Flecks of [Battleguard] adrenaline still glimmered in Matt’s gaze while they finished up dinner. The dark circles around his eyes and bloodshot whites had eased up since they’d left Ronona, but Sam could still read the exhaustion on his face clear as day. As if him crawling on all fours like a dog wasn’t an obvious enough sign. Regardless, it was clear that their tussle in the dirt earlier hadn’t yet left either of their minds.

Sam had never been around a man for so long. Sure, Cailu stopped by the castle whenever Nehalennia commanded, but his attention was always on the queen. Not that Sam wanted to catch Cailu’s attention. That man was colder than a corpse in winter.

But Matt… Matt was funny and awkward and genuinely nice. He came off like a budding new recruit, and it was charming how he tried to steal glances in the most obvious ways and then averted his gaze when she caught him. Like a kitten with her hand in a fresh batch of cookies. Really, though, Sam had snuck in more than a handful of her own side-eyed glances. Especially in the castle bath. She’d just hidden it far better.

So when she’d suggested they clean up in the river, Sam had certain expectations.

Just as Matt hefted the last spoonful of stew to his mouth, Sam stood and slipped the black top over her head, leaving nothing to the imagination. Matt’s spoon halted mid-motion, spilling broth on his trousers. With a chuckle, Sam tossed the shirt aside and started unfastening her belt buckle.

Matt cleared his throat. “Not gonna wait until we get to the river?”

“Nah. It’ll be easier to find my clothes here.” Sam kicked off her boots, then slowly rolled her pants down over her hips, eyes never leaving Matt’s face. A new hunger consumed his expression. She lifted her tail and wagged it behind her, bending forward to pull her legs free one at a time. Her bare chest brushed against her thighs as she did.

“You, uh, wouldn’t happen to want something?” Matt asked. “Would you?”

Sam straightened, letting the fire’s light lick her sunkissed skin. “I wanna have some fun, Matt.” Taking two steps forward, Sam caught Matt’s wrist, lifted the spoon to her lips, and placed what remained of his dinner on her tongue. The expression on his face was worth all the Bells in Ronona. She withdrew and grinned. “Don’t you?”

Without another word, Matt tossed the bowl and spoon aside, stood, and whipped off his shirt.

“I just have one request,” Sam said.

“Name it.”

“I don’t want a kitten. Not right now.” There was too much to do. Too much to oversee. And Saoirse’s tits, the thought of someone like Captain Celestine taking over her unit made her gag.

Matt shrugged. “Alright.”

“Good.” Sam grinned, then tilted her head to the side. “I won’t make this easy.” Before he could ask what she meant, Sam turned and launched herself into the forest with a whooping howl.

Freedom. Unequal, uninhibited freedom.

This was where she belonged. Barefoot in the forest, with the moon in her hair and rustling leaves against her skin. Watching trees catch spells in the air with their branches and feeling the occasional fluff of an Encroacher against her calf. Not stuck in the castle, surrounded by fancy soaps and silks and nobles. Not playing petty politics with the likes of Captain Celestine and Penmaster Marin.

Twigs snapped behind her, followed by a series of quiet grunts.

“You’re about as sneaky as a rotusk in heat!” Sam cried over her shoulder.

“Maybe that’s my spirit animal!” Matt’s voice echoed back.

Sam furrowed her brow and slowed her run. “Your what?”

Strong arms wrapped around Sam’s waist, tackling her to the ground. She squealed and let herself fall with the momentum, rolling over and under Matt through soft grass and piles of tree leaves. They came to a stop on their sides, Matt embracing her tightly against him. He’d managed to shield her from the stones and sticks that should have nicked her skin.

Matt’s chest was hot against hers, and the fabric of his trousers brushed up against her legs.

“You’re still wearin’ pants?” Sam laughed and squirmed inside his hold.

“I wouldn’t have caught up to you otherwise.” Matt snagged her short hair in one hand and held her steady as he bit her ear. “It won’t stay that way for long.”

Sam shivered with the heat of his breath, reaching down to his belt. But instead of unhooking it, she toyed with the clasp between her fingers, flicking the metal and stalling as if she were confused until Matt’s impatience won, and he let her go to assist her.

“Ha!” Sam jumped to her feet and bolted.

“Hey!” Matt laughed.

“You can do better than that!” Sam let out another whoop of joy and ran until the scent of running water caught her nose. Making minor adjustments to her route, she flew at full speed toward the river.

A breeze tousled her hair and tickled her eyelashes. Goosebumps bloomed over her skin and a delicious chill rushed down her spine. The thrill of the hunt flowed through her, except she was the prize. She could wonder about what happened next once he caught her.

Oh, there was certainly plenty of talk about what kinds of things catgirls could do with men. Her soldiers would whisper and giggle and exchange books with some very detailed diagrams when they thought Sam wasn’t looking. And then she’d found this one ridiculous book about two men and a catgirl in Lieutenant Erith’s quarters. The exaggerated descriptions had made Sam roll her eyes and chalk it up to ridiculous fantasy.

None of it mattered, really. Half of the excitement was not knowing the next steps.

The sound of water striking rocks echoed in the distance, tweaking Sam’s ears in its direction. Curiously, the sound of Matt’s heavy footsteps had vanished behind her.

I left him in my dust, she thought with a chuckle.

At last, the trees opened up to the churning river, where the moonlight illuminated the ripples on its surface. Sam jumped, pulling her knees to her chest and tucking her tail beneath her legs as she splashed into the water. Cold rushed upward from the tips of her toes to the tops of her ears, washing away the sweat, dirt, and grime she’d accumulated throughout Matt’s training.

Kicking her feet off the riverbed, Sam launched herself to the surface and snapped her head back. The water felt so much cleaner and more natural than the bath in the castle. It felt like home. She flattened her ears against her head and ran her hands through her hair.

As quick as a strike of lightning, one hand caught both wrists and another wrapped around her tail, stroking it in a way that made Sam’s breath catch in her throat. A warm, sturdy thigh pushed up against her flank.

“H-How—?!” Sam stammered.

“You thought you’d lost me,” Matt laughed softly. Sam shuddered. How the hell was he doing that with her tail? “I went upriver.”

“A-ah…”

“I even ditched the pants,” he growled, running his hand down the full length of her tail.

Sam smirked. His grip on her wrists was so tight that she knew she could lift her feet without him noticing. So she did. Placing them flat against the river’s wall, she kicked hard and twisted at the same time, breaking Matt’s hold and pinning him against the opposite wall. Her chest was flush with his, knees carving indents into his thighs. Against her stomach lay his throbbing shaft, the head just below her navel. Her heart skipped a beat.

“You just don’t give up, do you?” Matt said, glancing at her hands on his wrists.

“Never. And neither should you.” Water glistened from the ends of Matt’s hair. She rolled to the balls of her feet and licked a droplet from the tip of his nose. “Show me what you’re made of, Matt.”

The embers in his eyes surged to an inferno. His smile was sharp as he raised his arms above his head, higher and higher, lifting her up until his mouth claimed hers.

She’d never tell him, but this was her first kiss.

Excitement bubbled in her stomach and made her breathless. His tongue traced the opening to her mouth, and she let him in, settling into a mirrored rhythm with his lips. His eager exploration made her dizzy with pleasure, and her fingers relinquished his wrists, sliding down his forearms and biceps until twining behind his neck. Even in the cold water, her skin was searing.

Matt grabbed her by the waist and lifted her from the river, setting her on the grassy bank before hauling himself from the water. Crawling on all fours, he aligned himself on top of her. Sam’s gaze flickered between his face and the erection brushing her thigh, and the aching pulse between her legs was impossible to ignore.

Sam bucked her hips upward, throwing her weight into rolling him to his back, but Matt was ready this time. One hand snatched her hip and pinned it to the ground; the other collected her wrists in one swift gesture and held them above her head.

“Jesus, you’re feisty,” Matt mused, his breath hot against her lips.

“Never give up.” Sam playfully flicked her tail, spraying droplets over his still-wet chest.

Holding her down, he snatched her second kiss, this one far more urgent and deep. His tongue slid down her throat, forcing her to part her mouth wider. This was the Matt she’d pulled free before supper. This strong, starved beast that demanded dominance. In response, her fingers stilled and her muscles relaxed.

Breaking their kiss, he murmured, “‘Never’ didn’t last very long.”

“Damn it, Matt, I have a reputation to keep.” The same blush he’d so rudely called attention to earlier rose to her face. “I…dunno what to do from here,” she admitted.

“You’re being cute again.” Matt nibbled her lower lip. His tone struck a dangerous balance of teasing and delicious. Sam’s grumbles were lost inside of his mouth.

Releasing her wrists, he traced the line of her jaw with his fingers, followed her throat, and journeyed across her collarbone. When he gently brushed across her nipple, Sam gasped for air and wrapped her arms behind his neck.

Everything was so damn sensitive. Those stupid books were never supposed to be right.

Matt’s hand traveled lower, caressed her stomach, pressed into the divot inside of her hip. Sam’s heart hammered against her chest, and she coiled her tail around his back. He parted her thighs and two fingers traveled where only her own fingers ever had. But his were much larger, pushing her limits as they slid inside her heat.

A moan vibrated in Sam’s chest and throat, and she wriggled against his palm, urging him to explore deeper, press harder. Instinct begged to replace that hand with his cock. It was far more difficult to ignore than she thought it would be. Especially when he—

“Mnf!” Sam’s thighs quivered as his thumb massaged her clit.

Goddess above, this was a duel where she was entirely outmatched. But she’d never let it be said that she wasn’t a quick learner.

Sam reached down between them and stroked the length of his shaft with her fingertips, tracing its shape and noting its lines as she would a new weapon. Their mouths parted, and Matt tipped his forehead against hers, his fingers still kneading her depths like a master of his craft.

“Teach me, Matt,” Sam commanded. “You can be my—ngh—m-mentor.” Ugh. She sounded like a stammering princess.

“Wrap your hand around me… Yeah, like that… Now pump up and down— Ah! Too fast!” Matt hissed. With a flinch, Sam immediately slowed. “T-that’s better. Yeah…just like that…”

Once she’d found the right rhythm, it was easy to keep. Matt matched her speed, adding a third finger to the two already inside of her, stretching her walls and arching her back. His other hand shifted from her hip to her tail, resuming that maddening stroke that made her flank and thighs tingle with delight.

Saoirse’s tits. Matt might not have known how to clean a weapon, but he tended to Sam with the same care and know-how as she did with her axe. Tension mounted between her legs. Her body ached with need each time his fingers slid outside of her. Her hips rocked against his hand outside of her command. A whimper escaped her lips.

“Come for me, Sam,” Matt said.

She wished she had a witty reply at the ready, but her mind was saturated with pleasure. The whole world caressed her skin and the sky filled her eyes. Her climax opened her to everything: the smell of water, the tickle of grass, the gaze of the stars. She pumped him faster—not too fast—as the convulsions throbbed and her eyes rolled back.

“Oh, God. I’m close.” Matt’s voice was a thousand miles away.

Sam kissed him, this time breaking through his lips with her tongue. Resting her hand on the back of his neck, she explored every inch of his mouth, stole back some of her breath. Some of her control.

Matt groaned, and the sound vibrated down her throat. His grip around her tail tightened, and the fingers inside her curled. Hot, viscous liquid sprayed over her stomach, coating her abdomen and breasts in a sticky substance that Sam hadn’t expected to be so…abundant.

A breeze whispered them a song in the trees as her thoughts returned and the pulsing waned. When the muscles in her thighs relaxed, she broke their kiss and looked down.

“No one tells ya about this part,” she said.

“What part?” Matt’s breathing rasped as he carefully withdrew his hand.

Sam chuckled and released his shaft, dragging her finger through the coating on her stomach. “How messy this is.”

Matt snorted. “Well, see, it’s a lot cleaner if you want a kitten.” He nodded toward the river. “Besides, we’re here to clean up, aren’t we?”

“True. Nowhere better to be to get down and dirty, right?” Sam frowned when Matt laughed. “What? What’s so damn funny now?”

“I don’t think that saying means what you think it means.” Matt straightened and shrugged. “Anyways. It’s bath time.”

Snatching Sam by the waist, he tumbled backward. She cackled as they went crashing into the water together.

Let's fucking goooooooooo! You know how long i've been waiting for this? The chase certainly seems like it'd make things more exciting. > And then she’d found this one ridiculous book about two men and a catgirl in Lieutenant Erith’s quarters. The exaggerated descriptions had made Sam roll her eyes and chalk it up to ridiculous fantasy. I wonder if this might possibly be the *updated* version, after some men helped Svarga get some more acurate data to work with
