Guys, I have big news... Approximately a year ago, when Nick initially set out on his maiden Wiger's Piece voyage, I set sail too. I was excited, and determined, to ride the waves with him, and the Straw Hat Pirate Crew, as it is my best friend's favorite piece of media. My goal was to read about 1 chapter of One Piece a day...some days I'd read more, some less, but the basic plan was 365 chapters in a year. I'm proud to report that as of this past Monday, a whole year later, I read Chapter 365 of the One Piece manga! In my opinion, this is 100% one of the best fictional worlds in any media. The story is great, and the characters are strong, but the WORLD is unlike anything I've else I've encountered. The slow, methodical approach has made consuming such a large piece of media very manageable, and I plan to continue. There are...only...1128 chapters currently, so I will be completely caught up in like 2028! Thank you Nick for helping inspire me to finally set out on this wonderful journey into a world I now adore! I would, personally, highly recommend the manga over the anime, as it is MUCH more manageable to consume.

Dynamite In The Brain

Please do not take the early arcs of Orb as historical fact. Part of the point of the story is that it's about Japanese misunderstanding of this period of European history. There's a narrative reason it's referring to the C Relgion and the P Kingdom, rather than Catholicism and Poland.

Leeron is low key the smartest person in the world.

I’ve been so looking forward to, as well as dreading, getting to these episodes. Kamina makes such an unbelievable impact within 8 episodes. Simon’s final line about what they lost is one I still think of regularly near 20 years on, and even Matt reading it on the pod made my chest tighten slightly. It still blows my mind that this silly, goofy show can have such emotional impact and part of why so many love it of course. So excited for y’all to get to everything that comes next. Kamina’s death is devastating but also completely necessary, its impact is so large because he casts such a huge shadow over everyone else in the show. Who would Simon and the rest of the crew become if they were dedicated to following Kamina’s whims? Where would their development come from? I love that it opens up to that question by removing Kamina, while also desperately wishing for the alternate reality where he lived on and where they’d all be.

MK

We've come to it at last, the episode that made me drop the show back in the day. I had spent a whole evening binging the show and loving it, then episode eight knocked me on my ass. I was so blindsided and truly bummed out by Kamina's death that I stopped watching that night and never came back. This time around I'm fully on board, all the way to the finish line. Let's see how far our boy Simon can go!

Spoiler: Matt talking about hot soup making him sleepy, makes me think of one of the funniest parts from crono trigger. Where Crono has to compete in a feat of strength against Ayla by consuming soup and it is implied that Crono gets soup drunk

Really glad you are enjoying orb! On a separate note, I was listening to the “get played” about street fighter 2 today, and was wondering if any of you have heard of the anime “high score girl”? It’s a romance that is centered around fighting games and arcade culture of the early 90s. Really enjoy both the main feed and this podcast so thanks for the entertainment!

The Urkel phenomenon was really something. Family Matters was conceived as a spinoff of Perfect Strangers. Jo Marie Payton played Harriette Winslow, the elevator operator on that show. The producers loved her character so they created a spin-off that focused on her and her family. Steve Urkel first appeared midway through season one, and by the 9th and final season, Payton had left the show and was recast.

Rational Knife

What a testament to this show that despite it being a 2nd viewing for me it can still hit hard. He got to go out the way he wanted by fighting alongside and protecting those He loved with a bad ass finisher. So now I can’t help but wonder. If in your final moments you were able to use an anime finisher to save everyone you loved what would it be? For me it would be going super Saiyan and throwing a Kamehameha wave.

Zeon Liberation

Careful with grapefruit! It can adversely interact with all sorts of medications.

Matthew Siegel

With regards to the horniness level, I’ve always considered the show to be “pre-porn horny”. It’s a kind of tween mindset where boys are fascinated by big bazongas but mystified by girls themselves, and notably before those urges have curdled. I completely understand how it can skeeve a passerby out, but for me it’s always been innocently charming. I compare and contrast it with a “post-porn horny” show like Kill la Kill, where the Magical Girl Transformation Sequence prominently features a smash zoom into the main character’s labia.

Matthew Siegel

Fun fact: the four acts/chapters of the show can be identified by the episode titles. Each title is a quote from within the episode, and each act uses quotes from one character; The first act were all Kamina quotes.

parenthesesONE

But surely he comes back.. he comes back right?.. RIGHT?

Ronny

So glad to hear y’all are giving Orb a chance. To Nick’s point, the Japanese title using Chi, can not only be read as Earth, but also wisdom, truth, and blood, which are all the focus of the story the anime is telling.

Sexy Grandma's Retirement Home

On my original watch when Kamina died I was not only shocked, but I was also shook. This is when I knew the show was going to be more than some dumb action show that just threw explosions and titties in your face to keep you interested.

Rachael

I knew what was coming in episode eight and despite having seen this series at least five times through, it still got me like a knife through the heart. I cry at this episode every time. I also get goosebumps every time Kamina is monologuing about how Simon needs to believe in himself. Fucking chills. Kamina is, hands down, my favorite anime character of all time. When they killed him I couldn't believe it because you just didn't DO that to a main character! I'm really excited for you all to continue watching this series. Where can it go without Kamina? Oh, you better hold the fuck on because it just gets fucking crazier and better. ❤️ There's a reason this is my favorite anime of all time.

I used to eat grapefruit like an orange (not in the tub though) for my breakfast. I loved them. I love grapefruit flavors too. But all of that changed the day my heart attacked. Now it can cause me to od on my meds.

Zeon Liberation

Some good soups: She-crab soup Snapper (turtle) soup Italian Wedding

I remember watching ep. 8 on a Sunday morning and sitting there. In grief because y’know. But excited for the future episodes. But you couldn’t go anywhere on the geeky internet spaces without running into memorials. RIP, King.

Kyle Caulfield

Wiger talking about Orb made me think of the song/album Anthropocentric by the German prog-metal band The Ocean. If you enjoy heavy music, and also science, it's well worth a listen. Makes a great soundtrack for a nice steamy shower with your fruit of choice

Coy_o_Coy

One of the things I love about Forge is that he’s completely, canonically unable to explain how any of the machines he has made actually work. He can definitely build you a refrigerator, but ask him about it later and he might as well be Denji

Cragdweller

Since we're doing Look Back next week, I wanted to recommend the other OTHER manga by Fujimoto, Fire Punch. Set in a post-apocalyptic second ice age, the MC has the gift of being able regenerate his body rapidly. When he encounters another gift user who can spread flames that never extinguish, the two clash and the MC ends up being burned alive and regenerating for a decade. That's his origin story. Fair warning it does have some extremely upsetting themes and scenes, even for Fujimoto. But guys.... you gotta check it out if you haven't. It's only 8 volumes.

Spudowski

So a little guy, finds a bigger guy, finds an even BIGGER guy, then they fight. Is this the plot to Gurren Lagann? No, it's the song premise of They Might Be Giants' 1990 musical hit "Particle Man". I just thought the similarity was funny.

Robot House

I hope you get around to doing the parallel works music videos. Possibly after you finish the series proper. They're not canon( well one might be) but they're all pretty fun.

Luke Swisher

If you're looking for a Ninja Turtles anime, Rise of the TMNT is heavily anime inspired.

Elliot Reynolds

The first time I started Gurren Lagann, around when it came out, I bounced off of it within a couple of episodes because I could not stand Kamina. For whatever reason, I came back to the show just a few years ago and stuck it out. I was super surprised when he died, and I felt empathy for the characters in the show, but I still didn't like him, and my interest in the show grew after he was gone. I think it really soars after episode 8.

Deacon Raid

I don’t know if this comment would be good podcast content, but Grapefruits have been forever ruined for me by this vintage internet video where a woman instructs how it can be used for male pleasure. The sound she makes while demonstrating will haunt you. https://youtu.be/jZh7sASOMbw?si=AznOUf30Lrb2BS0F

Dean Lowdon Clear

I just can not get into this show. A lot happens, but I just find myself bored.

trevor54

In regards to Orbs, does anyone know if it's getting a dub any time soon? I know it's heretical, but I really struggle enjoying a show with subs.

Big Chunk of the fanbase

Weird tangent on GL, I dmed a dnd session with my brothers a few years back, and had to pivot away from a survival sim type desert crossing to something way less intense, so I just started playing the “fight the power” song as they walked, and threw in like 2 battles to keep them interested. That song is now referred to by the fam as “walking music” and we play it constantly

Linux

Heather! The Mobile Suit Gundam novels are so good! I found them in my library’s used book store and I about had a heart attack! They were written before the anime finished so the ending is vastly different but it really plays in to our boy Char being a cunning and conniving little shit!

Amanda Gripe

I listen to episodes late but I pray this message gets to y'all. RIZZO THE RAT HAS RIZZ. I REPEAT. RIZZO HAS RIZZ. is he unfortunately overshadowed by his goofy-yet-loveable alien friend, Gonzo? Of course he is. But I can guarantee you, if they were in an alternative band, Gonzo may be the lead singer getting many chicks (or chickens in Muppet lore)... but Rizzo would be the bassist who would have a steady girlfriend with a kid who loves her man unconditionally. Side note: I teach music and have been using "believe in me who believes in you" to get my students to try hard things (young singers are very afraid of singing high). But I tried it on my choir of adults and had one adult tell me not to bring up her dead anime husband's catchphrase unless I want to see tears... guess I'll have to reserve it for gen z and under to avoid heartache from now on!

Alex Chosid

Kamina’s death hit me pretty hard, which is wild because I watched the unaired version of episode six so two episodes ago he was trying to convince an orphan to shove their finger up his butt so he’d launch over a huge wall and be able to gawk at some titties. Show has real range.

Kevin Stanley

This is an older comment; but if Nick, Heather and Matt did a Star Wars show, it should be called Get Padme'd.

David Mucci

For me, a lot of the enthusiasm I had early on was squandered by episodes 4 and 6. I don’t think I should have felt nothing at the end of episode 8, and while maybe it wasn’t nothing, it wasn’t much, I’m sorry to say.
