Heather, Nick and Matt discuss episodes 9 & 10 of Gurren Lagann.

Comments

Zach

I would absolutely pay for a tier that includes a multi part Rise of Skywalker series. Also you guys have the correct Star Wars opinions.

Merrill Singer

I would totally listen to a Rise of Skywalker series. When I saw it in the theater when C3-PO gets turned sith, a 50-60 year old man cried out in shock. He literally yelped "OH NO!"

Cole Frohling

Want to jump on this train, started reading one piece five months ago, just hit Chapter 500 last night. It's perfect. Another suggestion for Nick and possibly the show is Psycho-Pass. It is Minority Report the anime.

alex Szabo

Matt, get the pants. I gave in to the ads and then bought 3 more pairs in different colors I liked them so much.

Pete Ficken

I truly had to check and make sure I hadn’t listened to this episode already, upon Matt bringing up his Chainsaw man status

Zack Tennenhouse

This was a pretty good episode, but I wish they had spent a lot more time talking about Star Wars. I hate that The Force Awakens was the first major victim of the "everything I don't like is woke" crusade. I felt SO much "Star Wars is BACK" optimism walking out of episode 8 at the time, nothing could have prepared me for the disappointment of The Rise of Skywalker.

XRedGambit

I'm only a bit into the episode but Ash had the best joke that was glossed over. When asking if Ash knows who bill oriley is he said he's heard the song. Ash I hope you see this and keep slinging out those bangers, if the others step over your joke just put them in a pokeball.

MK

Let the hate flow through you! Give us the Rise of Skywalker episode. Let's burn this mother down!

The first time I watched Gurren Lagann was in my college anime club where we watched it MST3K-style and I'll always remember when Adiane started speaking from her Gunman and someone pointed out her vag*na was monologuing.

MacheteOfOdin

If Nick is a fan of Adiane, I recommend he check out another character her Japanese voice actor (Michiko Neya) portrayed. Arachne from Soul Eater. As her name implies, she's a spider lady. She's also mean and a BTGC (sorry for being crass but that's the best description, visually).

Matthew Siegel

A fun little detail is that the four generals have names rooted in the four DNA bases. Thymilph - Thymine Adiane - Adenine Guame - Guanine Cytomander - Cytosine

KidKimura

Until today I don't think I'd ever heard someone sing Yakety-Yak who wasn't doing an impression of Arnold Schwarzenegger in Twins.

Exotic Bean

Really fun sounding record for you guys. The show is so much fun when you're goofing around so much. I'd pay to hear you guys just shoot the shit, the recaps are my least favorite parts of the show.

Doc Robot

New anime season time! Some stand outs so far: Kowloon Generic Romance: in an alternate reality version of the walled city a woman discovers a mysterious connection to a coworker. Love the retro character design in this! ZatsuTabi -That's Journey-: girl failure mangaka tries to spark her creativity by taking trips out of Tokyo. This is gonna be THE choochoo anime of the season. Please Put Them On, Takamine-san: a background character accidentally discovers the school's top student/athlete/idol can redo any situation by taking off her underwear. She blackmails him into silence and forces him to be her "closet" for her spare garments. An assertive beauty bullying a beta, not sure who would be into this. And One Piece is back! The anime has been on break since last year so this is huge for the up to date fans. The manga takes frequent breaks so this helps with OP withdrawal.

Nicholas Frank “Burger Boy” “Tiger” “Priapism” Wiger

Seth Gile

Looking forward to the Get Reyed miniseries.

Exotic Bean

All the hosts should have canonical anime crushes like Nick's Bug lady and Heather's Char Aznable. Who ya got, Matt?

Dan

love hearing wiger talk about haikyuu! one of my favorite anime of all time and what got me to understand sports and sport fandom

Deandre Gibson

I could here the Zelda chest opening music as nick unlocked a new kink in "sexy bug lady"

Rational Knife

Fun fact. In the English dub Nia is voiced by Hynden Walsh who is the voice of Starfire in teen titans and teen titans go. Both of those characters are very similar in terms of their inexperience of the world and she just absolutely knocks that out of the park.

jollytheoldsaint

Love at first sight, despite the other person being fully clothed? For all the spirals going around, that has to be the biggest twist in the series.

Mark Pangle

Matt asking if he has seen a isekai made me do the beautiful mind math. I would say no. Solo leveling imo is not a isekai.

F86: Fantasy is Dead

I can't wait until you cover episode 9. That movie made me fall out of love with Star Wars, like the last Evangelion movie with Heather. Listening to y'all helps me process the grief

Bobson Dugnutt

I’ve never watched The Rise of Skywalker, but if you did a podcast about it, I’d watch it so I could follow along. Perhaps bear in mind that being the cause of many of us to watch it may have an adverse effect on you come the weighing of souls

David Mucci

After being turned off by episodes 4 and 6, this pair of episodes this week really hooked me. The sober and empathetic look at death and grief impressed me, especially coming in a show that had been overall fun and silly to this point. I also want to thank the pod for introducing me to Chihayafuru, which has filled a Fruits Basket-sized hole in my cozy bedtime anime timeslot.

Rory McDaid

Very please to hear that Nick is back on the Haikyuu train. Late season 2 into season 3 is my favourite stretch of the show, with some really great set pieces and great character development across some of the team. The additional Tsukishima time and his direction in the show is a real highlight for me, along with really expanding out the cast in the first half of S2 and setting up rivalries for down the line. I’m rewatching S3 at the moment and having an absolute blast. An all timer!

Jayme Cangelosi

I think I only know about Yakety-Yak because of Tiny Toons? I remember a montage of Plucky Duck doing house chores set to that song for some reason

Jack Byrne

I apologize to everyone for prompting this Jack Ryan ranking.

theIncompletionist

Re-watching this unlocked an Anime memory. I loved it, loved FLCL, and wanted to watch more by Hiroyuki Imaishi. I found Dead Leaves. Beautiful hyperkinetic madness. I can’t believe I forgot about it for so long. Nick, I think you would like it, has a character with a drill for a dick, named Dick Drill. Who I’m convinced inspired Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann …it’s the same drill.

justpickausername

I'm a big voice acting nerd and in the English dub, Simone is voiced by the same person Sasuke and PS4 Spider-Man while Nia is voiced by the same person as Starfire in Teen Titans who has a very similar origin as Nia

Big Chunk of the fanbase

I already feel like the Patreon is a great value, but 5 ep series on episode 9, that’s a tasty onion ring in the fry bag if it happens

Mark Pangle

If Matt wanted to watch a isekai, I found the perfect one: Reborn as a vending machine I wander the dungeon. No idea if it's good, but based on the title it has to be.

RTSNoDak

I loved the layers of greek chorus when Simon is charging to save Nia followed by Banana Gunmen then the whole squad. It really hammered home for me that Kamina's strength was in how he drove others to action, not in his own actions (as illustrated by the "trapped underground" story). Simon doesn't even realize that he already is filling the hole left by Kamina's death by inspiring action. Kamina's strength was never in "doing" so much as "getting done."

clearplastichuman

Hey guys , you were talking about eating crab, im allergic to it but i really wish i could eat it. Thats because i picture it tasting a specific way based on how it looks, and to me it looks delicious. Except for that it could potentially kill me lol. My question is what food tastes different from how you would expect it to taste based on looks, or what food did you wish tasted differently based on how it looks? Another one of this for me are the squishy bugs they eat in the lion king, they look delicious Ok bye be well.

Austin Washington

Just make all of May Star Wars month, but every episode that month is about Episode 9.

DRedd

With even the smallest considerations, ramming a ship at hyper speed working once but bit again makes perfect sense. But Episode 9 didn't want to give anything consideration. You need a ship large and tough enough that it won't immediately break apart hitting hyper speed in real space. You need a target close enough that you won't either jump to hyperspace or, again, break apart before colliding. And you need them to be distracted enough not to realize you are powering up to go to hyper while pointed directly at them so they don't fire on you first. These conditions are super narrow and happened to have been met when Holdo did it. If any of these are off then it's just a flashy method of self-termination.
