Circulation in the Age of AI Models

Let me begin with a passage from Mohammad Salemy's recent contribution to AWC, followed by my reasons for both agreement and hesitation toward his proposition that AI models resemble Benjamin's vision of the Angel of History: I asked an AI system using a Large Language Model to translate a text by Arjangn Sepasi from Farsi into English, then to profile the politics of its author based on framing, vocabulary, and commitments.

Great pick, this seems interesting

I'm sorry I can't read this, I have a personal vow not to read things with AI. For anyone who hasn't seen it, that's not a guess by me, that's what the writer admits to early on in the essay. I'm not judging you, I swear, I get that you're reading it to criticize it. It's just not how I roll so see you next time fairies

I haven’t read the text yet, just the beginning two paragraphs, I’m so confused by this author omfg why do that as someone who’s literally a writer

I am grateful that I've reached a point in my life where I don't expect most people to get it. I still try to speak truth when THEY bring it up though. Like, my climate scientist cousin recently said, he wouldn't use AI for the "smart" part, only the "dumb" part. The only thing I could say that he heard at all was to threaten him with future job loss. If you say AI makes mistakes, it's like they literally glitch and just don't learn that fact even as it's said to them. If you try to explain what dignity is they realize they're being insulted (lol). Explaining that what they call the "dumb part" should be called the "patient part" is useless because they were culturally raised without the concept of patience. I feel like the only IRL awakened people I know are my hairdresser and only one of my friends. Letting go of my expectations of most people has really helped my mental health. So yeah, sorry for that long answer to the question "why do that as [...] a writer" -- the answer, for me, was to stop even asking myself that or expecting better of them. Those people are easily influenced. When people like us will do inspiring things, they will follow us just as passively. Sorry if that sounds bad but I mean it in a hopeful way. We will try to help future children be raised with more patience and respect for hard work.

I wanna dig into this organization now bc it seems like a hypocritical approach to this work imo! like how are you arts of the working class, but you use the biggest fad of our times that's been weaponized against the working class?
