Here are a few details, because, as the books get longer, more and more stuff is bound to be ommitted from the movies. I'll break it up into several parts so that it'll be easier for me to write down. First of all, the reason why the Dursleys know that Harry isn't allowed to do magic outside of school is because Harry received a Howler from The Ministry of Magic at the beginning of The Chamber of Secrets, when Dobby used the Levitation Charm to make the cake float, and The Ministry thought it was him, because they were unaware that Dobby was with him at the time.

The thing that seemed crucial in the movie, AND WAS crucial in the books is how Sirius escaped from Azkaban. The books actually tell us that when he arrived at Azkaban he was both so distraught and weakened (both mentally and physically) that he couldn't properly transform to escape. But when Cornelius Fudge came to visit him one day, Sirius saw in a newspaper that Cornelius had an article about The Weasleys winning in a magical lottery and going to Egypt. In that newspaper, Sirius saw an image of Scabbers with one missing toe and immediately connected it with Peter cutting off his finger, which gave him the strength and determination to finally transform into his dog form and escape. And because dementors can only detect human emotions (because of how complex they are), they didn't notice Sirius escaping.

Thirdly, it was never said explicitly, but Prongs, Padfoot, Moony, and Wormtail refers to James, Sirius, Remus and Peter, accordingly. Also the reason why James, Sirius and Peter specifically became Animagi was so that they could help Remus feel less alienated when he became a werewolf.

Also, no, you can't choose the animal you transform into as an animagus. As someone on the internet described it, your animal form as as an animagus is like your spirit animal. It takes the form that reflects your inner self.

And about who told on Lupin, you'll probably not be surprised that that was Snape.

The reason Harry has to keep returning to the Dursely's every summer is because, when Harry's mother cast herself in front of the curse cast by Voldemort, Dumbledore was able to weave a charm in order to protect Harry and when he left Harry on Petunia and Vernon's doorstep, he left him with a letter explaining everything to Petunia.

From the book: "While you can still call home the place where your mother's blood dwells, there you cannot be touched or harmed by Voldemort. He shed her blood, but it lives on in you and her sister. Her blood became your refuge. You need return there only once a year, but as long as you can still call it home, there he cannot hurt you. Your aunt knows this. I explained what I had done in the letter I left, with you, on her doorstep. She knows that allowing you houseroom may well have kept you alive for the past fifteen years."

SeanBoi

"She may have taken you grudgingly, furiously, unwillingly, bitterly, yet still she took you, and in doing so, she sealed the charm I placed upon you. Your mother's sacrifice made the bond of blood the strongest shield I could give you."

Also - the reason for the whomping willow prominence is that it ties in with Lupin. Lupin was attacked when he was a child and turned into a werewolf by Fenrir Greyback. Dumbledore made allowances for Lupin to be able to attend Hogwarts. The tree was planted overtop a tunnel leading to the Shrieking Shack. A place that Lupin would go to transform into a werewolf each month. People started the rumor about it being haunted because people would hear the noises Lupin would make.
