There's a Juni Ito short story called "The Inn" about a hot spring that goes down to hell. Worse than lava, imo

Niall

What is this Bleach erasure?!? That's the true Big 3! Love y'all and love the pod so much!

Rachael

Haven't even STARTED the episode yet but I see you are doing GURREN LAGANN NEXT AND MY BODY IS READY. LET'S FUCKING GO!!!! 🔥🔥🔥

Console Canon

Hell yes, I was inspired by this podcast to watch all of Gurren Lagann last December and I can’t wait to hear your commentary on it. It goes in a lot of unexpected directions.

Garrett MacFalda

Heather is spot on about Solo Leveling season 2. I think the sweet spot for big centerpiece action sequences is one tick before it's way too chaotic to follow. Solo Leveling stays on that thin line better than almost anything else I can remember.

The discussion about watching older shows displayed on CRTs reminded me that I didn’t get an HDTV until a couple years into owning my PS3. I had that thing hooked up to a 13-inch CRT via the AV out port and made do. I remember thinking that even on cheap, old technology, blu-rays still looked better than DVDs. If you still have a ps3 and a CRT, that would be the easiest way to do it. Now I’m inspired to have my next rewatch of my Evangelion DVDs be in my retro game nook.

it's a little bit crazy to me that the studio Science Saru did both Dandadan and Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. I like Scott Pilgrim okay but it has a stiffer, low-fidelity style that never comes close to the best moments of Dandadan. i guess they're just a versatile bunch who can turn their hands to different styles! i am also a big fan of their series 'Devilman Crybaby' and 'Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!' which are two VERY different shows.

“Look what daddy did” still has me bussin up. Also sounds like a plausible title of a Crunchyroll anime

MK

This show rules, season two can't get here fast enough. One thing I know for sure is that I don't envy whoever has to do the new OP. They've got big shoes to fill because Otonoke fits the tone of the show perfectly.

Matthew Siegel

Looking forward to Matt getting deeper into Dragon Ball and inevitably getting Goku-swole.

Doc Robot

Even though it stops at an unfortunate point of the story these 12 episodes might be one of the most successful adaptation of a manga I've seen. Gets the humor, thrills and emotional moments across perfectly. What a show! Side note for Matt: I just watched a show called Sonny Boy that I think you'd be into as the resident Lost fan. It's a supernatural mystery island anime from the director of One Punch Man season 1 and Space Dandy. It's gorgeous and weird, look it up! Wait it also has a cat granny? is this a trend!?

Erik

I’m looking forward to hearing more about Matt’s Dragon Ball journey! I recommend reading the prequel/side story manga “Jaco the Galactic Patrolman” although the 11th chapter and bonus story Dragon Ball Minus that tie it in to DB are not available on their own in the Shonen Jump app, they’re only in the full collected volume.

The Mountain That Abides

A little late to the party here, but there is a graphic novel adaptation of the first book of the Bible. Back in 2009, R. Crumb illustrated the Book of Genesis in its entirely. If you are familiar with his work, it is exactly as unhinged as you might expect. I always hoped he would move on to adapt some of the other books, but that was not to be.

Triften

I noticed that following "two girls in their underwear use a naked boy as a surfboard", some of Dandadan's "blue" humor goes into stealth mode in episode 11 with the anatomy dummies being named "Taro" (as in taro root) and "Hana" (flower). I can't see this in any other way than references to genitalia. This show is a hoot.

Vic

I love Botan Rice Candy as well, great stickers

Brainwascht

Oh hell yeah about Gurren Lagann, I watched that all the way through after the pilot presentation ep.

H.E. Burrows

OK but you gotta continue the Type Casting™️. If Ringo is a ground type pokemon trainer, what are the other Beatles? Also looking forward to Gurren Lagann!

David Mucci

Just like Ranch, I read Death Note in high school — it was actually the first manga I ever read. I grew up reading a lot of comics, mostly Marvel, when my sister got me into this “different” thing that fascinated me by telling a long-form story I wasn’t used to in a comics format. I remember getting far in, but not being able to finish at the time. I didn’t read another manga until this podcast (when I picked up Chainsaw Man), and since then have watched the Death Note anime, finally coming full circle and getting closure on the story.

SchniedelWutz

I probably won't be able to watch Gurren Lagann legally in Germany. I only found one streaming service, that only has the last to episodes and only for 2 days more. That sucks

Soupy

I think I’ll miss everyone singing Dandadan Dandadan Dandadan the most now that this season is over. I laugh every time (and join in, earning the occasional sideways glance…). If you haven’t listened to other songs from the band who is appropriately named for this series - Creepy Nuts, I highly recommend them. They did a banger Chainsaw Man outro and another banger intro to Mashle. Very fun to throw on and bop to.

Pete Ficken

Jiji is my guy! He tickles me so much! Ahah! Hiroshi Abe’s face is cemented in my memory as Mitsuo from Godzilla 2000! Also- if love the idea of a young protagonist that has a penchant for flattering older women, that’s a key feature to the male lead of the wonderful heartwarming manga series, hirayasumi.

Chris Reyes

A candy question: does Matt’s love of all things gummy originate from Kingdom Hearts? And on the topic of CRTs: I promise that in Los Angeles you can pick them up for free or low cost, even sometimes Trinitrons, via Craigslist or Offerup. It’s part of what has allowed the competitive Super Smash Brothers Melee community to thrive for 25 years. There are still a ton out there.

Andy Hunter

I loved the little detail that, after Okarun had powered up, he took a split-second to neatly put his shoes and socks away at super-speed before he took off after them. Give me all the William Tell Overture-scored high speed chases you got.

Pete Ficken

Oh man! I’m in a perpetual cliffhanger, at the end of volume 5(the halfway mark) of Shūzō Oshimi’s vampire series, Happiness. Volume 6-10 are out of print! 😥

Sean Sakimae

Two things: (1) I took Momo helping the anatomy figures as her "helping them" with their love, rather than come to terms with the fact that she has grown to love Okarun. It's easier for her to channel that energy into helping others get together, than deal with her inability to tell Okarun how she feels about him. (2) In the Get Plate segment, when you were all discussing your favorite candy as children-- I FUCKING KNEW Heather's was going to be Botan's rice candy! I said it out loud, seconds before she did. As a kid, I was freaked out by it at first- "why can't I get off this goddamned second plastic wrapper?!" Until my grandmother explained it to me that it was edible rice paper.

That Josh

Give me a stale Lemon Head hard candy out my great grandmothers dusty candy dish. Also, thoughts on watching upcoming series Lazarus?

Jack Byrne

The cliffhanger this episode ended on was a drag, since even the issues these acts occur in didn't end that way. The good thing is, the next series is out in 4 months. As for Gurren Lagann, I watched the series after the episode last year and had a great time with it. You guys are going to have a tough time finishing the whole series in time to cover Lazarus (Shinichirō Watanabe's new show) when it starts at the beginning of April. I think if you keep to a brisk pace of 5 episodes of anime per podcast episode, you should be able to squeeze in just after Lazarus starts up. Good luck!

Kayzeemonster

Just thought I note that Okarun is in English class learning how to say jealousy in English and not actually the word itself. Like Matt, I've also decided to take on a couple of anime projects too. Trying to get through all of YuYu Hakusho (my first time) and eventually wanna get back to JoJo season 2. Also, has anyone mentioned yet that the author of Dandadan, Yukinobu Tatsu, used to be an assistant for the Chainsaw Man manga? Back in December I was taking a sewing class and a fellow student told me about it after seeing my Pochita keychain

Kyle Murray

I sincerely love that the show initially sets up Gege as the suave romantic rival for Okarun before revealing that he's actually the cornball weirdo romantic rival for Okarun

XRedGambit

I read all the released Manga late last year when I needed something to read. I watched all the show and it was awesome. But the thing that I have to avoid because it gets into my head and won't leave, DAN DA DAN DAN DA DAN DAN DA DAN DAN DA DAN

Transfem Surge!

I bet the third album was You'll Rebel To Anything or Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy

Edwin (edoco18)

I completely agree with Wiger! Trains are awesome. Listening to this while on a train from Gothenburg to Stockholm and the vibes of going cross country on a train, sitting in a comfortable chair looking at the countryside with a coffee is unbeatable.

Dangalf

Long time listener first time weeber. I have also recently decided to be the dragon ball guy. I've read through the manga and now I'm watching the anime. Are there any games I should play through?

Bobson Dugnutt

for Gurren Lagann, here are some things you could call the comments section: Gurren La-conversations (or Gu-rrenversations) Gurren Login Gurren Laganalysis

Waffleheart

I'm currently behind a few episodes but hearing Heather talk about the Jason Bourne series lifting an action scene from Noir reminded me how No Doubt's music video for Ex- Girlfriend lifts an bathroom fight scene from the hyperviolent and sexualized Kite OVA, including Gwen being tackled out of a bathroom window of a sky scraper

Deacon Raid

This show made me a weeb. Now anime has become a regular part of my wife and I's weekly date night. We are excited to start Gurren Lagan this weekend. So glad to have this show in my life introducing me to new things. I can vouch for there being some good Amtrak lines. The Empire Builder route takes you through Glacier National Park. And its actually faster (and less stressful) to travel from Portland to Seattle by train than either driving or flying. I will probably book a trip soon to check out the next exhibit at Museum of Pop Culture in Seattle about Asian comics. (https://www.mopop.org/exhibitions/asian-comics)

okamiki

Even if you guys don't cover it for the show, I really hope you all continue watching in a few months with the next season comes out. The whole story is an absolute riot. But more importantly I am beyond thrilled for you all to experienc Gurren Lagan. It easily one of my top five anime. The highs make you feel like you can fly and the lows will make you cry. JUST WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK I AM!

FuryGarruk

The only 3 anime my wife loves: 1. Spy x Family 2. Dan Da Dan 3. Chainsaw Man

Thank you for the push to watch Dandadan, I never thought I'd enjoy a show about a search for balls so much. It was really funny, had moments of intense emotion, and a relentless pace. I also just got caught up on Solo Leveling S2, another show yall inspired me to watch. I had a few brewdogs tonight after a lovely family birthday, and watching Jinwoo uppercut a demons head into a pillar of explosive light made me so happy as a nightcap to my nightcap(s). Knowing Heather, and maybe the boys if they are up to date, were equally stoked at such a ludicrous thing made me very happy and inspired me to comment for the first time. I don't have any anime buds, so thank you all so much for such a fun podcast that makes me feel happy/heard/seen/etc. Also, kudos to the restraint on Nick (and Matt?!) for realizing it wasn't the time to get into dem snow gators when the Dandadan ep12 hot spring "gators" appeared... but... they were... whhhhhiiite...

James Newbold

Thanks G.A. for putting me onto Dan Da Dan which is a new fave for me! You've made great points about how soundtrack and colour are used in the series and I wanted to particularly highlight Fernando Sor's Mozart Variations used in the leadup to episode 5's teethkiss *shudders*. Any classical guitarists would have picked it up immediately, and the way the mood of the scene changes is matched perfectly by the movements in the song. I much preferred it to the William Tell Overture needledrop. Excited that Get Anime'd will now finally help me get around to Gurren Lagan. Cheers from Australia!

Next time Ash is in the studio, could you please check in with him to see how his father is doing? 💞
