I don't have a comment about Gurren Lagann or AniMAYhem, but I am curious if Matt and Ranch have any opinions about the recent Survivor 50 cast announcement 🌚

Deandre Gibson

This episode reminded me I never finished the show

Matthew Siegel

Gurren Lagann episodes 1-15: BELIEVE IN YOURSELF AND YOURS WILL BE THE DRILL THAT PIERCES THE HEAVENS Gurren Lagann episodes 17-18: entitlement and fear of loss turns good people into fascists

Brunch being at any time of the day is nonsense. I would have to leave that chat. I have severed friendships for less.

These two episodes have pushed this show up several levels in the GOAT conversation in my mind. Normally I groan at a big time skip, but we've gotten to know these characters so well and they've been so consistent that you don't need to see the entirety of their arc to understand how they ended up here - of course they did. It's like everything beforehand was just prologue or table-setting and now we're watching a different, better show. I can't wait to see where it goes.

The population counter going up at birth means Gurren Lagann is pro choice and holds up.

Wiger will know what I'm talking about, but I can't get over how much older Rossiu looks like Fei Fong Wong from Xenogears.

A fun little meta-commentary inside the show is the introduction of the “advanced/sophisticated” mecha used by Gimmy and Darry. In our world the colorful Super Mecha anime of the 70s and 80s were eventually supplanted by more grounded/realistic shows like Gundam and Evangelion. Inside the Gurren Lagann universe the fun huge face mechs have been put in the garage and the world is now overseen by mass produced assembly line robots.

Question for Heather: why is it row?

Supermegadeathpunch

I 2nd the To Be Hero X recommendation. It has the fastest pacing I have ever experienced in any show. Basically a full Spiderman movie's worth of exposition and action crammed into 24 minutes.

Alexander Acosta

I don't know if you guys need to see the movies but I will say the final battle in the movie is like 10x better than the one in the show, which is saying something because the final fight in the show rips.

Darth Maul’s tainted Tit’s

After years of me putting off this show I’m so glad I finally got around to watching it, and so far all I gotta say is. absolute CINEMA ✋😔🤚

“Hi, I’m Slacious B Crumb, and welcome to is Java-Ass” - right before his tooth is ripped out by a string tied to a land speeder

Andrew Mcilwraith

Haven't listened to the episode yet, but heard about a good baseball anime for Matt; "Ace of Diamond" streaming on Crunchyroll. Happy weebing!!

Deacon Raid

If we’re talking movies that are anime, I think Pacific Rim is pretty high up there. They got Rei Ayanami’s voice actor in it to dub an actress who can already speak Japanese.

I’m a 5am guy. I do a lot of good gaming early morning.

A good golf term for the birdie wing situation is mulligan! If you try to keep watching it, you guys will be taking a mulligan on the show. Also, Horimiya hooked me, and I binged the show in a couple of days after watching the pilot along with the podcast

Jack Byrne

Salacious B Crumb will always be sophisticated in my mind. I'm always delighted when the pod gets hijacked with Star Wars talk.

LagerB

Wow, almost went a whole episode without a Star Wars rant. Good save by Jack Burn.

RTSNoDak

Same on Horimiya. Animayhem got me again, can't wait till next year.

I've been struggling to motivate myself to watch Gurren Lagann even though I love it, and episode 18 + the animayhem reprieve helped me realize why. It makes my brain work. Sometimes I just wanna watch golf balls blast through trains or maids blast each other away. But man 18... the scene where all the old guard are answering the phones? One banger quote about societies after another. People are more attached to their damaged property than they are concerned about an existential threat about to wipe out all human life. Our two strongboi twins smashing their phones into the desk, proving that the personal assets it takes to get you into power don't necessarily translate to wielding it. Just that one scene made me pause the episode 4 times to write out my thoughts.

I’ve started watching Akiba Maid War and the opening theme of “Cute maid stuff over fight music from the Matrix” absolutely rules
