Gawd I love anime 😍 you guys also where a big part of me getting through covid locked down and my old traveling job. Love and thank you

Joshua Laguna

For the amount of times I’ve heard Hotel California, I’ve never actually personally actively put that song on.

Numlocks

My crazy relgious English teacher in high school would get mad at us if we talked about liking Hotel California because he said it was satanic. I don’t know how a hotel can be satanic but that’s cool.

As someone who read the manwha I was glad to see the anime introduce Eternal Sleep/Jinwoo’s mom much earlier. In the original it comes about five or six volumes in and feels like a sweaty attempt to give Jinwoo a motivation besides leveling up. Hopefully the anime keeps feeling free to expand on the source.

Matthew Siegel

My rec for the feedback naming is to swerve into the alternate title, Only I Level Up and go with something like Chain Reactions: Plutalk: Only I Leave a Comment

Geoff Kriz

Matt, your music theory is insane and I love you for it. Thanks for making me smile. I’m on episode 210 of One piece

Dean Smiros

The world is not ready for Nick Wiger meeting Nico Robin. I'm current in One Piece, I started watching during the pandemic and caught up in a bit over a year, which was like an hour of one piece a day. Started reading the manga when I caught up to the anime and, though both are great, I think the manga is way better

Kevin Ela

I feel like I was tricked into watching an isekai

Edwin (edoco18)

Really enjoying Solo levelling, and as someone who read the manhwa I think the show will only get better from here! My pitch for the reaction segment: So-look who’s talking. I’m all caught up on One Piece, but skipped the filler episodes and switched to One Pace, at around episode 600. During the last few years though I’ve primarily read the manga and checked in on the anime for the major moments.

Kevin Ela

The theme song for Nick’s segment “Nick’s Piece” should be a single gunshot

Rory McDaid

Cool to hear about Heather checking out OG dragon ball. I watched DBZ as a teen but original Dragonball wasn’t aired on UK tv 20 odd years ago, so I remember buying the dragon ball manga volumes and was similarly surprised at how different it was. I love how it evolves from a goofy action-gag manga into the beast most know it as in DBZ form. I’ve been revisiting it also since the news of Toriyama’s passing and I still love kid Goku so much. I like that even as the in-universe decades pass and he becomes monstrously powerful that he’s still that oblivious guy. This month’s just released chapter of DB Super, that is presumably Toriyama’s final one, was charming and made me pretty sad, as I imagine it did for many this week!

corndog

i've been caught up on the manga of one piece since 2010. i never miss a new chapter and have re-read large portions of the series multiple times. nick, just wait til you get to Gaimon 😎👍

Michael Pemulis

Solo Leveling, eps 3 & 4, main talking points: 1. I'd like to see a Ghostbusters movie, set in the ghost realm, with ghosts who capture living humans who keep crossing over and meddling in their world. 2. Most of my dreams are me being pursued by people trying to kill me. Or world destruction fantasies. 3. I've not seen an episode of One Piece.

Question for our hosts: at our local rock climbing gym, I recently started lead climbing (where you clip in as you go) with my lovely wife and it felt like a huge level up from top roping (where the rope is fixed at the top of the wall so your partner can catch you more easily). Also all the routes have numerical scores for difficulty so you can perceive your skills increasing over time. When are some times that you felt like you leveled up in your life?

David Mucci

I decided Dragon Ball would be the next long-running manga I would work through after getting current with One Piece. Started to feel more appropriate in this Year of the Dragon and now with Toriyama’s untimely passing. I just finished the original series and started Z on my way to work this morning!

Jeffrey Kunkel

I haven’t had a series hit this hard since you folks got me into chainsaw man. After listening to the first episode i bought the season pass for the series on apple and read the entirety of the webcomic. Now I just sit here being like, “oh man, I can’t wait to see how they feel about [SPOILER]” for stuff that may not ever even be animated.

RyGuy

Hi gang! Love the pods and appreciate all your work! I listen while doing harvest work for marijuana dispensary. I'm current on the One Piece anime and manga. Started watching back in 2007 in the fansub days. Excited to hear more about Nick's One Piece voyage! Also I think the comments section of the podcast could be called Chain Reactions: Leveled Up

Rin Manzano

This podcast is perfect for my job, I work in a cosmetic lab and my job is to create small amounts of shampoos, conditioners, perfumes, and other personal care products and to be able to upscale them into tens to thousands of gallons worth of product to be packaged and shipped out to consumers like Nordstrom or Whole Foods. 😄 In other words, there is a LOT of solitary bench time involved in my work week.

Tim Huff

Hey Gang! Every morning before I start work, I take my dog on a walk at one of local parks near me in Seattle. I listen to both shows often during these walks and it’s a wonderful way to start the day, so Thank you! Loving Solo Leveling. You can tell the author of the Manhwa is a true gamer! There is a scene in Ep 4 where after he defeats the Snake, he is presented with a new weapon, in which he carefully reads and contemplates its composition. At the same time, he is presented with a Venom Potion that has a very wordy description and Jin-Woo just says "Eh, this looks complicated, I'm not gonna read it - ill just grab it in case I need it later." I have never felt so seen as a Gamer!

Rory McDaid

Gundam Seed Freedom hits UK cinemas this weekend and I’m going along Saturday, anyone seen it or going to be seeing it? In anticipation I’ve rewatched Seed and I’m halfway through my Seed Destiny rewatch…. So pretty unlikely that it’ll finish that watch through before the weekend. Gotta say, I’ve enjoyed SD more than I remember liking it back in the day… it’s still frustrating in lots of ways, character motivations are baffling at times…. But I think revisiting it with low expectations has helped me enjoy it more, some decade and a half plus since last watching it!

I was pretty skeptical when you guys announced Solo Leveling as the next show, but I have to admit, my interest in this show is leveling up with each episode. It really takes "what if real life was like a video game" to another level - it's almost kind of like watching a very dramatic Let's Play of an RPG. I'm curious to see how this world continues to develop and what Jinwoo is going to do with the ability to minmax his own life.

Will K.

It's interesting that Hollywood submitted Mission Impossible for the Japanese Oscars, I guess they were hesitant about Oppenheimer? 👀

Will K.

Also reaction segment idea: Solo LevelUptalk

Dean Lowdon Clear

Wasn’t sure about this show after the first episode, but now I’m hooked! Also, Matt’s take on ‘old music’ is crazy. There is loads of great music from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s, and that includes Bob Marley!

Andrew Mcilwraith

Loved Heather's shout out of the One Punch Man manga the previous episode! I'm too stupid to realize how but the action panels that Yusuke Murata (OPM manga artist) draws are super easy to follow

David Mucci

Just now getting to the end and I’m ready to turn in my homework! 1. I work in the immigration field, asylum in particular, so it’s nice to distract myself from hearing about the worst things people do to each other. 2. Community Leveling 3. As for One Piece, I am caught up with the manga. As for the anime, I skip around pretty freely while watching what I’ve already read; in sequence, I’m around episode 450, but haven’t quite seen 450 episodes (but maybe a few hundred at least) over the course of about the past year? Hopefully that gives Nick some idea. Thanks!

Randell Flag

I really checked out of the anime after his super fascist speech.

Andrew Mcilwraith

Can't wait to here more about Wiger's Piece!! My One Piece journey started early last year and I absolutely love the show. I'm currently at about episode 560. Like Mr Mucci was saying I'd recommend taking your time with it and watch some other shows/anime in between One Piece sessions.

Bobson Dugnutt

Really loving Solo Leveling so far, so glad you guys talked about it as I probably wouldn't have watched it on my own. Reminds me a little of Inuyashiki in the way Jinwoo is learning his own powers without a manual. For the comments section, how about 'Solo Revisiting', 'Solo Blathering', 'Solo Reveling', 'So-lowdown', or in respect to the original title of the show, 'Only We Listen Up'? PS - I have never seen any of One Piece.

clearplastichuman

How far i am in One Piece: zero (when i was in highschool the dudes who bullied me always talked about One Piece so therefore i spit on One Piece). Chain Reactions entry: Solo "Level With Me"

Coy_o_Coy

When Matt said “Sick Wiger” I heard that and I want him to know I liked it

Adam Curtis

The alternative translation of the title is "Only I Level Up" so it should be Chain Reactions: Only I Blue Talk.

XRedGambit

I have an idea for anytime you go to Rochelle, in both shows, call the segment "A side of Ranch" for her thoughts if she experienced the thing as well. I'm particular to solo leveling: TBD, but I was saying solo-liloquy when Heather called me out on the pod. My danger adjacent job is I do IT work and sit down all day. It's dangerous because I have heart disease and had a heart attack at 36.

Handsome Bane

CAME HERE TO TALK ABOUT LAST WEEK'S HEATHER'S HOLE! I CANT AFFORD TO UNLOCK THE GET PLAYEDS ON PATREON RIGHT NOW SO PLEASE FORGIVE ME FOR THE HARD PIVOT!!! That segment touched my soul and made me want to rebel audibly cheer in my car. I want to be in the room to see Heather open any sealed, expensive game from the ...hoOoOole... Twitch would be amazing. But a live show?? Anyway, my question is, if you could open any game for the first time for the sheer rush of endorphins, what would you pick? Bring me Chrono Trigger on my deathbed. That suits me right down to the ground. Infinite uncomfortable praise, Handsome Bane

Chris

For One Piece I’m 320 episodes in and so far it’s an all timer. Every ten episodes I’m crying my eyes out loving every second of it, such a delight. That dude can fucking stretch

Tim Huff

My Pitch: Solo Babbling

Niall

Soliloquy Leveling. Also, I'm up to date on One Piece Anime and Manga. Welcome to the fleet, Wiger!

Ethan Banman

I started the One Piece manga at the beginning of January, thinking that I could read 100 chapters a month and catch up by thr end of the year. Well, it's March 21st and I have 40 chapters left. No regrets. I have more intentions to watch the anime, bur I've watched yhe Netflix show, which might be the second live-action anime adaptation to get the vibe right. You should call the segment Trio Conversing.

BensDecoy

Really enjoying Solo Leveling so far to the point where it’s hard to just watch two eps to follow along with the pod. That said, I’m kind of hoping this show doesn’t go where I think it’s going with the protag becoming evil and being embroiled in a Death Game mixed with an Isekai. I don’t usually try to “get ahead” of a plot but the flags are there. Also feel they’ve already missed an opportunity with the stat system. He focused solely on strength but he was still incredibly agile during the fight and tanked a lot of damage despite ignoring Vitality and saying he’d be done for if the snake got one good hit in. The show might have kept him humble a bit longer if he was ultra muscley but biffed attacks without some agility to back it up.

J0hn

Starting watching One Piece at the beginning of the year, currently on episode 139. All I will say is that Karoo got that dog in him.

David Morningstar

I watched One Piece in the worst way. I had a coworker who was a huge fan, so I decided to catch up so we could talk about it at work. At some point I started to get impatient and was literally watching every episode at 4x speed, consuming 10-20 episodes a day. I watched 1080 episodes in less than a year, but I don't know if I retained any of it. Don't be like me.

Scotty Beverages

Im afraid I have developed an addiction to One Piece. I’ve currently watched about 400 episodes in just over a month. Even while watching other shows I find myself thinking, “I can’t wait for this to be over so I can watch more One Piece. I did cheat by starting with the live action series and then reading the manga up to Alabasta. I’ve also gone back fourth between dubs and subs and wanna say I think the currently available Funimation Dub is actually really good and become my preferred way of watching.

The Mountain That Abides

If an app tells me I have to do 100 push ups every day, without exception, then I'm letting the giant bug eat me.

Cody B

Thanks for covering this show. I fell off watching anything anime a few years ago, and the podcast and the show have really reignited my appreciation for it.

Tmacc

I've always wanted to do this, and it might be crazy...but Wiger's Piece has inspired me. I'm making the official announcement here: I've started reading the One Piece manga, and I'm going to attempt to read 1 Chapter a day! See you on the other side in 4 years, Nickbro. Also One Piece related, the Netflix live action adaptation (which I watched all of) was SURPRISINGLY great. Even my best pal who has seen the entire show and read the entire manga (and keeps up weekly) liked the live action a lot. I also heard they might be readapting/remaking the anime some time soon? That's part of the reason I chose to read the manga for now, instead. In other news, I recently did 100 push ups a day for a year, and have started again as of this past month after a break...the more you do it the easier it gets! Since you guys were discussing how to break them up, I will tell you I break them up into sets of 15ish, with about 35 total completed each time I do them, and I vary the sets between normal, diamond, and wide (so ~35 of each daily). Much like I am setting sail into One Piece with him, I challenge Wiger, here and now, to voyage into 100 push ups a day with me for at least the next month, and report back weekly with his findings.

I don't trap and skin animals, but I do feed and train them. I'm a carnivore caretaker at a zoo and work with 20+ species of felines, canines, bears and other assorted small mammals. Most times I'm listening to y'all I'm scooping up tiger shit or feeding something that would love to skin me!
