Lately it feels like their only "joke" is just admitting to punching down and then complaining that people don't like them punching down lol. Are streaming services actually paying people to do these shows???

So true. It sucks to see small comedians that get big too fast. Their egos explode and they feel like gods gift to man. It makes them lash out when they realize their 15 minutes are already wrapping up

"Now where's my $20 million Netflix special?"

Tim

My favorite stand up joke of all time is from John Mulaney: “If you donate to your old college after spending $120k on tuition, then college is a $120k hooker, and you are an IDIOT who fell in love with her! SHES NOT GONNA DO ANYTHING ELSE FOR YOU!! ITS DONE!!!!”

The first Tom Segura special I saw I thought "this guy is my new favourite comedian!" and now.....just blah

Mike Weller

That's exactly who I was thinking about 😭

Androjaneous

No, they're versatile! They also have a joke about trans women. Actually, that's the whole joke, there's not usually much structure to it.

Kathryn Fortunato

Not exactly what we used to call "politically correct" but I am pleased to see a few who have stayed true, like Chris Titus, and on the complete opposite end you have folks like John Oliver, who I still cannot get over being so loudly and proudly on the right side of history.

"TRANS PEOPLE, AMIRIGHT???" *audience explodes in maniacal laughter* That's all I've ever seen, and I never once got it lol. And that stupid "I identify as [inanimate object] joke

Adam Goss

That nerdy engineer comedian Don McMillan is also guilty of this, albeit to a more subtle degree - he made a YT video a few years ago ranting about wokeness ruining comedy because he kept having corporate clients asking him not to tell certain jokes. I've stopped watching him

Jeremy Leslie

Must be hard being silenced by people simply choosing not to watch their multi-million dollar netflix program

Pizza Cake Comics

I feel like if "wokeness" stops you from being funny, you weren't very funny to begin with.

Adam Goss

That's what made finding that about him so frustrating - he's VERY funny. He tells great humor about math, physics, statistics - excellent nerdy humor. But there are sadly dicks in every community, including nerds and geeks :( Also he's in his 60s and that may also be a part of it.

Dirk Bergstrom

It was eye-opening to see how many of these jerks played the Riyadh Comedy Festival. That was a disgusting display of greed.

Pizza Cake Comics

Makes sense most of them would go to a place where bigotry is applauded!

Dirk Bergstrom

I certainly wasn't surprised to see Louis C.K. & Dave Chappelle there, but Sam Morril and Jessica Kirson? C'mon, MBK would sooner have you sawed into pieces than shake your hand, and you're gonna perform for him and his cronies? The fuck is wrong with people?

Erika Valentine

The one I couldn't believe (well, kinda) was Pete Davidson. He said (only partially paraphrasing), 'People think I won't perform in SA just because my dad died in 9/11. I'll go anywhere if the check is big enough.'

Erika Valentine

After the backlash over his transphobic 'jokes', Dave Chapelle actually said that he can't be transphobic because he had a trans friend. My man, you *literally* did the 'I'm not racist because I have a Black friend' thing. I don't know what the hell ate his brain during his hiatus, but it makes me sad.

Chris Mingus

They are incapable of creating anything that isn't a thinly veiled attack at people they hate. It's almost sad.

Jacques McBrearty

I call those the schröddinger douche. He'll say it's a joke or not depending of his public reaction

YoPaulie!

*Andrew Dice Clay enters the chat...*

Jon F

Lol, given his hand position in the final square, I thought those *claps* were jerk off noises at first glance.

James

I think the only white comedian who could approach racism in an honest yet humorous fashion was George Carlin. He wasn't racist, but he sure knew how they function: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQHN1ipLPdY Turns out you *can* be edgy if you're not a jack-hole.

Kurdt

I've been watching clips of old comedy shows and it seems like every single one, even the good ones, had some kind of racist or sexist or homophobic bit. (Eddie Murphy was especially bad for homophobic jokes in his 80's stand up). I feel like we should have moved on from this by now and I find it really sad that we haven't and you can get paid stupid amounts of money for this awful hack work.

Gage Franke

They only have one joke now because they know their target audience only wants that one joke

Nicholas Sulikowski

"You can't say anything!" *proceeds to say all the things you "can't say". Gets backlash. Not because there's a law against such shitty things to say, but because the dude was just being a douche. And laws don't protect you from the general public disagreeing with you.* "See?! They came after me because you can't say this shit!" Actually, you can. It's not just all that particularly funny. Once upon a time it made for good shock humor, but no longer.

Tim Starliper

Clap....fap... Meh, close enough.

Christopher Johnson

Is there a snowballs chance in hell I can get you to look at my story titled 'the sheep who cried woke' it's an allegory for the American psyche that was inspired by your political content. Big fan!
