Heather, Nick and Matt discuss the final episodes of Gurren Lagann!

I was out of my seat cheering for Boota when he energises with spiral power to save Super Galaxy Di-Gurren from the sea of Dispair! I love the extended shot of Boota in front of Virals junk in the next scene, and I couldn't believe we even ended up with a Boota beastman scene. This show really is the hype! Thank you all for the wild ride.

Honestly surprised to see so much praise for a boring show. Simon in particular is consistently boring. Personally, as an excavation enthusiast I love boring content and it's great to see so many people excited about earth moving.

What a finale. The sequence from the moment the opening theme starts playing to the Lagann Impact might be the most inspiring moment of television of all time. I will sometimes just put it on when I need to get amped up. I want to throw out two anime recommendations. Either for the gang or just for listeners looking for something to watch. "Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!" is a slice of life/comedy anime about 3 high school girls learning to make anime. It's a delightful love letter to the medium and it's a joy to watch characters discover and pursue their passion. Completely opposite is "Dororo". A new adaptation of a 1969 anime which itself is adapted from a manga by the grandfather of manga himself, Osamu Tezuka. It's about a young ronin in the 15th century who, at birth, had his arms, legs, eyes, skin, and several other body parts traded to demons when he was an infant. Despite that he survives and hunts demons so he can regain what was stolen. Just watch the OP on YouTube and you'll be sold. Love the podcast, can't wait to see what you watch next.

One night when I was a teenager I was channel surfing late one night and came upon a crazy anime that featured robots, space ships and a lot of rainbow lights and explosions. I always wondered what it was because even though I had no clue what was happening, it seemed amazing. As I was watching these final episodes I realised it was this. So thanks to you guys for closing the loop on this little 15 year old sidequest. This was one of the best things I've ever watched.

SoZettaSlow

Last year I read Uzumaki and the moral was "Spiral Bad". Then I watched Gurren Lagann and the moral was "Spiral Good". I have to know, which one's right?? Is spiral bad or good???

Rory McDaid

I’d recommend the Gurren Lagann Parallel Works for anyone that hasn’t seen them. They’re these small collections of anime shorts that Gainax did set to songs from the OST. Most are just fine - fun alternate universe depictions of our cast, reimagining them in different worlds and so on. But #8 from the first batch is pretty great, and shows Lord Genome’s war against the anti-spirals set to the Libera Me From Hell song. https://youtu.be/RvuK5KyWBGg?si=0ceEmHmIe5vWP1d3

was right there with Heather’s overall feelings. the show was extremely important to me when i watched it in 2011, it was one of the shows that got me into anime as a medium and single-handedly saved my mental health during a rough period. for years it was my favorite show of all time. and i did still have a ton of fun with this watch but it wouldn’t even make my top 10 now, maybe it’d hit top 20 for nostalgia’s sake. part of that is definitely what Heather mentioned about it being so influential, but i also think i’ve developed my taste more and i’m not sure i’m really a mecha person! i’ve had this feeling for a while but this watch really solidified it. i enjoy mech shows when there’s something else in there to grab me, but a big robot doesn’t do anywhere near as much for me as a guy in a cool suit, even if the suit is mecha-sized like Ultraman

Sexy Grandma's Retirement Home

In order to bring the two podcasts together, I give you Spiral Effect. Some mad genius took footage from Gurren Lagann and put it to the audio from a Mass Effect 2 trailer. It's amazing and gives me goosebumps damn near every time I watch it. The fact that it features my favorite song, "Heart of Courage," by one of my favorite bands, Two Steps From Hell, probably helps. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NoILKP59XMc

Zack Tennenhouse

The part where Boota became a man felt exactly the same as watching random Digimon episodes out of sequence as a kid.

john Smith

Now that you have finished the show, I want to share this fan-made music video to the black parade that someone made back in the 2000s, and I rewatch it maybe 3 times a year and hypes me up so damn much. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xNnPmnkNzg

I usually don’t watch along with the shows, but this might be the first time where I truly could not follow anything that was happening. So kudos to y’all for making everything else coherent.

Rational Knife

I do like the trope of heroes being caught in an illusion and need to escape. Out of everyone, Virile’s world where he gets to have a family hits me so much different now that I am older and have a family of my own. So my question is if the anti spiral trapped you in an illusion or alternate world where you don’t want to leave, what would that world look like for you and also who is coming to snap you out of it like Kamina did for Simon. This person can be living or dead. For me that world is an endless clip show starting my family and all the milestones. My children hit. The person snapping me out of it is probably my dad as he is the only one who could convince me to put aside the illusion for the greater good.

William

This show starts with "all the lights in the Heavens are our enemies." and ends with "all the lights in the sky are stars where our cousins are waiting to meet us." The show is all about progress beating stagnation and my only concern with that is how nowadays technological progress is divorced from societal progress so that only rich people seem to benefit from technology. Do you think the message of this show holds up in the "go fast and break things" era of technology?

Ben Walkup

To be clear about the scale of this show, by the end, Super Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is throwing UNIVERSES, not galaxies I'm convinced the only reason Gainax didn't go bigger is because they hit the limit of what most people could imagine at the time

Joe Siemsen

I avoided this show for so long. Partially because I wasn't a big robot guy. But mostly because I had a classmate in college who was obsessed and whose entire personality was this show. GET ANIMED broke through that and now I'm even more mad at that guy for giving me such a poor initial impression and preventing me from watching this for this long.

Jules Twitchell

I have been watching a lot of shorter anime shows and have a few recs: Yuri on ice (gay ice skating anime that is pretty popular and fun), my dress up darling (slightly horny show about a nerdy shy guy who can sew and a hot girl who wants to do cosplay), rock is a lady’s majesty (private school girls start a rock band).

Old Man Kate

This is likely a minority opinion but I thought the show was “extremely mid”, as the kids say. I was so happy when Kamina died because I didn’t have to watch “that screaming guy” anymore. The heightening is a cool gimmick and the show looks pretty good but I didn’t appreciate the frantic nature of the action.

Rachael

I am so grateful you watched this series. I think this was my fifth watch through and it still holds as my number one favorite anime of all time. ❤️ It feels like an extremely relevant piece of media to be consuming right now, especially with all the unspeakably terrible things happening in the US and throughout the world at the moment. This show gives me hope that humanity can and will drill through the heavens to a brighter and better tomorrow. Ro Ro, fight da power. ✊🏻

Popeye’s Forearms

I know Gunpla has been mentioned a few times on the show. There’s a store in El Monte called “Toy Arena” that sells Gunpla and other model kits. Gavin Higknight, the director of Requiem for Vengeance was there for an event and I got a Red Wolf and a Gundam kit signed. There’s also Frank & Sons Collectible Show in Puente Hills that has Gunpla booths as well as vintage video games, art work, and other collectibles. You guys would love what’s there, check it out!

Matthew Siegel

To paraphrase GK Chesterton, we don’t watch anime to be told that malevolent forces are out there in the universe using despair and fear to suppress forward progress and keep people oppressed. We live in the world and know that already. We watch anime to be told that the power to overcome that despair is already in you, and that you absolutely can drill a hole in that malevolent force’s face and unleash an ocean of hope and power.

Zeon Liberation

There is a universal desire to find treasure. You know who loves finding treasure? Kids! You know what treasure is to them? Literally anything. It’s awesome. Everyone wants to find something unexpected and special.

Arthur Newman

Iv never been more excited to hear what Matt was going to do on his couch while reacting to a show. Thanks for covering this series.

Alexander Acosta

I watched Gurren Lagann the first time in my freshmen year of college during finals. I loved it so much that I would watch it every semester during finals just to remind myself to believe in the me that believes in me. Fast forward to the present almost a decade later I bought this Patreon to watch along with you guys and I was reminded how much I love this insane show. Matt, I'm with you I say 'believe in the me that believes in you" to friends and colleagues all the time!

Brave Baboon

I rewatch the entire series of Avatar the Last Airbender every summer. The voice acting and animation are incredible, and the heartfelt story and sincere character development makes it top tier. You guys would love it.

BlueWRXDriver

Hell yeah Matt, build those little mans! Would love to see you guys post in the Gunpla page on the discord!

Matthew Siegel

I am out of the loop, but genuinely curious: what are other recent anime that (1) aren’t based on pre-existing IP and (2) made to be a self contained/one season and done story? I know the Gurren Lagann writer and such went on to make Kill La Kill a few years later, but I didn’t know if there was anything else that had come out since then.

Alex Pitts

I just wanted to chime in and recommend you all watch Avatar the last air bender. It’s my personal favorite show and I think a near perfect story. As someone who doesn’t like to rewatch tv shows or movies I’ve watched this show three times through and I’m sure I’ll watch it again at some point. The character development, art, music, are all just 10 out of 10.

Coy_o_Coy

I’d love to use this show as a way to go back to Avatar! Second everyone else’s suggestions

Matthew Siegel

Since we can now post video essays with full spoilers I will heartily recommend this one on the works/artists that inspired TTGL. Comes with a capsule history of Gainax’s origins, a great reading list of things to get caught up on, and if you’re not in the headspace to absorb all the information it can function as two hours of cool anime visuals. https://youtu.be/9iYyjOXrhnU?si=EybsvwEkBzaPIOie

Vic

Yeah that rock lee fight is so good. My fav anime fight has to be the hisoka v gon rematch in the tournament tower arc.

David Mucci

I kinda hate the wedding bait-and-switch downer ending. After several episodes of an increasingly convoluted plot that still got through to me due to making emotional sense even if I wasn’t following the exact logic, Nia’s death does not make emotional sense to me, even if it’s consistent with the logic of the plot. What’s more, it makes her seem disposable and only there to serve Simon’s character growth. It didn’t ruin the show for me, but I can’t act like it didn’t sour it for me quite a bit.

Kyle Caulfield

I saw Heather was auctioning her Gundam PC and was very tempted to bid as I'm currently putting together a parts list for a new gaming build. Hope it found a good home!

jollytheoldsaint

I think Viral's dream was probably a nod to his voice actor, who's the voice of adult Link. Since his partner looks a lot like Zelda and he gives a very Link-ish grunt on his way out. The movies do ramp up the biggest climaxes of the show, but they're also mostly recap. So it may be best to give it a break and come back to them somewhere later down the line. They're still a blast though, definitely worth watching.

Mikey

Hiya Heather, Nick, and Matt! Thank you so much for covering this series I had such a moment rewatching it again. Like Matt it's my favorite show; I'm happy you all enjoyed and shared your thoughts (I love all your bits too). I often think about how the anti spiral and human extermination protocol are analogues for a malevolent force that alters brain chemistry so that humans inflict suffering upon others and themselves, downward "spiraling" if you will into a devolved state of individualism, stumping our growth. Like it can kind of explain the fermi paradox. Like COVID or the black plague, sometimes the truly scary thing instead of being huge is in fact merely molecule or even some kinda quantum waves

Grant Prusi

I’m so glad I rewatched this. Of all of the amazing things this show gives us, I’ll always remember it as the show that starts off with the protagonists wanting to get above ground, and ends with them dismissing entire planets being hurled at them as “pebbles.” Also, “Burn in the eternal hellfire of creation!”

Scott Jackson

Matt, congrats on finishing that Gundam model! I just finished my first too -- the Endless Waltz version of Death Scythe, my favorite model and pilot from the Gundam Wing series that I watched on Toonami as a kid. I know it makes me a stupid anime rube but my question, particularly for Heather, is where does the Gundam Wing series rank with the rest of the Gundam saga? I've never heard you guys mention it. It was the introductory series for so many Millennials and I know Zechs Marquise is no Char and much of the dramatic arc is underwhelming but I unabashedly love this stupid show and I want to know if I should hate myself or not for it...

Mathew Quitney

If you do a live action month, PLEASE watch Anno’s Cutie Honey

BlueWRXDriver

Just clicked that the Squirtle Squad leader glasses are the Kamina Gurren Lagann glasses.

Matthew Siegel

My pitch for the live action anime movie month is to do solely Hollywood attempts at doing anime. Admittedly you’d have to go through some rough stuff (Dragonball Evolution, whitewashed Ghost in the Shell, maybe that Netflix version of Death Note?) but they could end the month strong with legitimate masterpiece Speed Racer.

parenthesesONE

Im really happy to have found an awesome show to un-horrify spirals for me

Brainwascht

One of my favorite moment was in episode 22 when Leeron is like "man seven years ago I could barely read and now I'm in a space battleship"

Luke Lamar

Does Tengen Toppa mean anything? Or is it just as vibes based as Kamina naming Gurren Lagann? Overall a staggering work of genius

jollytheoldsaint

It literally means "piercing through heaven." Gurren is something like "crimson lotus" and Lagann is "enveloping face."

XRedGambit

I started this series a couple of times. First time I watched 3 or 4 episodes. I liked it but might have also started watching something else. Last year I started again after the pilot season. Got to episode 6 and put it on pause for a bit but still watched when i needed something else. When you started the series here I started watching again but this time I completed the series and loved most of it. I was thrown off of ep 4 animation (different but looked like it was for budget reasons) then ep 6 being a recap (thought budget again but did learn about the cut). I love the series so much I want a gurren lagann tattoo of the skull symbol.

Mauricio Diocis

Tears for different reasons in each of these episodes. Every time. Perfect show. Its been said before but the movie fight is somehow even more epic. Will Matt get a gurren lagann tattoo? Also wanted to add, that the creators said that they didn't know how this show was going to end when they started making it. Which is why the very start doesn't match with where the show ends. They retroactively said that it's an alternate universe, but still much like watchmen it is staggering for something so singularly unique and perfect to not be have thought out in full advance. Just another level of why this show is fully peak fiction.

Transfem Surge!

I heard you talking about the dragon ball movie in chain reactions. Just a short anecdote; in college, my roommate and I watched the dragon ball movie through an illegal upload on YouTube. It was uploaded into 11 parts iirc, and as we got to part six, parts one and two were already taken down, so we put it in 1.5x speed and finished this disaster. The film truly benefited from being displayed in the worst possible video quality one could imagine, on a laptop screen with indistinguishable dialogue. Two out of ten, where the two points are gifted because of our very funny assumptions for what the plot was.

Deacon Raid

Simon got that Final Fantasy X ending. Rossiu at the ending is roughly the same age as Nick currently. If Nick wants to see a wall of skulls, there's one at the Mooter museum of medicine in Philidelphia. A doctor collected dozens of skulls to discredit the theory of frenology which suggested that the shape of the skull determined personality and morals. It was a super racist theory. I found a drill for hot dogs that turns any piece of bread into a hot dog bun: https://www.gadgetsharp.com/portfolio/hotdogger-the-ultimate-hot-dog-bun-driller/

Manuel Briones

So next show is avatar the last airbender? You all would love it! There’s an animal big guy and a little guy in it so it’s cute and it is playful but the violence is based on martial arts so the “bending” is sort of grounded and yet they are throwing fire and boulders at each other. The storyline is impressive and an all time great arc for all the characters. The movie really did the show dirty 😬

Jaynor Diaz

I am very surprised this show is this beloved. I found it a drag to get through that I am now like 3 months behind the podcast. In fact, out of the three Gainax we watched I only truly loved Evangelion. The other two were not great. Hopefully, I find Birdie Wing fun
