I'm usually pretty prepared for alot of wild stuff that anime can throw at me but I was not prepared for that Scooby-doo ass villain Vipère.

GirthControl

Bring backs sneaking in the baby elephant walk song intros.

"My life is shit, I hated waking up in the morning...now I can't wait for tomorrow" being a quote from this golf anime has the same energy as that Steve Buscemi "Do you think God stays in heaven for fear of what he's created?" quote from Spy Kids 2.

Big Chunk of the fanbase

Eve hitting blue bullets at the end of the episode, so is this porn intro show leaving the viewer with blue balls?

Michael Pemulis

Episode recap: Nick, on date night, at the bowling alley, with his optometrist wife cheering him on, as he stands in front of the ball return, pants around his ankles, Birdie Wing tee shirt blowing in the breeze from the hand dryer, while Matt yells More like, hole in three, am I right, and Heather and Richelle, horrified, discuss the logistics of a murder suicide. (I'm writing flash fiction, now.)

Eddarrd88

Hey, I can't watch this show because it is not groovy enough. Can you please do a watch along with Heather of either the 1st, or all of the Austin Power Movies? I think we can either 1) make her realize how funny they are, or B) break her brain. Either way, should make some great content! also K-Pop Demon Hunters is Frickin amazing!

2026-09-07 22:00 As far as weirdest sports anime, if you count fictional sports I think Keijo AKA Hip Whip Girl is pretty up there. From Wikipedia: “ It follows a gymnast participating in a fictional women-only contact sport, where players use only their breasts and buttocks to tackle opponents.” Of course it takes place on platforms floating and all the women are in swimsuits most of the time.

Nick saying the show pulls its punches is spot on. A big inspiration on the show is Pro Golfer Saru, the 70's manga by Fujiko Fujio A, which got an anime in 1985. That too involved underground golf gambling, but it gets far wilder with things like a baseball golfer who plays with a baseball bat instead of clubs, a Bruce Lee golfer whose clubs have chains like nunchucks, and a golfer who is a robot. The courses also push the limit in terms of high risk geography. Birdie Wing never reaches those heights of surreal golf action even if they tease it with direct references to Saru. Which ultimately meant while I liked watching it weekly, I didn't love it.

My reaction to episode 4 (fore!) of this show was basically Nick’s reaction deep into the Endless Eight: “what are we doing here?” I was not sure why I was supposed to care about exactly how or why someone is cheating at a rigged golf match, especially when the general premise of the show (measured, by-the-book golfer versus Happy Gilmore brute-force golfer) is decent enough. Also, I was truly icked out by the title character of that episode and it felt borderline morally depraved. One of the more frustrating viewing experiences I’ve had just a few episodes into a show that up to that point felt pleasant, if slight.

Zeon Liberation

I had seen Singing in the Rain countless times at home. I got to see it in a theater a few years ago. It was a completely different experience. I fell in love with that movie all over again. It was beautiful and moving in ways I hadn’t expected.

I would have never guessed that Heather would be the host to be disappointed that they weren’t watching porn.

Zeon Liberation

I knew of an underground dodgeball league. They would meet covertly in random parking garages. The location would be posted night of on facebook.

Deacon Raid

I met a client who was a pro golfer and he looked exactly like Hank Hill. He confided in me that he had let his anger get the best of him on the green.

Castle of Cagliostro is also one of my favourite Miyazaki’s. Really had to talk my wife into watching it recently as she thought it looked a bit naff but then she absolutely loved it. It’s such a well paced adventure/caper, still looks great for its age too. Nick, you might like some of the recent-ish Lupin seasons (Parts 4-6 are the modern ones, each set in a different European locale) and movies. they vary in quality but are lots of self contained stories - and then the darker “The Woman Called Fujiko Mine” spinoff anime which I recall quite liking for its animation style, and also remember it being quite a horny show. Lupin obviously a bit of a hot dog anyway but recall the spin off really leaning into it. I’ve never watched the original 1970’s anime that I know Miyazaki and Takahata took over at some point, leading naturally to them doing Cagliostro years later.

MurderDonut

I don't know if it's the weirdest, but most over-the-top "sports" anime has to be Food Wars. COOKING = COMBAT. It's also the horniest.

I told my friends I was watching this show for the podcast and after I described it a bit, one of my friends goes "You really watch whatever these guys tell you to huh". Lolol

“One Outs” is baseball and high stakes gambling combined. The ultimate gambler becomes a pro pitcher. A fun psychological show, somewhat grounded, in that there’s no supernatural or magical elements. But some characters do seem superhuman. The MC Tokuchi Toua reminds me of Hiruma Yoichi from Eyeshield 21, in terms of trolling the enemy team, and making me laugh

XRedGambit

I would like to point out that vampire viper lady didn't just unzip her unitard to her belly button, but very much past it to the mound area. I think the show was stating she uses her female "aroma" to throw golfers off. That just adds to Heather's porn theory.

Heather and Matt (and I guess Nick?)! I assembled my first gunpla after we watched the 8th MS Team and got my second during our viewing of Requiem for Vengeance. I just started my sixth HG Zaku (all different) and I think I may have a problem. Do y’all have any dream kits you’d love to put together?

how about "Birdie Wing: Blue Squawk"

I think the main thing that takes me out of it is that it’s an underground, mafia-run golf thing. Why not just make it a league thing? We’ve already bought into this world where only Japan is Real and there are battle anime attacks. So, why bring in the criminal underworld into it when it just wants to be a fluffy yuri-adjacent show? I get how the narrative justifies that aspect, but I feel like it’s got a foot in/foot out to its detriment. It should either have been “I knock your head off with my golf ball” or just been something like Basquash.

toffuti_today

Not only is this show's OP "Venus line" a banger, but Birdie Wing's "main theme" is an absolute tee-time shred fest. Also, just wanted to give a shout out to the show Yatagarasu: a crow does not choose it's master. Its a similar setting to apothecary diaries but with bird people and is quietly fucking wild.

Ray Criminal

I commented on an old post like an absolute bozo but I’ll say it again, I’d super love to hear some gintama review, it’s a comedy anime and manga, has a bunch of episodes but they have arcs that have made me cry and laugh and have a great time with the absolute freaks that populate the universe, a favorite bit of mine is where they will just come out and tell you “the anime funding isn’t good and we are overworked” it’s so good and if I need to point out an arc to just jump to I’m so down to recommend something relatively standalone

Rin Manzano

I love Birdie Wing’s intro Penis Slime

Scott Jackson

Based on what Matt was saying during Chain reactions about how shows with shorter runs sometimes work better for the podcast format, I feel like you should try Mushishi. It's this gorgeous, contemplative show that blends folklore, nature, and the supernatural into episodic stories that feels more like literature than anime. It's definitely one of those shows that stays with you.

I want to go to there! Imagine living in a world where the worst thing nefarious people do with their obscene amounts of money, is find a way to build a secret randomized golf course. You know, overt sexualization of a 15 year old aside. Which, let’s face it, we’re already having to deal with from OUR nefarious rich people…um, “allegedly.” 🙄 P.S. I did NOT Epstein myself, if that is what gets reported in the news.

Peep_My_Meeps

Thank you guys for bringing another great show to my life, im really enjoying how silly this premise is. Also, if vipere were my opponent, i don't think I'd mind losing. (Also to help yall with the pronunciation, the 2nd syllable of her name is pronounced like "pair")

Nick had a tangent about if an animated tattoo could be a thing in the future and it knocked loose a memory I have of reading an article about a person wanting to develop a method of ‘stitching’ fiber optic material into a person’s skin and then have a means by which to send images to it. It would be like an embroidery machine, pumping funky fiber into your skin and then you could choose whatever image you wanted on it, or… play DOOM. ( this was even years ago, before wireless charging existed, so that would solve one issue, but how do you not get the absolute worst infection from it?)
