Thrilled to get a Tartan Asia Extreme mention in here!

Ranch's experience with My Chemical Romance and Audition is similar to one I had with Panic! at the Disco and the Chuck Palahniuk book "Invisible Monsters" which I tried to read at like 14 and just couldn't stomach.

Has anyone checked out Yaiba Samurai Legend on Netflix? It's adapted from a late 80s manga so it's very dragon ball coded but with fantastic Wit Studio animation. It's funny, fast paced, the action is super fun and dynamic and the number of Little Guys on this show is off the chart. The story follows Yaiba (a feral child samurai) as he makes new friends and journeys to become strong enough to defeat Onimaru (a middle schooler that Yaiba antagonized into becoming a Demon Lord)

I read once that if you know you did something unforgivable, your three options moving forward are to either kill yourself, curdle in despair, or resolve to move forward and ensure it never happens again. I love that this show acknowledges that Rossiu did something heinous, but that he still deserves the chance to live and become better. (And now that I think of it, Lordgenome/the Anti-Spiral demonstrates what happens when you let despair turn into a nihilistic weapon)

[1980s Stephen King high on cocaine writing another novel about a malevolent entity inside your head that is responsible for your success but is also killing you]: I know writers who use subtext, and they’re all cowards.

https://youtu.be/CTAvBQrW8zc?si=xLibLOaKgBbv7X3S Wanted to share this with you all, this was my introduction to this Anime. It talks about spiritual symbolism in this show and how it can be read as a metaphor for humanity awakening to a greater reality. I watched this video and then went and watched the entire series and really loved it. Glad you all covered it and it’s been fun getting reacquainted with Gurren Lagann.

As Evangeliony as the show has been so far in reference, I feel like the the character deaths in ep 24 were very Gundam coded. And a literal wave of despair?! Let's go Simon!

The number of years for the time jump seemed very weird to me until I realized 7 years is yet another biblical reference, ie the 7 years of feast and then famine in Egypt.

Pen talk reminded me of a Mitch Hedberg joke "I got an expensive pen cus I always lose pens and I was sick of it not bothering me." I'd 100% lose my $250 pen and be mad about it for days

Zeon Liberation

Unrelated to anything. I just leaned about Hideaki Anno’s live action film “Love & Pop”. It’s an experimental film shot in first person/found footage style. It’s about the lives of high school girls and the paid dating phenomenon in Japan.

For anyone interested in some more JHorror: Sweet Home and Pulse are both directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Occult and Cult directed by Koji Shirasai who has a similar hit/miss ratio to Takeshi Miike, Parasite Eve by Masayuki Ochiai based on the original novel, and my personal favorite right now Saiko! The Large family which can be found on YouTube.

Grant Prusi

Yes, Audition is intense, but nothing has made me feel as dead inside as the South Korean film, “I Saw the Devil.” Fun fact, immediately following that movie, I was introduced to the Comedy Bang! Bang! tv show to lighten the mood. That was the start of an L.A. comedy road that eventually led me to this show.

Yes Matt, PLEASE watch Kiki's Delivery Service! I literally changed my outlook on what children's movies could be after watching it with my daughters a couple years ago. It opened a whole new world into Studio Ghibli and just a different way of looking at the world. There are no "bad guys", all the women and characters Kiki runs into during her journey i kept waiting to see which would be the "vilian" after a lifetime taught by Disney and Western media. Just a great story of a young witch on a journey of growing up, and all the people she meets along the way just help in that journey.

Love hearing any talk about my favorite director, Takashi Miike. Of the 25 movies I’ve seen, I would only consider 3 as truly bad. Many are just insane and fun. He’s done some interesting video game adaptations (ace attorney, like a dragon (based on yakuza 1)) that would be interesting to hear talked about on the podcast, as well as a lot based on manga (As The Gods Will, Terra Formars, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable - chapter 1). If you want to watch a truly wild and weird movie, I cannot recommend yakuza apocalypse enough. I’d also point to Sukiyaki Western Django, which is fully in English and has Quentin Tarantino playing a weird old man. Every movie he does is, at the very least, really interesting.

Talking about the weird moment with Rossiu and Kinon, not sure what the sub says but in the dub Rossiu says it’s good because he wants to “feel what the weight of a single human life is like.” Which isn’t any less weird than what y’all described, but I thought it was interesting!

Kevin Nix

Simon's "let's see you grit those teeth" to Rossiu is my single most favorite moment in all of anime. Ripping a hole thru space-time to stop bro from committing suicide? I vibe so hard with it, it's so powerful and is an incredible callback to the beginning of the series. For me it just sums up everything this show is about and still gives me goosebumbs

On the subject of Pokemon and language, the Unown types all represent the Latin alphabet, so based on very little at all I am confidently stating that Pokemon speech is based on Latin and Pokemon are not making natural sounds but are stating their names in Latin. Regarding Meowth, I believe an early episode states that he learned human speech (English) but due to his less-developed brain he forgot Pokemon speech (Latin) because he didn't have enough memory to remember both languages at once.

Adam Curtis

The canonical reason Meowth can speak English is that he went to Hollywood (yes literally American Hollywood) and saw a female Meowth he saw was hot as shit so he forced himself to learn human language as to impress her; the female Meowth could care less about human language and so with no other options the Meowth we know turned to a life of crime. If you think that's weird try explaining it to a 4 year old.

I'm devastated that the big dumb guys didn't make it. Their law careers were just getting off the ground...

We have a few animals in English named after the sounds they make. It’s mostly birds or bugs like cuckoos and katydids. There’s one called the grey go-away bird, which feels like a stretch if you listen to the audio clip on Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grey_go-away-bird

I have no tattoos and there is 1 I've wanted as my 1st tattoo. It's the serpent cross on alphonse's armor in FMA. After watching this show I want a 2nd and that's the skull logo. Any anime tattoos you want or have? What hentai is the tiger from Nick?

Ted Kord

Am I the only one that just cannot stand Artenborough? That clown-looking loser has serious impulse control problems, why do they keep putting him in charge of firing the weapons?

Spudowski

Wiger: "I'd tie up Team Rocket and make them watch me eat Meowth" Might be time to take a break from the japanese horror buddy

Alex Chosid

I watched these episodes on an airplane and once Yoko’s new outfit was introduced I because even more self conscious about being seen watching what appears to be a show about robots and boobs. Not that there’s anything wrong with that!

Patrick M.

I forget if this was mentioned, but there are moments in episode 24 where people are piloting mechs, which are piloting even bigger mechs!

Zach Folkman

Imagine you're going about your day and your entire galaxy is annihilated in an instant because it got used like a frisbee in a giant robot fight
