GAH I love this episode. It's one of my favourites. Nothing supernatural or spooky, just grounded family heartbreak.

For me with this one, the first time I remember watching this episode holding my breath, waiting for the other shoe to drop. I was very worried for the grandson especially, I had a horrible feeling something would happen to him and that would be the consequence of Patrick’s actions. And then when it didn’t, it was like a proper sigh of relief, which I think is what they were going for. They know what they’re doing, and I think the suddenness of the end was very intentional. That’s my take on it at least.

I agree. And definitely agree that i was terrified for the boy. I was screaming for him to get away 🤣

For me having the title in mind at all times was really useful. Love’s great adventure… the day to day struggles of family life, sometimes mundane sometimes dramatic, all part of the big picture of life. That’s why the ending was just them professing their love for each other… there is something achingly beautiful about this, at first glance simple episode, especially on a rewatch.

Lots of people seem to miss that it was the mother that ran down the dealer in that car crash. Whether she knew who he was or not isn't clear so you can interpret that how you like. That's the twist for me, it's just hidden more than the other ones; the mother knew (mothers tend to find out stuff) and ran him down on purpose, and Sheersmith helped her cover it up, though whether intentionally or not.
