I joined the stream an hour late yesterday, have we decided on a new book/text to read?

ragadrop

No, we didn't. I have a suggestion, if applicable.

I asked the person I had in mind about Shanghai. She seemed kind of confused and gave a weird answer. I realized later, I think when I said "revolutionary art" she thought I meant Ai Wei Wei type of stuff haha. So yeah that was a dead end.

Lisa Fevral

omg your friend probably thought I wanted to come to protest or something AHAH

I looked at a bunch of unis in Italy for curatorial studies masters and they're all like 20-40k a year😭

Simonides

Ahhhh those must be private. I just went to my (public) Alma Mater's fee calculator and for the curatorial masters the first year costs € 3.217,04. And foreign masters students can compete for stipends based on GRE scores. I believe this program is even in English. But I am not like personally trying to get you to come here of course, I'm leaving myself in a little less than a year. Just saying, those high fees sound unusual.

Lisa Fevral

Ohhhh interesting, any recommendations of unis you think are good around there?

Simonides

I just don't know, all I know is that the University of Bologna is good for what I've studied. That's the one whose fees I checked. I did two semesters study abroad here, got one master's degree here right after college, and I'm getting my 2nd master's here now. Beginning year 5 of what was supposed to be a 2-yr program. I'll be 33 before I finally finish being a student, but I'm trying to un-jade myself to write this, because it really is great, I've just taken too long to finish. Bologna as a place is more left-wing compared to the average for Italy, this I know, but I do not know what universities are good in your field of study. I don't think I can be unbiased because this university represents basically my entire early adulthood. I've been this university's employee and student, and for years it was the center of my world, although I stopped feeling that way several months ago. I don't think I can evaluate it in a normal way.

Lisa Fevral

but I can't figure out if international students pay different fees than domestic students, like it is in canada! And if ISEE applies to international students either ahaha (also it says the program is in English, French and Italian, and does that mean you gotta speak all three omg)

Simonides

Sorry though, I see now that the course requires passing a French test in the first year. So I think it does mean you have to know those languages, even though the course is mostly taught in English. But everything I said above about money should be similar at other public universities in Italy. Just look for public, look for fee calculators, look for ISEE equivalent for foreigners, and if you took the GRE in past 5 years look if there is a borsa (purse=scholarship) for foreign masters students. I really don't know if any public universities allow not knowing Italian, but if they do, now you know about the money stuff, and I believe many European countries have similar public uni prices. Those really high prices are typical of Anglosphere. Perhaps somewhere like Czechia may not expect you to know local language to study there.

Lisa Fevral

Ohhh so you speak Italian?? That’s cool! I think I found that the curatorial masters program in Venice doesn’t seem to be asking for Italian, but they do ask for it if you’re going into bachelors it seems! But I’m gonna have to check with them!

Simonides

I speak Italian, yup. I was able to choose English for my "foreign" language requirement, so I didn't have to study another one thankfully. I mean, I want to speak more languages during my life, just not right now.
