Robot House

This is my favorite new manga/ anime of the past few years. I just love its whole vibe

J0hn

In about a years time, I have watched all the current episodes of one piece. THE ONE PIECE IS REAL!

Deandre Gibson

As a one piece fan I love that the VA for turbo granny also plays luffy

Spudowski

I'm not here to dispute Dubs vs Subs because both are EXCELLENT on this show, but I will say however that the English dub of Turbo Granny is voiced by Barbara Goodson who did the american voiceover for Rita Repulsa of Power Rangers, which won me over immediately.

Doc Robot

Hey if you like the Gamera films there is a character in this series inspired by the kaiju (Vamola/Bamora) but you won't meet her for awhile. This is a top tier adaptation that will likely define the generation, can't wait to hear your thoughts on this first stretch.

Rory McDaid

I am so up for the podcast to cover some Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. It’s a firm favourite of mine - not every episode is a winner, because of the structure of the show moving between episodic and longer narrative eps, but it overall creates a fantastic cohesive thing with some real strong highlights that even some 20 years on I still think of as some of my favourite anime moments.

Dynamite In The Brain

In terms of production, there is a degree of difference between a Netflix anime and a TV broadcast anime. Trigger have talked about how Netflix contractually need you to turn in a show 3 months prior to release, unlike the Japanese broadcast model where episodes end up being worked on during the week of broadcast, even though technically they too should have been turned in months earlier. This tends to lead to Netflix anime being consistent visually. That might mean consistently great (Delicious in Dungeon, Dandadan, Ranma 1/2) or consistently mediocre (Garouden), but you rarely get the rollercoaster of quality from schedules crashing that you do with many broadcast anime. Uncle From Another World is the only Netflix anime I can recall absolutely failing to release on time.

Spayde

My name is Dan, and I think the name of the anime is good.

MK

I love how high octane the show is, but what really makes it shine for me are the genuine moments. Like when Okarun admits he didn't want to miss the chance to be friends with Ayase and she scolds him for preemptively trying to push her away. It's nice to see them realize they care about each other.

Fan comment section for this series should be called Dandafan

My wife had never watched Anime before we met, and I’ve tried to introduce her to a bunch of anime. She hasn’t liked many of them, but here is the bizarre list of anime she’s really loved: Chainsaw Man (her first anime) Spy Family Dan Da Dan

One of the few action manga where the leads all act like real people with dimensions to ‘em. They’re able to be goofy, dumb, cool, brash, kind, mean, and confident at turns, and it never feels inconsistent to their characters. First season was fantastic, but oh man, you ain’t seen nothing yet. (Current with the manga.) Genuinely love this cast of knuckleheads.

Alex Chosid

The voice actor for Okarun in the Japanese track is the same actor as Tanjiro in Demon Slayer. I clocked it immediately but the range is rad. Also describing sumo wrestling as “some big ol’ boys roughhousing” got a big laugh out of me.

Kevin Ela

I’ve got a segment suggestion if you’re open to it! Y’all could look up the wiki page whenever they encounter a cryptid or famous ghost. For example in the second episode they said the sumo they encountered was a Flatwoods Monster which is traditionally found in West Virginia.

William

Banana history. The Gros Michel or Big Mike was the primary banana cultivar we had in the US until a fungus wiped it out in the 60s. Many banana flavored candies like Laffy Taffy are based on big Mike. The Cavendish banana that we have now is what replaced it.

Zeon Liberation

Isn’t that actually war though? How mundane violence becomes. And the statistics versus the tragedy

Zeon Liberation

Sumo is amazing! The January tournament is happening right now! Go watch it on NHK world

LagerB

Fun to hear y’all back, current, and with such a fun show to talk about

Rachael

MORE GHOST STORIES. Once again, the Heather Ann Campbell lore drop is superb. If you like ghost stories and spooky things, I highly recommend the podcast Otherworld!

Riley Snowdon

I think the review chain reactions segment should be called dandadiscussion

Riley Snowdon

I loved Dandadan so much! A show that actually opens with the propulsion and irreverence of Chainsaw Man that still has characters with depth and meaning. This show is amazing and I’m so hyped to hear you talk about the rest! Love from Australia

I started reading this last last year after hearing Nick rave about the series. While the anime dub and sub say different things about the penis, the manga has turbo granny say she wants to "gobble your schlong." that's when I knew the series was for me. Also I was doubly in when the alien that shows up at the Momo's house isn't just some sumo, it's the flatwoods monster from West Virginia. You can fight them in fallout 76. Also while reading the series over your break, I watched chihayafuru pilot and was introduced to Karuta. There is a passing reference in the dandadan manga that I understood because I just watched that series pilot. So thank you Heather for broadening my understanding of Japan.

Heather's ghost/non-ghost story gave me chills what the FUCK Heather I was alone in the dark Wellness Room/Quiet Room for my break at the hospital I work at, listening to the podcast, and I got spooked and had to leave...

To Wiger concerning Wiger's Piece: I do not recommend watching one episode of One Piece a day; especially since they are remaking it in the upcoming years. Quite a bit of filler and slow points, and some of the aging animation early is rough. Instead I would recommend doing what I've done since you initially set out on Wiger's Piece, and have now stuck with myself for 305 days: Read the manga, ~1 chapter a day. It's way more efficient and very manageable...and the Manga is EXCELLENT so far. It's a breezy read, you've already read some, so you could just pick up where you left off. If you miss a day, read two the next day, or if you miss a few read a few; just hit the moving target. I started 305 days ago (I mark every 50 days on my phone calendar to keep track) and am successfully chapter 305. It's a habit now. In general, goal is 365 ch/year. This method is much easier than watching, and reading was suggested to me by a friend who has both read and watched it all. You can read the manga, which will never be remade, then jump in on the remade anime as it comes out in the coming years. Cheers, and whatever you decide to do, I'm happy you are rejoining the journey to the Grand Line and beyond! I'm so happy I started reading this and have stuck with it almost a year, I love it!

jollytheoldsaint

Dandadan? I hardly know dadan! ....Little dadadad joke.

Nicholas Jetter

Boy, i was not ready for the whiplash that Dandadan gave me after finishing Frieren just days before. Thoroughly enjoyed the first 2 episodes though and looking forward to watching more!

Deacon Raid

I'm really glad you guys are covering this. I watched it over the break with my wife and then immediately dove into the manga to get current. It inspired me to get my first bit of anime-themed decor too. I didn't know it was a romance anime and I think I will have to seek more of those out based on how much I enjoyed this series. Momo getting flustered when Okarun's name is said or he repeats the catchphrase is such a fun bit, especially when she spent the first bit of the episode saying she wanted her own Ken Takakura. She also never tells him why he can't use his name around her. Regarding the songs, they rule. The full CREEPY NUTS video for Otonoke is very trippy (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRwHpyOq4P4). I watched it while high and it was an Experience. The end credits also mirror the official music video from ZUTOMAYO (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IeyCdm9WwXM). I think the opening is in the conversation for best intro, any other contenders? Cowboy Bebop? Eva?

Erik

I went to the theatrical preview of Dandadan’s first three episodes and when that OP hit on the big screen is one my favorite theater moments of 2024!

Transfem Surge!

Please do stand alone complex. I use SAC(1&2) and Bebop as emotional testers with friends. 😅

Bobson Dugnutt

Chain reactions could be DanDaBate or DanDaDanswers

Murphy

The War of the Rohirrim is a little herky-jerky but otherwise good looking. Its biggest problem is that it’s shit from the butt. The dust from a franchise that’s been mostly milked dry.

Kyle Murray

I like the description of it being like the X-files, but I think that in itself falls a bit short. It's a coming of age story of two teens discovering their sexuality combined with the X-files. The monsters and situations are stand-ins for real-life anxieties and fears that teens (particularly in Japan) go through. The aliens have the appearance of Japanese salarymen because they represent the stereotype of Japanese salarymen being lecherous and sexually aggressive. Similarly, in my read Okarun losing his weenie likely a stand-in for the pressures that awkward young boys feel to be tough and masculine.

Rin Manzano

Asian grocery stores like Seafood City and 99 Ranch Market (get it?) carry Thai bananas! Y’all should do a live taste testing on air for Get Plate.

DebrafromHR

Please watch stand alone complex, it has great music that's still on my Spotify and Makoto is such a great character. Its one of the anime series that made me want to write -
