My interpretation is that the guy is being fooled by the woman in the painting posing as his wife still in order to… convert him to the painting?

My assumption is that the lady was legitimately trying to save Steve and Sally. Or at least take Steve for herself. But everything is just a guess at this point. Anya is growing the suspense. Among other things.
