is time for us to decide where we shall go first. Athstead seems like the prime choice for our first destination: A well established settlement with historic ties to the empire would be a good ally that will owe us a favor after we help them. We may need all the help we can get for whatever evils are plaguing the elves in the Marshy Region. However, if the fish god this cult worships is the one I am thinking of, their peril may be more dire than we know. Time could be of the essence. So perhaps we should go there first. Or, since whatever's happening there has been happening all this time without us, we could go see Kelly first, and THEN choose a destination in Faerie.”

“Well then, where do YOU think we should go first?” I asked, turning and pointing.

Are you asking me?” the Shrub guard rustled nervously. I'm just a privet."

Hmm . . . I'll take what's behind Door Number Three. Seriously. See your daughter, and go sort out the Marsh Elves and the fishy cult.

number 3 seems most important really

>Privet: You stutter as you rustle out your thoughts. Shrubs can stutter? “Well, uh, I guess you should visit your daughter first, make sure she’s safe and healthy. And, maybe, you don’t need to decide on which destination in Faerie should visit first right away? Perhaps… Perhaps you could send a few of your companions to scout out both locations for you so you can make a fully informed decision when you are finished with your fatherly responsibilities… If you think that’s a good idea, I mean…” >Adler: Your eyes light up. “That’s a fantastic idea, Privet! You’ve got a good head on your shou- uh, you’ve got a good trunk on your roots! I see a promising career ahead of you.” >Privet: “Aw, shucks.” You rustle modestly. >Adler: You turn to your companions. “We shall go with the Privet’s idea!” You wait for volunteers. >Meadow: “Um, gladly, but you’re the only one hear who speaks tree. So…” You look at him expectantly. >Adler: “Right! Right. Well, I believe we should split up.” You freeze, that was that meddling youth’s favorite thing to say. “What I mean, is that I and a few others should go visit my daughter Kelly and at least two of you, one per destination, goes to scout out Athstead and the other goes to survey the marshy region.” You turn to Meadow. “Meadow, as a very capable, and seelie agent,” You give a meaningful side glance to Burnside. “I would like you to go scout our this Marshy Region and see what kind of danger these tribal elves are in. I have a feeling something dark is afoot, so you are the only one I trust to go there alone.” >Meadow: “It feels weird to separate again after just having been reunited, but I understand your thinking.” You pause for a moment. “Depending on the situation there, I may not be able to return to you right away. Do you have something we can use to instantly communicate?” >Adler: Your brain lights up. “Yes, I have two crying orbs that I, uh, acquired. You can use it to keep me abreast of the situation as it happen.” You think to yourself that you finally have a use for those orbs after getting them so very long ago. >Meadow: You accept the orb and tell Adler the route to get there on his own if you are unable to return to him. “Now, that leaves the question, who will you send to Athstead? Surely not the Raccoon. She will probably massacre everyone there just for fun.” >Burnside: “Don’t knock it ‘til you try it, little miss tin-cans. I wouldn’t go there anyway. As the imperial bodyguard it is my job to guard the imperial body.” You give a self-satisfied smirk. >Adler: You wouldn’t send Burnside on a scouting/diplomatic mission alone anyway. You shudder in horror at the potential carnage that flashes through your mind. “I wasn’t planning on sending here…” You look at Rebecca and Thomson. You certainly can’t send either of them. Thomson is… Not well, and Rebecca is still green. >Thomson: You are whispering your dark thoughts into Mr. Calaveras’s temporal bone. >Rebecca: “My lord, why don’t you have your bug servants scout out Athstead?” You suggest helpfully. >Adler: Oh yeah, you forgot about them. It’s been a while since you saw them last. Where were they while you were being chased by a lunatic with a mace?? Yo call out to your Ixies. A familiar looking ixie wearing a helmet accompanied by two others flutter up to you. “Typantron?” >Typantron III: “Not quite, my lord. I am Typantron III, ready and able to do the bidding of the imperial crown, SIR!” You click your heels together and form a crisp salute. The other two ixies awkwardly try to do the same. >Adler: “Well, your demeanor is certainly more professional.” >Typantron III: “It shames me to my core that our forbears were such undisciplined cretins, sir. I can assure you there will be no lollygagging, sugar sucking, aphid gambling, or boondoggling on my watch, SIR!” >Other ixies: “Just penny-stocks!” You all giggle impishly. >Typantron III: Your professional demeanor breaks “Guys! You’re making us look bad! Don’t embarrass me in front of great-great-grandpa!” You whine. >Adler: Ah, this is more what you’re used to. “Yes, well, I have a mission for you. I want a small dispatch of you to go to Athstead and scout the place out. Find out everything that could be useful in opening diplomatic relations to them. Also, I know how my life works, there is sure to be some kind of catastrophic trouble there that we’ll need to fix. Find out what that is. Once you have all the information you can get meet me at my daughter’s home. Understood” >Typantron III: You salute again, a little too hard as you knock you helmet askew. “Sir, yes, SIR!” >Other Ixies: You all start having a giggling fit. “A mission! A mission! We’ve got a mission!” You all say in a sing-song voice as you flutter away. >Typantron III: “Come one, guys! Stop that! We’re supposed to be professional spies! Seriously, quit it!” You whine as you trail behind the rest of them. >Rebecca: “Every time I meet them, your ladybirds just keep getting cuter and cuter.” >Thomson: “Mr. Calaveras has a bad feeling about this…” >Adler: “Let’s depart, shall we?” You say, trying to get things moving along.

Didn't Adler give the other scry orb to Vernier? Since I can't remember and didn't have time to check, I changed it to something better (i.e. funnier)

He kept both orbs and used them to make a mask to talk to during his isolation. The mumble mugs are funnier though.
