I got Matt’s radio joke

516 pieces 🦾🥶👻💖🕺🐥🪲🌩👊

Jaw on the floor from that episode you watched. It almost worked as a short film on its own

Sexy Grandma's Retirement Home

Given Heather's love of camping, Japanese camping gear, and anime, I recommend she check out Laid-Back Camp. It's a slice of life anime about a bunch of high school girls that go camping as a hobby. As far as I can tell, the gear and campsites are all accurate to real life. It's slower paced and there's certainly less gore and action, but it hits so perfectly on what she was talking about at the start of the episode I just had to mention it.

Sexy Grandma's Retirement Home

I think it would be absolutely hilarious if one of the random episodes that gets selected is a recap episode. It would be the only time in the history of anime that someone would like one of those.

Matt’s shock jock joke at the top of the episode absolutely took me out 🫡 the man’s a genius, let him speak!!

For anyone struggling to find the show, its Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju, S2E9: Untitled (on the cronchyroll)

First time watching the aniMayhem anime this week. Its going to be hilarious if the random anime picked next week takes us away from short-film treatise on an old man contemplating his art and death, to some hyper fanservice anime episode of something called "I got reincarnated as a pair of women's underpants." This is going to be a wild month.

I found it really difficult to read the subtitles whilst also listening to the hosts commentary. Think a dubbed episode of a show might be easier to follow along.

Matt was on fire this episode. I can tell we listen to the same stuff because he knows Phil Hendrie from Never Not Funny and the sexy radio lady is an old Maron bit.

So excited for Rakugo being brought up. Weekly Shonen Jump has a Rakugo manga called Akane-Banashi thats really popular (as of last release its average rank is 5th just after My Hero Academia). It's a comedy drama about a girl(Akane) whose father was training in Rakugo but gets denied his graduation due to politics between the different schools and she grows up wanting to prove her father's style of story telling deserved recognition and to confront the Master that denied his graduation. It's a very good read and ongoing with 108 chapters released so far on the Shonen Jump app.

It's amazing to me that somehow they ended up on not only on a very well regarded anime - but a practically self-contained episode that is crazy compelling, even in the vacuum that is ani-MAY-hem. I'm absolutely checking the series out from the beginning, and low-key hoping they land on something far more confusing and bizarro next week. This format is already a rousing success.

Let Matt cook! Matt needs a shock-jock radio show. #SexyMatt

Imagine inviting your friends to watch a 3 hour film that you consider to be one of the greatest achievements of the art form. Now, imagine your friends arriving 2 hours late, googling the movie’s plot to catch up on what they missed, comparing the protagonist of your favorite movie to Dane Cook, and leaving at the climax of act 2 in a 3-act movie. As a HUGE Showa Genroku Rakguo Shinju fan, listening to this episode was TORTURE. Ani-MAYhem, indeed! I’m thrilled that y’all got a chance to check this show out! For what it’s worth, it’s directed by Shinichi Omata, the same man who directed the mega-popular (and just as great) Kaguya-sama: Love is War. Rakugo Shinju is considered by many to be his magnum opus, and you can really feel his presence when you compare the show against the manga. A fun fact: season 1 of the show happened to air while the mangaka was finishing up her series. And watching the anime adaptation of her own manga changed her perspective on one of the show’s central characters, which ultimately affected how she chose to wrap things up. Shockingly, there’s not much that was spoiled in the episode y’all covered. It’s totally worth giving a try if you’re in the mood for a slower-paced, slice-of-life-y anime!

Let’s hope the rng gods deliver the period episode of “reincarnated as a vending machine”

This first episode of AniMAYhem went so well, I can’t wait until we experience the opposite end of the spectrum. Also, like Heather, I’ve somehow ended up as being the person in my friend group who “loves a mech.” I finally made myself watch gundam iron blooded orphans and was floored when the show actually showed its teeth and started killing off those teenagers. PS the last fight of Naruto Shippuden is a mech battle

Extra butter theater popcorn with melted peanut butter. Messy as all get out but delicious 😋

Arthur VanRooy

oh my god it's been over a week and I'm just now getting the month pun thanks to it being written out/capitalized. That rules so much lol.

Brave Baboon

What the fuck did we just watch ... why did it fucking rock me to me core?

Zack Tennenhouse

There is a case in the fifth or sixth Phoenix Wright game that is centered on a rakugo performance, which is the only reason I have any idea what that is. That episode was wildly compelling and I may well watch more of this show.

XRedGambit

You all saying blue talk is my favorite part of the podcast because I get to say it too and pretend it's not weird I'm saying it out loud while shopping for groceries. Also when Matt completely derailed Heather once she processed the words was fantastic. I think the point in the end was Naruto is chumbawumba and Luffy is Tom Petty.

Onsens are great! As someone who is for sure shy about their body, it is quite the liberating experience, even as a foreigner. My girlfriend and I had to separate, as is custom, but we both came out feeling refreshed and impressed, especially after a long day in Kyoto. Highly recommend next time any of you go to Japan! Also as another commenter said, tattoos ARE allowed in certain onsen. I'm tattooed myself and i saw many Japanese men tattooed in the onsen as well. Lastly, great format! Great idea and I hope the next is just as good and bizarre.

At my job we have a professional movie theater grade popcorn machine. We make popcorn on special occasions like the last day of school. Anyway, the reason why movie theater popcorn is addicting and tasty is because of one thing, Flavacol. Flavacol is a butter seasoning that makes popcorn that "movie theater popcorn" flavor.

Ripley

it's a one in a million chance but I'm hoping against all hope that they have to watch an episode of Future Diary at some point lmao

Rachael

I watched the episode along with the podcast and it was incredible. I'm definitely going to check this whole series out. Let AniMAYhem continue!!!

Tmacc

Guys I'm gonna tell you my favorite way to eat popcorn....ranch powder. It fucking rules; if you like ranch give it a shot.

Crid

Naruto cut is called the Ocean Cut. I think a guy made it for his partner to watch but that could be me spouting bullshit. I think Heather would appreciate the revolutionary themes of one piece as well as the question of the void century, but acknowledge they take a bit to get to. Also the aniMAYhem got me to watch the whole series. 10/10

As a fan of multiple Gundam series and mech anime in general (please watch Gurren Lagann for the podcast!!), and someone whose first favorite weekly manga was Naruto... I also believe One Piece is one of the greatest stories ever told. I like Naruto a lot, but the One Piece manga is a sprawling 20+ year narrative that is so intricately and thoughtfully constructed that it's difficult to consider it anything but the achievement of a master. The anime, however, is just an OK adaptation that has always suffered from Toei's production schedule. S tier manga, B tier anime. Also, fyi--One Piece has mechs. Anyway, animayhem is such a great idea. I can't bring myself to watch a show that way but somehow listening is different, so I will keep doing that.

Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu is one of my favorite anime series, ever - I think it's a masterpiece. Can't even remember how I found it, but it's some of the closest a TV show has felt to me like reading a novel, if that makes any sense. I'd recommend everyone check it out! It also got me really interested in rakugo - I've since gone to see it live in Japan multiple times. There's also a manga series current to Shounen Jump that's also about rakugo called Akane-Banashi, and that's phenomenal as well.

Murphy

If you’re interested in an example of the soundbite radio intros Matt mentioned, listen to the trans-led comedy podcast Nymphowars, also known as “KFNW, trucker radio for the flyover states.”

Andrew Mcilwraith

Have wanted to check Rakugo Shinjuku out for a while now, thanks for the excuse!! I'll be watching more of it. Ani-MAY-hem rocks!!

Jayme Cangelosi

This was really fun. Listening to the podcast synced up while watching the episode is great, getting to hear you lot reactions to what’s happening in the show as it happens. And what a great first random pick! Can’t wait for next week.

Mr. Lucy

Hey guys?…I kinda hate this.

grodon909

It'd be hilarious if they pulled a terrible anime, like X-arm

Handsome Bane

So who is gonna be the official host of the new segment, WHAT ARE YA EATIN? because I don't HATE it at all. But if we're gonna do this every week, let's do it right.

SoupyCJ

Commenting on April 23rd 2025 and i really hope you guys do this again this year. Holy shit that was an intriguing episode of anime.
