Heather, Nick and Matt discuss episodes 1 - 3 of Birdie Wing: Golf Girls' Story.

When I saw the first episode of Birdie Wing, like Heather I thought “I don’t want to watch this show any more”. Unlike Heather, I was not committed to watching any more episodes of this show, so I didn’t.

I understand that just because Eve is a Heather Naruto coded character that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s for her. But I also hope she understands that sometimes it’s OK if a show isn’t all murder robots… She will probably disagree with that. Thank you for putting up with us and you can go back to murder robots next series. We love you.

KidKimura

Aoi is the Jimmy MacElroy and Eve is the Chazz Michael Michaels.

I bet if you visit an anime fandom con in a slightly less metropolitan city—say, Juneau for instance— it would have much more of the vibe that you wist for. I moved from Portland to Astoria, 4 years ago, and I am HARD up for good anime/manga conversion and recognition. I appreciate y’all more than ever <3 thank you!

okamiki

I love everything about this. I’m not watching the show I’m going to judge the whole show based off of your reactions. Your review of the pilot was paralleled.

Matthew Siegel

I understand the “new-old-new-old” scheduling impulse, but there’s literal decades of canonical capital G Great anime out there to cover that I’d be perfectly fine if the pod had a “Must be at least X years old rule” on what they focus on. I get the desire to not miss out on the current zeitgeist, but in practice it means you’re rolling the dice on the flavor of the week anime actually being good and not just mid.

Matthew Siegel

I’ve been enjoying hearing Ranch as the guest engineer on the Hollywood Handbook universe of podcasts, although I am afraid that after being around them so much she’s going to come back and immediately start bullying Nick.

Wiger would love apothecary diaries

Is this the series that breaks the show's perfect record of completing a season/series? The "first three episodes" rule of giving an anime a fair shake has been achieved and our fate is in your hands! First episode caught my attention but neither the golf "action" nor the characters are that interesting. If the podcast is watching than I'll watch, too, but I'd love an excuse to finally get around to Stand Alone Complex.

Console Canon

I was infuriated when I found out that you guys could be covering Ghost in the Shell: SAC instead!

Dabinsk

What has been the craziest setting for an anime or show you all have seen or heard of? My money goes to either “reborn as a vending machine, I now wander the dungeon,” an anime about a man who gets reborn as a magical Japanese vending machine, or “sekkou boys,” an anime about 4 inanimate Greco Roman bust sculptures that become an idol group.

Admarant

I hope they choose to pivot. They don't have to all like a show to complete the season but I hope they can find a show that they all at least feel could lead to enjoying the conversation. I also feel like if they pivot it would free them up to making wilder swings at animes to cover without feeling pressured to have to complete them.

LagerB

Never listen to the fans

Zack Tennenhouse

I personally love too-serious sports anime that is transparently at least a little dumb (Kuroko's Basketball is a masterpiece and I will die on that hill) but there's no shame in bouncing if you're not having a good time.

Grant Prusi

I know anime characters are almost always younger than you would assume but I was STUNNED when it said they were competing in the under 15 tournament. It’s not as egregious as Yoko being 14 in the first Gurren Lagann arc, but wow is it weird given the fan service angle, especially since it’s a relatively grounded show compared to GL.

MK

Nick's Ghost in the Shell reveal felt like it was Omaha Beach in Heather's head. Just her looking around confused, a high pitched ringing and Matt stumbling away with one arm blown off.

Michael Pemulis

With all this pivot talk, have you considered covering the current WNBA season? We're coming up on the all-star break, so you could jump into the second half of the season. And, just randomly, you might focus your coverage on one team-- the Lynx, maybe. Something to think about, you know, to keep me happy, specifically, one of your most important benefactors.

beatnikbedlam

i feel kinda bad now because i was one of the people who commented enthusiastically about Birdie Wing after the Animayhem episode, because Matt said “comment and tell us why you recommended this” and everyone seemed utterly baffled by it. so i just wanted to share what i get out of the show. but i didn’t really think more episodes were going to change Heather’s mind, which is why i referenced JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure in the comment, another show with a similar tone that she’s mentioned disliking. i think most of us kind of assumed the next show would be Maid War with how much fun y’all were having with it. but! i will say, Heather’s intense frustration at having to watch this silly fluffy show is pretty hilarious so i at least hope you finish the season. i feel like i’m always on the other side of it, being baffled by everyone liking Edgerunners etc, so it’s fun to be on this side for once

Beef Steak Tomato

Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender is bafflingly godawful on every level, as an adaptation and as a $150m theatrical film. It’s okay if you don’t cover Avatar, it’s good but it’s not anime, but please god don’t do the movie as a compromise.

Ghost in the Shell: SAC has a lot of cool stuff is all I will say. Just lots of really cool adult characters doing really cool and philosophical things.

notthetoilet

I have watched the pilot three times at this point and I've still got no idea whether I enjoyed it.

I'm not a fan of golf, but I'm also not immune to the hype power of a sports anime, apparently. Makes me wonder what the weirdest sports anime is

Coy_o_Coy

Straying not-to-far-away in the podcast universe, this reminds me of when Adam Scott and Scott Aukerman started covering Red Hot Chili Peppers, who they and many of their fans love. A few episodes in, they just weren’t that into it! Instead, they kept referencing Talking Heads. Mid-ep, they pivoted the entire show over to become a Talking Heads podcast and seemed much happier for it. I think part of the experience of being an anime fan is trying things out, sometimes multiple times, but accepting when you just bounce off something

Coy_o_Coy

A very short sports anime that might be a good pivot: Ping Pong. Nothing has ever made ping pong seem so fucking cool. I haven’t finished it yet, but it’s draw in such a unique, maybe deliberately ugly way - it reminds me of Ed, Ed, and Eddy - but with beautiful, resonate themes echoing evangelion’s exploration of intimacy, loneliness, and purpose for young people finding their identity

Rory McDaid

Stand Alone Complex is one of my favourite shows and have long hoped we’d get coverage here. Like Heather, Nick’s betrayal rocked me. We’re spending time with this nonsense when an excellent show is just sitting right there? Also adore Chihayafuru and would love more chatting on that also as it’s such an excellent and beautiful series. I enjoyed birdie wing enough as an Animayhem thing to listen to the episode of, though didn’t watch it myself, and won’t be watching along as it’s just not my thing. I’ll listen to the show and enjoy it regardless of what you guys cover though, gotta maintain that parasocial fix!

Zeon Liberation

I’ve had a similar experience to Heather while attending cons. But I have found that smaller cons still have a fan first approach and the main halls are still rows and rows of shops. Just need to get out of LA or NY to find them.

XRedGambit

So I recently got married and my wife hasn't had to watch anime with me yet for the show. This is the first anime I've made her watch and she hates it. Please do a good show next so she gets interested in it. Also she thinks the theme song says penis slime and sings it with the theme.

DubiousDank

I think a pivot from this show would be great. Its quite boring. Maybe gets better but probably not.

Dean Lowdon Clear

I’m finding this show decent rather than great, but am I the only one who would rather watch this than either DandaDan or Gurren Lagann? I just found both those shows boring despite all the crazy stuff going on, and this is from someone who would put both Chainsaw Man and Solo Levelling amongst their favourite anime series.

Dean Lowdon Clear

So far it’s been a pleasant enough watch, but I’d also be surprised if it ever goes anywhere really interesting.

RTSNoDak

Hey Matt, tangential weebing but have you ever watched Kasso? Its the skateboarding version of Sasuke (Ninja Warrior) made by the same guys and put out on TV Tokyo. They've put all the past episodes on their YouTube for free. https://www.youtube.com/@kasso_0318

Michael Pemulis

As a rule, I don't give advice to, or make demands of, artists and creators, but, I have to say, don't listen to the listeners.

Deacon Raid

The last convention I went to had an army recruiter dressed like Captain America. So yeah.

Wil Harris

OMG PLEASE PIVOT TO SAC! How is that a choice. GITS is a core text. Do it!

BensDecoy

In general I think the show should do what makes Heather happy. IMO the pod works if everyone likes an anime, like Eva, and it works if everyone generally struggles with one, like Violet Evergarden, but it doesn’t work when one or two people don’t like the anime. If I don’t like the anime, like Haruhi, I can just skip the podcast for a while but wanting to watch Birdie Wing and the pod not being into would be a bummer.

Andrew

Can’t wait to hear the gang talk about SAC Been meaning to rewatch it myself but haven’t yet, now I’m a little worried about what context it will take after first watching it like… a long time ago
