Darth Maul’s tainted Tit’s

I just finished orb:OTMOTE and now I can officially mark this as the second anime that has made me wanna pick up a few history books after finishing the show. The first being Vinland Saga, of course.

Since first watching it on vhs, when I was 10 years old, Tonari no Totoro took the spot of my favorite movie of all time. The heart shattering subtext was lost to me at the time, but with several years in Japan, and talking to the locals there about it… I now can’t watch it without sobbing. That poor family goes through so much. Also- still have our fox20 dvd, with the original American dub, and let me tell you, it’s hands down the way to watch. The team that worked on that films American VO, really made it a labor of love 💕

Giving us sweaty weebs each 3 anime recommendation slots is extremely generous and yet still extremely difficult.

Heather(and Matt)! as someone who has been working constantly in the high end cafe business since I was 20… latte art progress and then regression is a real thing. But and you got it right that practice practice practice really does insinuate itself over time… for a perfect steaming tutorial —and what my completion level buddies like to watch for some touch ups to technique— is Lance Hedrick’s steaming tutorial. The guys a multiple world winner for latte comp, and he really gets the technique across. Good luck my friend!

I love you all but I need the record cleared about Bram Stoker. Mary Shelley was challenged by Lord Byron to write a scary story in one night, and she kicked everyone’s ass bc she was such a badass. Bram Stoker was also a cool dude but he was active like eighty years after Shelley and the Romantics. Funny enough I think we associate Dracula and Frankenstein only bc of the Universal monster movies lol. Love u ty!

Choosing to believe that Matt bought the blu-ray for the show solely so he could delve into the uncensored episode 6 in full HD.

I don't know about "Bullet Face," but there is a show from about 5 years ago called "No Guns Life," in which the main character is a hard-boiled, chain smoking detective whose HEAD is a GUN Like, a fully functional snub-nosed pistol the size of a human head. He has a trigger that he can't reach, and will only allow trusted friends to touch, because he refuses to be a "tool" for the system Anime is good

Best part of the recap ep, and I wish there was more of it as it’s so brief, was all the concept art that was shown during the ending credits. Some of it is really cool, and great to see how it evolved to what we ultimately got. So glad the whole gang is fully on board with this series. I Rewatched Ep15 last week for the first time in 15 or so years and, man, hyped me the hell up. Cannot wait to hear the reactions to some of the later stuff and where the show goes.

I haven’t had the chance to watch along with you guys this time, but this was one of the first anime I watched on Netflix about 15 years ago. And I have to say, since then, no other piece of media has made me feel as jubilant as these episodes did. I love this fucking show.

I was so happy to hear all the love for Princess Mononoke, and yes, it is a perfect film! There is a sort of manga/illustrated book by Miyazaki that precedes it (Monokone) that it's loosely based on called Shuna's Journey. Which borrows from Tibetan lore and folktales. It's not very long and doesn't have much text, but the full art on every page tells the story in a fantastical way. It was originally written/illustrated in the 70s/80s but only recently translated into English and republished. you can get this on Amazon, and I highly recommend it.

Damn, episode 15 has to have one of the greatest anime fights I’ve ever seen. As for episode 16, it’s no “Weaving a Story,” and it definitely doesn’t redefine compilation episodes (or whatever the episode preview at the end of episode 15 said it was gonna do). Also, on the Mononoke subject, that and Spirited Away were the first two anime movies I think I ever saw (unless dragging my mom to Pokémon counts). According to Letterboxd, I watched them for the first time two days apart, Mononoke first. While I really liked Mononoke (and it has grown more in my esteem with subsequent watches over the past 13 years), something about Spirited Away rewired my brain and is one of those rare occurrences I’ve had watching a movie where I have said to myself: “where has this movie been all my life?”

I too read Fire Punch after it was brought up. It’s so fucked up. I finished it. And man…I just don’t know. It was awful but beautiful and sad and I never want to think about it again.

Is "itano Circus" what Nick is looking for with regards to bullet hell anime? Named after the animator Ichirō Itano, it's a trademark animation sequence from the Macross franchise that has spawned many imitators. There's a classic AMV "It's The Circus" that is 20 minutes of just Itano Circus sequences. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BzXfVgYCxWI

I enjoyed hearing Nick talk about Princess Mononoke more than I think I enjoyed watching it. Would love to get a month of Ghibli deep-dives from this pod at some point.

One of my fondest memories of high school was the study hall I had one year where the teacher put on episodes of Man vs. Food every day.

Episode 15 made me say “…fuck yeah”

BlueWRXDriver

On Heathers comments about making something for the sake of making it - This is exactly what got me into Gunpla (outside of heathers evangelical enthusiasm for all things Gundam). I needed a physical creative outlet, and to have a cool little guy after doing tedious construction is massively satisfying.

Can't believe what I took from myself when I dropped this show 15 years ago. Gurren Lagann fucking rips!

I think the spicy scale depends on the range of spiciness they offer. I do like 0-5 being standard, but have at least two options off menu. The most disappointing Pad Thai I had was due to spice calibration. It tasted really good, though. They offered 1-5 and I requested 3. They gave me what I would consider a 0. Next time I went there I asked for 5. They gave me what I’d consider a 1. Because it tasted good and it was conveniently close I went back at least a couple more times. I said 5 wasn’t spicy enough so they offered a 7. It still wasn’t challenging me so the next time I asked for a 10 and finally it was what I’d expect a 3-4 to be. My spice tolerance isn’t even super high, but I live in Minnesota, so I guess it’s all relative.

Big Chunk of the fanbase

The reason I love Mononoke so much, is that the “curse” at its core is just anger, anger can make you feel powerful, can allow you to do horrible things with such ease, and sometimes you can even recognize the horrible things that anger can lead you to do, but if you can’t see it for what it is, you can allow it to destroy you, and anger will always turn conflict into violence. So incredible and as someone who was incredibly angry as a kid, ashitakas scar is my one tattoo that I plan to get at some point

Mauricio Diocis

Episode 15 is legit a perfect episode of television. The animation and soundtrack work in total tandem. And not the last time this show hits those highs. This is the truest expression art. Who's everyone's favorite crew member? I can see y'all liking the little freak that fires the cannon, but my favorite is Dayaka from litner village who's name y'all forget every episode. Justice for Dayaka.

First: You were right, this is three-time Super Bowl winner Patrick Mahomes (don't fact-check that). Second: Please do a month of Miyazaki films.

I get that the wordplay in AniMAYhem is too good to pass up but you guys are insane to pause Gurren Lagann here. Normally I watch along with the podcast without getting ahead but there's no way I was going to wait an entire month to see what comes next... and here I am a day later finished the whole series. I won't give any spoilers and will keep most of my thoughts for when you cover the episodes later on but the one thing I will say is Jesus *fucking* Christ Heather wasn't kidding about the finale ending bigger. This is a 10/10 show, no notes.

Spice Levels: Seven as Heather describes it is perfect. A very spicy Thai place here uses a 7 scale, but they don’t list in on the menu and if you ask about it they’ll immediately break the rules and say some items are 11.

cwwalter

I have to weigh in on the spice levels because my favorite place is, I think objectively, insane. My favorite spice place advertises 0-5 then, if you ask for more spice, will tell you they actually do 0-10. If you ask for even more, they admit their internal spice range is 0-15. To me, 16 total spice levels is a level of madness that should not be. I say 0-10 is upper range and I think Heather is probably the most correct for me on default spice range.

Ghibli July or Ghibly would be fun!

Record of Ragnarok being described as a battle of religious figures was hilarious, because I watched it after learning Jack the Ripper fights Hercules. Also, Thor’s hammer is insanely huge

I work in wildlife control and typically have the opposite problem from Matt where I’m catching cats instead of opossums/raccoons/skunks. Here’s a pro tip for anyone trying to catch a wild animal that size. Wrap the trap with a blanket you don’t care about. A raccoon will rip it apart, but it’ll reduce the odds of you taking a direct hit from a skunk. If you do get sprayed, you’ll want to use a mix of Dawn dish soap, Nature’s Miracle, and Hydrogen peroxide to remove the odor. Items that smell like you and their home can also make lost cats easier to trap (in addition to their favorite foods).

Deacon Raid

There’s a stop over for migratory chimney swifts in Portland and people gather to watch them every September. A Cooper’s hawk shows up most nights to catch a meal. When it gets one, everyone claps.

Michael Pemulis

Speaking spicy: every time I go to Elephant Thai, in Minnesota - I have no connection to this restaurant, except that I love their food - I get the Green Curry, medium spice, which is perfect, and then I try a new dish. I just had the Som tam boo pla ra, a cold, shredded papaya salad, and it torched my mouth, Fire Punch style, and I can't wait to eat it again. Just wanted to share that, because you're my favorite Star Wars and Curry podcast. xoxo

Can you guys please do a studio ghibli series. I'm around nick and Heather's age and missed them when I was a kid but I've been going through and watching them with my kids when ever my wife is away and we have daddy daughter movie nights.
