Sexy Grandma's Retirement Home

I assume our hosts have already learned this lesson, but for anyone who hasn’t, do NOT look up the canonical age of anime characters like Yoko. Trust me, you’ll be happier not knowing. Also, I agree the ocean is more like space than underground. You go deep enough and it’s pitch black like deep space and the creatures that live down there are aliens!

Pete Ficken

To Matt— The Game boy advance titles Dragon ball Z: the legacy of goku 1&2, are actually quite playable and cozy! You could probably guess that they’re quite spoiler’ie

Drangus

I'm excited to watch gurren lagan because I loved the animation in Kill la Kill but I think it's absolutely disgusting and is all about naked teenagers fighting each other. So hopefully this is less horny. I came back after the episodes, think I'll sit this one out too. It's just really embarrassing I cannot get over how gross I feel watching this

Rory McDaid

An absolute joy to revisit Gurren Lagann. One of my all timers that I haven’t rewatched for a good few years. GL was a big one for me back when it aired - one of those shows that I was so desperate to consume each week that I would download the raw files as soon as they were available so I could watch immediately and be confused as heck, but enjoying the visual madness, while waiting for the fansubs to drop. I remember importing the soundtracks and bits back then as just had to own anything related that I could. So pleased you guys are covering it, and hope you enjoy!

john Smith

I just got back from my Honeymoon in japan and im SO deeply anime pilled from the trip and now you are going over one of my favorite shows of all time. Im afraid im just going to completely revert back to my middle school anime kid ways.

I think the Frieren being #1 on my anime list is partially recency bias, and partially the fact that exponentially more people are watching anime now than there ever has been before and Frieren is made for mass appeal. I have teenagers who have been raised on anime, and trying to get them to watch anything from before 2010 for the last few years has been pretty difficult, although both of their tastes are broadening as they get older. All of their friends watch anime as well, and have had similar opinions about 'old' anime. I do think Frieren's ranking is a mixed bag being good, being new, and getting ranked by a lot of people who are new to anime and/or new to the world and haven't watched a lot of the old good stuff.

Matthew Siegel

As someone who watched this show on pirate fansub streams as it aired, the mecha will always be Ganmen to me. I get that Gunmen rolls off the tongue easier and has a Gundam parallel, but Ganmen literally means face, and they’re giant faces!!

Joe Siemsen

Talking about early internet and seeing the username Dangalf reminded me of silly, fun, and sometimes cringe usernames. One of mine that I love but also know is absolutely cringe is "JosephirothxNightmare". Which brings me to ask do any of the hosts have any usernames like that that they are willing to share?

Elliot Reynolds

Don't know if any of the gang read these and don't know if he's already seen it but a big recommendation for Nick, if he loved Evil Does Not Exist, is to check out Perfect Days by Wim Wenders. Recommend it to anyone.

john Smith

I was deeply closeted when this show came out. While Leeron does have a stereotypical personality, i feel one of the shows strengths is that all the side characters get real moments. Because they give Leeron added depth later on, i never felt like his queerness was being made fun of in a mean way, but in the way that friends who truly love you can tease you and its ok. He is a queer character that comforted me.

Zeon Liberation

For Matt. Uniqlo currently has a Dragonball collab if he wants to rep his new fandom.

Zeon Liberation

Elon paid to have Lisa Simpson say that he was smart in that episode.

Ben Walkup

There needs to be a third podcast where they can just talk about Austin Powers, Star Wars, Leno, etc. I suggest "Get Stuffed"... cuz it's a show about stuff, you see

Rory McDaid

Next week’s episode will be interesting, as it will cover probably both my favourite and least favourite episode in Gurren Lagann’s run. Ep3 is near perfect to me, introducing one of my favourite side characters in Viral, then ep4 which is fiiine but so much weaker than much that surrounds it - but most importantly was of course linked to the infamous animation controversy that led to a Gainax exec and co-founder resigning. That was a wild time online!

Bobson Dugnutt

Sorry Matt, but I have to disagree. I think underwater is the opposite of outer space, because in outer space, you are dry, and underwater you are wet.

Will K.

If Nick enjoyed Evil Does Not Exist and Drive My Car, I think he'll also enjoy Ryusuke's earlier films, Happy Hour (a 4.5 hr epic about the friendship of four women) and The Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy (a 3-film anthology, each with an element of happenstance and deceit). I love his films and agree that the latest one rips. (Asako 1 & 2 is another film, but I didn't like it as much)

Bobson Dugnutt

Milhouse would like the show because they get right to the fireworks factory

beatnikbedlam

watching this show again has been a pretty interesting experience because it was SO important to me when i first saw it around 20 or so, it’s one of the shows that got me hooked on anime. the “believe in the me who believes in you” was so impactful at a time when i was struggling with my mental health. but it’s been almost 15 years and my tastes have changed! i’m still having a great time, it’s super nostalgic and fun to watch. it’s just not hitting the same way it used to. but not in a way that feels disappointing at all! it’s just odd to think about such a different version of myself watching it

Big Chunk of the fanbase

Ok Matt talking about echo park got me thinking about this wild historical tidbit I heard, when Japan was potentially planning on invading mainland us, they had internal documents where they were planning on changing a lot of the names of these locations, and one of those was changing echo park to Neko park. And yes that was a lie

Rachael

I'm so happy you are finally covering one of my all time favorite series! Heads up for the guys and everyone else watching Gurren Lagann for the first time. The fourth episode has a significant change in animation style that was very jarring and unpleasant for me. But it's the only episode that looks like that! So keep watching because that beautiful animation comes back!

Riley Snowdon

Uhhh Matt? The opposite of space is old!

Tmacc

SO excited to rewatch this show, I remember watching it circa 2010. It RULES and has very strong themes and very iconic anime sequences, can't wait to rewatch knowing where the show ends up.

theIncompletionist

I’ve been rewatching the Sonic movies a lot. I think it makes sense $7’. -;;)

Mike Lau

I really would love to hear Heather talk about Skeleton Crew!

Notrock

Humbly suggesting Chain Reactions: Gurren Blabbin'

Grant Prusi

My favorite detail of these episodes is when Kamina was locked out of using the gunman, all of the internal display screens showed a silhouette of his head (complete with sunglasses) crossed out. I thought it was hilarious that it said HE SPECIFICALLY could not use it.

William

I absolutely love this show, but I use drills every day. A lot of the time the drills are spinning the wrong way and I can't unsee it

Mauricio Diocis

This is my favorite all time work of fiction. I find it to be personality the best representation of how to convey hope, belief, and courage to yourself and others. I have a big drill with a kamina's dads skull with kamina's glasses on my shoulder. Love when Matt and Nick talked about underground being the opposite of space whole heather chuckled. The boys are about to find out what it means to pierce the heavens.

Murphy

I think Frieren’s popularity is definitely a right time, right place scenario. I cried so many times when I saw Violet Evergarden for the first time, I had just gotten into anime and thought it was transcendent. Years later, when I watched it as you all watched it, I thought it was Just Okay. It couldn’t replicate the impact it had because by that point, I had watched Frieren and I think it’s far more successful at doing everything Violet Evergarden attempts to do. It’s beautifully animated, it’s meditative, it hits all the anime tropes (tournament arc) without ever pissing me off. So perhaps it just hits less if you’ve seen all the anime that accomplish what Frieren does first and better.

Sllew

To answer Nick - The original Dragon Ball, especially early on, and DBZ are very different shows. DB is more of a comedic adventure, whereas DBZ is all about powering up and overcoming each bad guy. The original Dragon Ball was inspired by Journey to the West, with Goku's name being the Japanese pronunciation of Sun Wukong.

Mat Leonard

I think Frieren being #1 is likely an effect of the massive popularity of manga and anime these days compared to when Cowboy Bebop and Full Metal Alchemist came out. Like, there are 10x more people into anime now and Frieren is the first outstanding anime they’ve seen. When Cowboy Bebop released, anime was still barely a thing in the US. Now, high school kids hang out in the manga section at Barnes and Noble and people have Naruto stickers all over their cars.

Zachary Born

I am traditionally pretty neutral for subs Vs dubs, but the Japanese language track feels required for this one. Katsuyuki Konishi does an unbelievable job voicing Kamina. Gurren Lagann is my favorite anime. The emotional beats are the best of any medium. I am very excited to join you on this journey.

Xavier Porraz

Matt, now that you've seen a good number of anime what do you think your taste has developed into? What genres do you feel more compelled to try out?

Tmacc

Recent story related to Gurren Lagann: I do CrossFit competitions. Earlier this year, one of the workouts in an online qualifier ended with a "part B" asking you to hit your max possible weight on a 1 rep back squat after the long, fatiguing first part of the workout. I knew the weight I wanted to hit, 90% of my total 1 rep max...but my judge/coach added 15# onto the bar as I stepped up to it. He is also a big anime fan. In the heat of that moment, he looks at me with a pat on the back and says "If you don't believe in yourself, believe in the me who believes in you." I proceeded to fucking nail the lift, and we all popped off. It was a great moment; anime rules, and Gurren Lagann rules. So excited to be rewatching it with you all!

Matthew Siegel

When my wife was in hour 36 (out of 37) of labor with our daughter she was feeling wrecked physically and emotionally and was about to throw in the towel and ask for a c-section, something she had wanted to avoid at all costs. She said she couldn’t go any further and wanted to give in. Not knowing how else to console her, I told her to keep going, and then without thinking said “If you don’t believe in yourself, believe in me, because I believe in you and I know you’re strong enough.” She held off on calling for surgery, thankfully progressed fast after that, and our baby was born an hour later. Afterward my wife thanked me for the encouragement to not quit. I now can never share one of my favorite pieces of art with the love of my life because she would find out that I straight up stole that line, and I need her to believe I came up with that off the dome in her time of need. (I’m still definitely going to share it with baby Char Power Siegel at some point.)

hull

One of my favorites. I was a teenager downloading this week by week. Every eeek topped the previous in audacity. Also, I grew up having a little café con pan dulce after dinner. We’re talking 7/8/9/midnight.

James Newbold

I did panic for a moment when Heather said my subscription had stopped. Expecting that $1k any moment now Matt.

mahoney's famous bones

I'm one of the weirdos who listens and does not watch the shows. So, I have to ask: Matt & Wiger have you tried a throw build in BG3? I just did an honor mode playthrough where my party was carried by a Karlach just fuckin chuckin bodies at bodies. Incredibly funny stuff to be like "oh I actually am extremely emotionally invested in this woman successfully throwing one corpse to make another"

Seth Bullocks

I know this show was horny, but didn’t realize just how horny it was. In episode 1 where the beastman bites down onto the group while they’re in the Lagann, Yoko says “mou dame… kitsui…” which Crunchyroll translates to “We’re done for… It’s so cramped!” But it can also be translated as “I’m about to bust… it’s so tight!” Kamina even responds with “Don’t moan over a little thing like this!”

Rational Knife

In the dub, I love when Kamina first tells Simon that his drill will pierce the heavens that Simon’s immediate response was “Why?”

Joshua Kennedy

I re-subbed to join you in your journey. I will have to pick up where I left off so we can finish it together.
