Great reactions! Enjoy listening to your perspective on not only the story but the film making process. Like some others have said. If you ever go back to rewatch these films again. Watch the extended versions. lots of deleted scenes that add much to the story. Peter had to cut almost 40 min off each film because they were already 3 hour movies for the theatre. Also the whole journey from when they set out from the Shire to the end took about 13 months actually. I believe Frodo mentions it near the end of the movie.

The book describes why Denethor (Faramir and Boromirs father) is the way he was. He changed when his wife, mother of his sons, died soon after the birth of Faramir. Faramir wasnt the warrior Boromir was, he was more the "student" of Gandalf, who Denethor disliked. But the biggest reason Denethor was like he was, is because he had one of the all seeing stones that Sauron and Saruman had. Denethor was strong because he was able to not fall for Saurons seduction through the stone, something Saruman failed. So Denethor was more complex as a character in the books.
