Anyone know where I can watch this in Canada? We don't have Hulu up here and I can't find it streaming on any other platforms

Rory McDaid

Excited to listen! I’ve thankfully seen this series before, as can’t easily watch along here in the UK unfortunately - no Hulu here.

Edwin (edoco18)

Excited for this show! Just wondering if you’re planning on seeing the Blue Lock movie coming out soon? Also if you’re still able to I highly recommend the Haikyu movie that came just came out. A great sports movie 🏐

Geoff Kriz

…just wondering if Heather knows about the Eva reference in the newest chapter of CSM. 😶

On the topic of AC in Mobile Suits. My dad was a tank commander in desert storm and those tanks didn't have AC. Even in modern guerilla warfare one of the better tactics against a tank is throwing a molotov at the air intakes to overheat the inside so the people in there have to get out.

Console Canon

Nude scenes on Toonami usually had digital bikinis drawn in, if they weren't cut entirely.

Notrock

Not unlike Wiger, when Karen started bossing Shiro around my girlfriend said "Ah, so this is where your taste in women comes from."

Buddy Jones

I think y’all should replace the word “chunky” with “Zaku” cause those were the thickest mecha boys I’ve ever seen. Really looking forward to watching this series.

Emma Harger-Young

Spacenoids and Earthnoids lol... and somehow that's kinda better than Spacians and Earthians that were used in Witch from Mercury. (I think they should've said Astrans and Terrans because that just sounds less clunky, but that's just me!!) And speaking of names, another interesting thing about this vs the other two Gundams I've seen (Witch from Mercury and Wing way back in the day lol) is that a lot of the names felt very normal to me! Shiro Amada, Karen Joseph, Sanders (first name as yet unknown to me)... maybe that is just reflective of the era 08th is set in vs the other two?

BensDecoy

Now that we’ve started the series I’m shooting my shot again; opa Gundam style.

Rory McDaid

I’m so pleased the whole crew enjoyed this. As a longtime Gundam fan of 20-something years, it’s been a real joy hearing Heather’s love for the franchise grow throughout the podcasts run. and now hearing her get to share that excitement with our favourite lads? - a true pleasure. Thanks gang!

FMA was the first anime I really got into. Unfortunately it is completely unavailable to watch anywhere.

Love 08th MS Team. One of the first anime I ever watched and inspired me to draw a comic about my own MS Team. The mobile suit designs and vibe of the show were carried over to the PS2 strategy game “Zeonic Front” which I consider a sort of spiritual sequel.

Michael Pemulis

Coincidentally, a week before 08th MS Team was announced, as the next show covered, I watched Gundam I, on Netflix, which, somebody can correct me if I'm wrong, is Gundam 0079, in film format? Really enjoying 08th MS Team. I love the hand drawn art and the badass saxophone. Seems to be pulling from late 80s/early 90s US action movies, and it's great. Nick thought of Predator; I thought of Aliens, with the parallel vibes of the 08th MS team and the squad Ripley goes back with.

LagerB

Absolutely had a blast with this episode! Great lines, great background facts with Heather. So glad y’all are doing Gundam and enjoying it! An ep as good as the show you’re reviewing.

Deacon Raid

Surprised that Nick didn’t mention there is a brief shot of monkeys/apes in the jungle in episode 2!

Is it possible that the gundams don’t have ac because they were made and designed in space? Can’t imagine the need for ac in the cold vacuum of space? Idk

XRedGambit

This is my second venture into Gundam. I really liked these 2 episodes and want to check out the original remake thing. I will say Gundam wing is the best Gundam show made (that I've seen). And I do agree with Heather on fma, and it's because it's the first one I watched. Plus it's one of the first series I watched where I was caught up with the Japanese release and seeing it week to week.

My first and only experience with Gundam was with Mobile Fighter G Gundam as a kid ("This hand of mine is burning red!", I also built the model kit) so I went into 8th MS Team mostly blind. I absolutely devoured the entire series in like two days. What a great show that I can't believe I missed on Toonami.

Joseph Patrick O'Connell

For some reason this anime has me pumped, and its a lot more fun than original Gundam, which had the most depressing end theme lyrics of all time.

Joseph Patrick O'Connell

I thought use of the term "zeeks" was being used as a racial slur the way the term "g**ks" was used in the Korean War as an anti-asian slur, am I alone in this? I just assumed this is the kind of dehumanizing racism against an enemy that occurs in war time.

Episodes like this are why I love this podcast! I've been wanting to try a gundam series (since Heather talks about them so often) but never knew where to start. Listening to Heather give such a wonderful history lesson was a real treat, and made me appreciate the episodes even more. Looking forward to the rest of the series!

Rachael

So, we have the Disney/Hulu package and this anime isn't available on it. Guess I'm doubling up on Hulu in my household for the time being. 🥲

Zack Tennenhouse

As much as I loved the week-to-week chaos of animation, I'm glad to be back in a single series deep dive. I've never been a Gundam guy - my only prior experience with the franchise was popping in and out of random episodes of Gundam Wing on Toonami as a kid and snapping together some cheap model kits - so I REALLY needed the context Heather brought to the table here and I think I'm going to be much more well equipped to fully enjoy the rest of this series because of it.

I’m with Wiger on that cut away to slow jazz seeming like they’re gonna cut back to a low key hentai scene. And just when it seems safe… bing bang boom water fall bewbs. Anime’s ability to seem innocent enough only to jump straight to blatant adult content never ceases to amaze me. Looking at you Delicious In Dungeon

BensDecoy

A serious comment: I like the detail that the lady’s watch is set to remind her to remind her brother that he needs to take medication. I think twice in the second episode it beeps and Shiro doesn’t know why. It’s connected to something beyond him but it’s also a reminder that maybe the two of them are still connected across space.

parenthesesONE

Heather I was also curious how the gundam are controlled in the anime and it reminded me of Gary whittas book Gundog, where they are controlled by 2 ppl, 1 in the torso and 1 in the legs. So the pilots have to work well with each other or it doesn't work. I'm not sure the technical difference between gundam and mech suits but I really liked the book and I think you might too.

Eric Krohn

I agree with Heather, 08th MS Team and War in the Pocket were great entry points into the Gundam universe. They are also about the only Gundam shows I've finished, since it's hard for me to watch a 40-50 episode season anymore. The original Mobile Suit Gundam was turned into a trilogy of movies, which also made that easier to digest.

GlizzyMcGuire

I gotta say I think most people who have read the Demon Slayer manga don't have a problem with the added content. I won't even call it filler because filler would be if Tanjiro went off to a town that was never referenced again to save the day. People who have watched Naruto know terrible filler and this is not it. Reading the manga it's a pretty quick jump from this training arc to the final arc of the series. Where having a closer relationship to some of the lower level Demon slayers will make the ending much more emotional.

Jamie Hill

I’m so pumped we are watching MS 08th Team. Is was the one that I watched to get into Gundam as well. This show gives me big M.A.S.H. Vibes, especially with the litter nerd guy keeping a journal and it being v.o. Hawkeye had a similar thing in the later seasons of M.A.S.H. Can’t wait to watch the rest for the 3rd/4th time with the crew.

Bobson Dugnutt

I was a big Transformers fan as a kid and this first foray into Gundam for me is bringing back memories of watching the Transformers tv show too, so I’m loving it so far. Suggestions for the comment section next week: Mobile Suit Rundown or Gundam Rundown

Sewing Savage

Theres a subset of gundam cosplayers that will go snowboarding in full gundam foam armor, just shredding powder holding space cannons or sheilds. I couldnt tell you why.

MosDeef

Haven't had a chance to watch the anime so only listened to the beginning of the episode. The guy who plays People Eater is super well known in Australia (that's where I'm from, I just live in Ikebukuro). Mostly for playing lovable/wholesome dads on TV. Imagine Patrick Duffy or Ed O'Neil tweaking their own nipples in the desert, that's how it reads to us.

The Sides are located at real locations known as Lagrange Points - mathematical solutions to the three body problem of gravitational equilibrium points between the Sun, Earth, and the Moon. When looking at stable gravity locations between the Earth and the Moon however, the sun is sooooo far away that its effect is effectively a constant. The solution gives 5 positions of equilibrium where something can rest without using fuel to remain where it is. The L2 Langrage point specifically is located directly behind the Moon, opposite the Earth, and is where the Zeon Side 3 colonies are located. This is a really cool detail because of course the colonies that can literally never see the Earth would be where the faction rebelling against Earth based leadership originates.

Wow, this is one of those anime where I saw like one episode as a kid on TV, but never learned what it was called and could never find it again. That whole sequence of Shiro and Aina figuring out how to survive in the wrecked ship has been burned into my memory since it aired on Toonami probably 20ish years ago. It was a total shock seeing it again for these episodes. Thanks for finally answering that long standing question for me, looking forward to seeing more.

Clitrocket

Love the ep guys 🙂 my first introduction to gundam was actually gunpla and I was wondering what gunpla Heather would get for Matt and Nick based off their personalities?
