i regret to inform you that people are, in fact, on some mosquito freak shit. this is an interview with Hirohiko Araki, the author of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: - First, what is your fetish? My fetish!? Hmm, Well... In Part 7, I drew a scene where Johnny confesses to Gyro that he has an insect bite fetish, but that was actually about myself. Your skin swells red when a mosquito bites you, right? I like to push in my nails to make an X mark on the spot. When I was small and my older female cousin would get bitten by a mosquito, I would ask her to let me do it. It's quite erotic too (laughs). https://jojowiki.com/Interview:UOMO_Magazine_(August_2018)

Reading Uzumaki fucked me up for life. I first tried to read it a few years ago while I was recovering from a medical procedure. I have an inner ear disorder called Ménière's Disease which involves pretty intense vertigo attacks, alongside plenty of other fun symptoms. At the time I was recovering from a treatment that intentionally destroys part of the inner ear of the effected side, to eventually help relieve the vertigo. In the short term though I was suffering from the worst dizziness of my life, literally bed bound and unable to move my head without experiencing severe vertigo. Perfect opportunity to catch up on some reading! When I got to the bit about Shuichi's mother stabbing herself in the ears and being stuck in a constant state of vertigo, it fucked me up so bad that I started having a severe vertigo attack. I slammed the book shut and threw it across the room, and didn't work up the nerve to finish it for another 6 months. This was the single worst possible book I could have read at that point, I felt scarred by the experience. Thankfully I don't get vertigo attacks as often or as intense these days, but it's something that can still happen at any time and with very little warning. Much like the town of Kurôzu-Cho, I'll forever be haunted by spirals.

Dynamite In The Brain

Instead of Uzumaki, I'd recommend these horror anime: Dark Gathering - based on a manga by Kenichi Kondo, each arc manages to come up with some sort of horrifying concept my brain would have never reached on its own. Animation by OLM definitely makes the lazy "pokemon but with bloodthirsty ghosts" description more apt, as stone cold ghost busting moppet Yayoi gathers Japan's most dangerous ghosts in order to to kill a god. Mononoke - original anime spun off from the Bakeneko story in the Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales anthology series. More occult mystery than outright horror, each arc has some sort of supernatural problem that is solved by the arrival of the mysterious immortal Medicine Seller. Currently being revived in a trilogy of movies, the first of which will be on Netflix soon. The Vampire Dies In No Time - Goofy sitcom about a vampire and a vampire hunter living together based on Itaru Bonnoki's manga. The third main character is a cute pink fairy armadillo called John, a gag based on the incongruous appearance of an armadillo in Transylvania in Dracula (1931).

Horror is my favorite genre, and I’ve encountered countless examples of horror elements still working for me despite poor production elements, particularly in film. B-movies still have some great scares, for example. So in the first half of episode 3, I was ready to say that the horror was working for me despite the sloppy animation, and almost had an endearing quality in spite of itself — something I’m not unfamiliar with from the B-horror movies I’ve mentioned. That was pretty much squandered by the second half of the episode and its breakneck pacing to the point of incoherence. I appreciated that the last episode was a lot more straightforward, but even that is still rushed, as the journey the characters go on feels epic in the last few chapters of the book and the 23 minutes don’t give them room to breathe. However, didn’t fully hate this thing; I liked parts of all episodes and would even go so far as to say I liked 1 and 4. It maybe lands at a 6/10 for me (so not as bad as Captain Lazerhawk).

I'm with Matt, on the Todd Phillips front. Down with Phillips, up with Field. Let's get a Tár vs Joker movie and see Lydia whale on that dumbass clown with her baton.

Kyle Caulfield

Matt, my brother in Arceus, spirals are indeed shapes

LagerB

Jesus Christ the show sounded nasty, but putting in a Get Plate for it was even nastier

Re: the live action movie: it's enjoyable in that C-Movie slop kind of way. It adopts a weird, almost silly tone in parts, I guess as a way to signify descent to madness? Idk, watch the trailer, then google "uzumaki movie bathroom scene", then let me know when you're gonna watch it because the full movie is available on YouTube.

Rachael

The pacing of this series was so fast, it honestly felt like I was in a fever dream. I just went with it instead of trying to figure out who was who and what was connected and what wasn't. Matt, please please please tell me you aren't teasing about Get Animed watching Gurren Lagann. Literally my all time favorite show! 🥰

Zeon Liberation

The mosquito “straw” is a proboscis. I haven’t watched this or Terminator zero. And I never will. Also Matt should read Frieren. I started reading it and it’s unexpectedly cozy and sweet.

Lark

I totally understand the disappointment in the animation, but I find Blue Lock season 2 to be a reasonably enjoyable visual novel. Also, The Apothecary Diaries Season 2 comes out in January. It's the perfect time to catch up!

Will Hoff

Regardless of Uzumaki's animation woes, the show as written was flawed already because the pacing was all wrong. Nothing felt scary because it constantly moved on from one thing to the next at such a clip. The original trailer made me excited for eerie vibes that the show barely had because there was no room to breathe. Disappointed!

Alex L

I really hope they consider watching Gurren Lagann. Watching that week-to-week when it aired was one of the most satisfying viewing experiences I've ever had. Also are we going to get another Wiger's Piece update? I would love to hear Nick talk more in detail about what he likes about it, but we haven't heard anything in months so I'm worried he dropped it. :(

Deacon Raid

I produce an entomology podcast (Bugs Need Heroes) and one of the hosts loves mosquitoes! Her doctorate focuses on them and climate change. It’s expected that warmer climates will mean more mosquitoes. But she’s been bitten by them so much that she’s developed an allergy. Entomologists also sometimes get allergies to the small scales on butterfly wing

Fish

Matt, you should definitely read cat gamer! it's so cute! there's a bunch of different game references from the games that the main character plays. basically, she's a salary woman that doesn't stay late at work cause she likes to play games then she finds a stray cat and adopts it. i think you would really enjoy it

XRedGambit

I think this anime hit on the points it was trying to make. It was scary that it was released and not other things. It is unnerving on how bad the animation was. And it had Uzumakis galore as it spiraled down the toilet.

Blair Kuehn-Smith

I give Uzumaki 5 out of 5 spirals, but the spirals are water going down the toilet. This show stinks!

David Mucci

The more I think about it, the first episode seems like a great proof of concept for what they could achieve with the adaptation. But in retrospect, it has the same pacing problems as the rest. It seems like what should’ve happened is someone should’ve looked at that first episode and gone “hey, that looks great! But when we adapt it for real, let’s slow it down and maybe do a chapter or two at a time.” It both set a standard for animation that couldn’t be met by the succeeding episodes, as well as the standard for the breakneck haphazard pace that unfortunately the rest of the episodes did follow.

Bobson Dugnutt

Uzumaki felt like if someone had to make a show based on my nephew reading the manga and then trying to tell me about it. “So this guy is obsessed with spirals, and then orders a thing and becomes a spiral. Oh and a girl has a spiral in her head and it eats a guy! Oh and someone becomes a snail!”

Pete Ficken

Another great cat manga is Taiyo Matsumoto’s Cats of the Louvre… and hey you guys could always cover the anime adaptation of Ping-pong. The manga(collected in two omnibus volumes), is my favorite of all time

Bobson Dugnutt

For the Sonic OVA comments section, we could combine Nick’s love of video games and fast food and call it ‘Sonic Dive-in’

Big Chunk of the fanbase

Nick saying the plot starts to feel dizzying, hey buddy, guess what also is dizzying, a spiral baby

Dean Lowdon Clear

Wow, I’m actually shocked at how bad this show was! It now sits alongside FLCL as easily the worst two shows that have been covered on this podcast.

Duke Lion

I worked at Hollywood video in the early 2000s and watched all of the Tomie movies. Had no idea they were adaptations of anything.

Skizz

Would love it if they watched and talked Gurren Lagann. But after Violet and Uzumaki, I just hope they get back on track with shows that are at least interesting, and preferably good.

Will K.

Has the crew (especially Heather) heard about the new feature-length VR interactive movie Mobile Suit Gundam: Silver Phantom? I haven't tried it yet but will definitely dust off the ol' Oculus for it soon. Seems like a venn diagram of things you guys would like!

Kam

I keep thinking about the live action Uzumaki movie from the early 2000s. I watched it with my mom not knowing what we were getting into and it made us laugh so hard until we were genuinely horrified. Gotta rewatch
