I feel like Jinwoo is slowly becoming a men’s rights advocate

Cal

Really curious and excited to see if ‘the menu’ actually has its own agenda or end goal. And if Jinwoo, who’s hooked on levelling, is just blindly doing the doing dirty work of some faceless entity. Loving the show so far, glad you folks are too! 🫡

Sexy Grandma's Retirement Home

As established in previous episodes, because Ash is from the anime world and there our live action media is their anime. So when Ash said he was watching the news he was actually answering the question properly.

I still think the segment should be called Chain Reactions: Level With Us. This show (the anime and the podcast) rocks! Heather and Matt and Ranch are cool.

MK

I'm so glad Ranch has joined us on the Solo Leveling ride. I actually had the opposite reaction to hers, where I had gotten so used to leveled up Jinwoo from the manwha, that I was shocked at how frail our boy was in the first few episodes. Great pod as always, see y'all next week.

KidKimura

So excited about Heather watching Dragon Ball for the first time and hope she keeps going into Dragon Ball Z. Calling it now, she's going to want to buy Trunks' jacket.

McStamper

I got this far into the series, then binged the entire manwha. In a week.

Rachael

It took me until episode 6 to really be in on this show. I almost gave up on it last week. I shouldn't have to put 3 hours into an anime to see if I like it. Anyways, I'm on board now but very scared of where our boy Jinwoo is going emotionally. Do you think he'll get a new ability for emotional intelligence to level up?

Doc Robot

Looks like Solo Leveling will also feature a guy seeking revenge on the protagonist for killing his brother who was a real piece of shit. Is this a new anime trope?

Dabinsk

Hearing Nick talk about 4kidz on wiger’s piece reminded me of all the other weird 4kidz localizations, such as Brock calling onigiri jelly donuts in the original pokemon series. If you all ever get a chance, it’s worth looking into, they made a lot of baffling decisions that are funny to read about.

The moment in this episode where Heather was suspicious of the older S-rank hunter giving some basic advice to a subordinate clicked for me that this specific concept is not only not out of place for anime but is almost cliche. Anime characters tell each other things like “it’s important to get a good nights sleep!” and other mundane life lessons all of the time. I don’t know if it’s just a cultural difference or if it’s because the perception of an audience is younger so they sneak in these moments to teach them or what.

I first started watching Dragon Ball in the late 80s (back in Hong Kong in Cantonese) and it definitely felt more like a goofy adventure comedy before it turned into an all-beefcake fist fest. It was also huge in HK because Goku is directly based off the main character from Journey to the West and, for whatever reason, shows featuring young horny anime characters seemed to be popular there (see crayon shin-chan and ranma 1/2)

Question for the party: now that we know that Heather has common armor, we gotta know, what loot would ya’ll drop?

Just wanted to mention regarding the One Punch Man conversation, and the juxtaposition of art style: OPM was originally (and is still ongoing as) a web-comic by ONE, later to be illustrated for the standard manga by Yusuke Murata. The crude drawings are Murata utilizing how ONE draws the same characters for comedic affect, which I think is such a nice touch

Different anime but it's mentioned before but Frieren season 1 just ended last week. I love it so much and am gonna miss it every Friday. Might be anime of the year for me. One of those that feels like art can change lives. Jinwoo's going down a dark path and seems like he can use a little Frieren. For the segment, what about Fan Solo?

Bobson Dugnutt

Not only did Matt and Nick not make any jokes about Dong Suk, they haven't chuckled at all whenever 'Dragon Balls' has been said. Also, just listened to Matt say they need a new bible literally the day after Trump started selling his own. Coincidence? Loving Solo Leveling so far, trying not to watch ahead, thank you all on the podcast as I don't know if I'd have watched it otherwise. For the comments section, may I suggest 'Solo Revisiting', 'Solo Blathering', 'Solo Reveling', 'So-lowdown', or in respect to the original title of the show, 'Only We Listen Up'?

I also went to End of Evangelion on St Pats day here in Chicago! Had a hot audience, loved the enthusiastic clapping immediately after Asuka says “Disgusting”

I used to listen to the podcast when I worked as a sound editor for cartoons. I would wear a headphone on one ear with the podcast playing, and then listen with my other ear to the studio monitors where I was cutting sound effects and cleaning up dialog. Sometimes, when another editor was sharing the room with me. I would wear two pairs of headphones in a cross formation, so that I could listen to both pairs with one ear each. You might think this made me bad at my job, but I was nominated for a daytime Emmy two years in a row for ‘Outstanding Sound Editing’. It’s true that I didn’t win, but I never missed an episode - no regrets.

Sorry, I don't know much about Pokémon, but, is there an Anger Management Pikachu? If so, Ash might want to try catching one.

Also just gotta say, I definitely remember the first little bit of the one piece rap, it is so catchy

Jayme Cangelosi

I also went to see End of Evangelion (in NYC) and it was so fun to see in a packed theater. The couple next to me were clearly seeing it for the first time and I lost track of how many times they gasped throughout the course of the film

Robot House

I do overnight deli work so no customers qnd mostly unloading freight. I burn through way to many podcasts but the highlights of my week are the get played crew and some obscure fast food podcast. Do bois or something like that

For heather: the reason they cut to the s-ranks is to give context for Jinwoo’s power, he is maybe a c or close to B rank in this, but he can’t do nearly as much physically/attack power wise as the S ranks, but I feel like it also establishes the idea that he is progressing more like the creatures rather than the humans rankings, and we know that the creatures can even surpass the S ranks based on the opening scene of the series

I edit schematics for aircrafts and my work is mostly from home, so I love the pod to keep me company while I make sure a typo doesn’t cause a fighter jet to fall out of the sky.

S

the labor I do while listening is cleaning the restaurant after serving in an Irish pub! when Matt mentioned his st Patrick's day, I won't lie... it gave me ptsd flashbacks

David Mucci

I think episode 6 is where this anime really clicked with me. There is an almost TLOU2-feeling I got in being complicit with the main character doing bad things, because it gave me too much pleasure to see him killing those dudes, and made me reflect on why I felt that way. PS I’d love for Wiger’s Piece to capture Nick’s reactions to the One Piece theme songs as he gets to them! They’re a lot of fun. Bon voyage!

eat the electric rat ash you can do it

after being brought to the brink of death and bequeathed ungodly power, I gotta say -being granted the superpower of 'having menus' sucks ass the show fuckin rips though

Tom N

Loving the show, though the most surprising thing is hearing your guy's excited reactions to all the video gamey elements. IRL game menus, inventory, stats affecting your real body, things like that. These are now pretty standard tropes in the LitRPG genre, which solo leveling definitely fits into. I guess I've been desensitized to it after reading so many stories with these ideas, but it's cool to hear how people with fresh eyes see it. Are there any genres/types of media that you are so familiar with that you kinda lost track of what made them fun in the first place?

ryan mcgrath

Solo leveling reminds me of One Punch Man, except they aren’t in on the joke.

Tmacc

Holy shit, the song that played when he was killing the 6 people that betrayed him was amazing. I love the juxtaposition of the sweet, beautiful, slower song with the brutality of everything going on, and his acceptance of what he was doing. Also repitching my toss out for the segment name: Total Reveling.

CTSteeze

Been a listener the whole time, never watched a show until this one. 20 min episodes are delightful, thanks get anime’d crew

Spare-Time Tuxedo Patrick Goes Looking for Love

I have something to say that might be controversial. I think the opening theme song for Solo Leveling is borderline bad. It’s worse than the 4Kids One Piece Pirate Rap, which is actually good. That said, amongst the anime you’ve watched, the worst opening song was Pluto and the best was FLCL. Is that a fair assessment?
