Dynamite In The Brain

On the topic of the confusing geography of where Eve and her fellow refugees live, it's the fictional country of Nafrece. Nafrece is a recurring country in the works of screenwriter Yosuke Kuroda. Specifically it is referenced in Madlax, Best Student Council and Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid before Birdie Wing. For Birdie Wing's purposes it seems to be functioning as both France and the UK (there's real UK post codes and town names used later in the show).

Dynamite In The Brain

Regarding the real Gunpla and Pac-Man appearances, Birdie Wing is an original anime from Bandai Namco Pictures, so they have free rein to make clear references to Bandai, Namco and Sunrise properties. The Gundam connection escalates as the series goes along, with the two leads of the original Gundam series playing important roles later on.

The real question is can Eva eat gundam?

Notrock

Comment why we want the pod to cover it? For one, we haven't even gotten to the golf mafia subplot yet!

MK

I was not expecting a golf anime to have more "what the fuck?" moments than a dystopian sci-fi about a scientist engineering humanity's extinction, but here we are.

Grant Prusi

Turns out Golf is combat.

Steven_pistachio

Speaking of busy designs- i always think of what snk does to their new KOF characters- hats on hats- belted belts- parrots! Bangles! When the early fighters were so elegant!

Zeon Liberation

I immediately went to a donut shop while listening to this.

Birdie Wing is everything i want out of anime. unhinged bullshit played almost completely straight, with just enough winking at the audience that you don’t feel totally unmoored from reality. tons of melodrama with great character writing. hot lesbian mob bosses. it’s just pure uncut fun with no regard for any sort of believability or self-consciousness. it’s the same reason i love JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, and tokusatsu, and it’s why i fell in love with anime to begin with. American media just doesn’t work in that tone often outside of rare cases like Riverdale

KidKimura

That shit was some of the anime-est anime I've ever seen.

Zack Tennenhouse

"This show sucks and is good" was so validating. I said the same thing almost immediately. This was crazy, especially for a pilot, and I don't know if I'll watch more but I did have a blast. What the hell? AniMAYhem is BACK.

I’m really enjoying Gquuuux, and can completely understand not clicking with the busier designs… normally I feel that way too but for some reason I really like the noise of some of these Gquuux ones and variants on classic models, and eagerly awaiting my orders of the red Gundam and the Gquuuux gunpla sets. I do think it’s interesting that in the abbreviated version of the Char episode, shortened from what was in the movie, that the ending of the Char storyline didn’t make it to tv, did it? During the Solomon bits and where he disappeared, in what may have been the incident of him merging with the Gundam. So I feel like that segment has to come back into play eventually and maybe recontextualised from what we saw in theatrical release.

In regards to the people meat - long pig is the name I’ve heard before

Birdie wing is fantastic. Only in anime will you get a girl reconciling the golf styles of her two dads to create the perfect rainbow swing so she can play against her girlfriend

Birdie Wing was absolutely bizarre and I definitely enjoyed watching it. The animation didn't quite do it for me, and it's not what I'm typically into, but I might give it a go. There aren't a ton of episodes it seems? I am a big sports manga/anime fan, so I have some recs for people who enjoy the genre. It's sort of a stretch to call it a "sports" anime/manga, but I highly recommend Initial D. Kodansha has been re-releasing it in some oversized collected volumes that are absolutely gorgeous. The basic pitch is a zoned-out high-schooler is secretly a savant street racer. It was hugely influential on Japanese street racing for a while. The characters look a bit clunky, but my god the cars look insanely beautiful. It's very cool. I haven't watched the anime, full disclosure. I know Nick has discussed Haikyu (volleyball) and Slam Dunk (basketball) on the pod, and those both get a hearty +1 from me. I'd also throw Kuroko's Basketball in the mix (anime and manga are both awesome) and Hajime No Ippo (boxing) as well. Not really "sports" per se, but Gambling Apocalypse Kaiji is an extremely good manga about gambling/games. The main character is a ruffian with a secret talent for bluffing and reasoning his way through games of chance. It has Squid Game vibes. There's an anime (Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor), but I've never seen it unfortunately.

Robot House

Birdie wing just gets more insane and I promise you you will not be able to guess how. To tempt Heather a bit Char's Voice Actor plays a recurring character ( Bandai made the show iirc hence all the Gundam stuff)

Jon Ortiz

Yea Birdie Wing is just the right amount of anime goof to keep me intrigued. Lets see where this insanity goes.

Seth Bullocks

Loved Kaiji. The VA for Kaiji(Masato Hagiwara) also voiced the main characters for Akagi(mahjong and gambling) and One Outs(baseball and gambling). Dude loves voicing gamblers, and is a professional mahjong player himself.

Numlocks

I went and watched Birdie Wing after this weeks episode and I'm on episode 9 right now. I freaking love this show! Its insane. There is a whole mafia plotline involving cyborgs and horny snake golfer ladys with some murder, mafia construction contracts, and underground golf death matches. With references to Evangelion and Gundam thrown in. Dont sleep on Birdie Wing.

Gamblore

The place I'm staying for my vacation is in the middle of a golf course. So I decided to watch more than the pilot to see where it goes. It's kind of Bluelock but with mafia and golf. I like that the one girl just loves gunpla. Don't believe these girls are under 15... Also makes me want to hit up a Top Golf. The other day I went to the pool and saw someone playing a ANBERNIC GBA. Their friend came up and started talking about Balatro, I looked a little closer and asked as politely as I could if they were Matt, and it was! He was playing Mother 3. Was really random and cool to meet you! Hope you had a good vacation Matt!
