In the way, that hot topic has become Disney after dark Halloween as a personality people are just Disney adults after dark.

I’d like to recommend to Movie Man FKA Clear Plastic Human the movie I was going to recommend to Nick anyway based on his watch of Daimajin: the 1954 film Sansho the Bailiff by Kenji Mizoguchi. A beautiful, tragic story set in 11th-century Japan — from Nick’s description of Daimajin (which I haven’t seen), Sansho seems like that without the kaiju stuff. While you’re at it, go for Mizoguchi’s Ugetsu as well, a Japanese folkloric ghost story. I’d also recommend Woman in the Dunes, which I would describe as a 2.5 hour Japanese Twilight Zone episode. And Tampopo, a movie about a ramen shop, is maybe the best food movie of all time. Man I just want to watch movies all day 😭

On the one hand I really don’t like the energy of the podcast when the group isn’t more or less unified on their opinion of a show, either all positive (Eva) or all generally negative (Violet Evergarden.) On the other hand it does mean they spend more time talking about other things like Austin Powers or industry stories or food sooooo kind of a trade off.

Doc Robot

This show starts with Tokyo-3 geofront death golf with a snake lady and a cyborg and heightens to mini golf with high school club golfers with curfews. Did the boss come in and yell at the production staff to make it normal?

LagerB

Holy shit, I had no idea ‘hide distracting items’ was an option on my phone. Thank you for the tech tips!

Zack Tennenhouse

This show started off absolutely insane, and I've been so excited to see how it heightens, but they kind of just keep playing golf. I wonder what's going to happen next week?

Zeon Liberation

Holy shit! Big Man Japan. I have not thought about that movie in a long time.it should be on everyone’s watch list. As an aside. Archive.org is a great way to find movies that are not currently streaming anywhere.

I was a Cub Scout camp counsellor when I was a teen and I convinced a bunch of eight year olds that “Old Man Pace” from those Pace Picante Sauce commercials was a legitimate part of American folklore alongside Paul Bunyan and John Henry.

Recommendation primarily for Nick: Blue Box. It’s a sports/romance manga all about hard work vs talent. If I had watched the anime adaptation first, it might not have taken me 180 chapters to realize that the title refers to the color of the school gym.

If they somehow watch this show to the end, Heather is gonna be real mad about the ending. Haha

Dr. Pepper (for mama)

I love you all. But I need to defend this show. I’ve stood all I can stand, and I can’t stands no more… There are absolutely dents in mini golf greens. Assholes smash the ground with their clubs and permanently mess them up. Two players who attend the same high pressure golf academy would for sure take a mini golf competition WAY too seriously. The different visualization powers for the individual players are awesome! 48” is legit crazy. About 2-3” longer than standard. It would be very difficult to control. It’s a risky strategy. I love it! I like the mildly horny tone. If it was “Prison School horny,” I think it would be too much. Matt’s Albertsons story brought me joy. “Anything for you bonito.”

Before I listen to the Podcast, I just wanted to share something with the hosts. Las weekend I went to Otakon and was able to attend a panel with Katsuyuki Konishi, aka the voice of Kamina from Gurren Lagaan! And pleased to say in addition to Kamina still being one of his favorite characters he's performed he did say the line, "Believe in the me that believes in you" is still one of his favorite lines. He also showed a PV of a new series he'll star in, Tojima Wants to be a Kamen Rider. (put it on my instagram for those interested https://www.instagram.com/p/DNT-k4EB4O3/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA=)

Let's gooo!!!! Matt, so glad you like Kasso and stoked to hear Heather and Nick had good things to say about it too! Also, agreed with the take that Kasso is doing in real life what Birdie Wing is trying to do in anime. I guess the only difference being nobody is trying to pitch me a "will they won't they" between Jamie Foy and Ren Suematsu which... idk... maybe that makes it better, who can say.

I have a non Anime recommendation for Heather because I think I remember her mentioning loving the Pizza Hut standalone buildings and collecting things from them? If I’m not misremembering that then there is a documentary I want to recommend called Slice of Life: The American Dream In Former Pizza Huts. I saw this at the Chicago Film Festival last year and noticed that it has now been made available to rent on Amazon. It’s a documentary about the Pizza Hut building and the history of the design of that building. It’s also about the new businesses that have opened in the closed down pizza huts around the country and what different people have done with what is essentially the same building. It’s kind of fun to see a high scale dining restaurant, a church, a weed store, and random other places inside the obvious bones of a Pizza Hut building.

Re: Castlevania—There are only two Castlevania shows right now. The original (4 seasons/32 eps total, finished) and Nocturne, a sequel though not a direct one. Definitely recommend finishing the OG series first as it kicks so much ass, but you won’t be lost if you start with Nocturne.

The talk about Kaiju movies and the practical effects of making them reminded me of an idea I had years ago. In the film (or more likely, a sketch) kaiju are revealed to be real, but nobody watching the footage believes it because real life kaiju just look like men in rubber suits.

On the topic of foreign film recommendations, I gotta mention Kim Jee-Woon, Particularly: A Tale of Two Sisters - a psychological horror / family drama about sisters concerned their step-mother is out to get them. The Age of Shadows - a period action thriller about the loyalties of a Korean officer serving the occupying Japanese forces. I Saw The Devil - an extremely dark revenge story a friend of mine described as “the best movie I’ll never watch again.” Also “Kill,” an extremely bloody Indian action movie about an army commando taking on a large gang of train robbers.

I’ve purchase King’s Hawaiian burger buns at Costco in the past, but have not seen them recently. They are incredibly tasty! I will be on the look out for their hot dog buns, thanks for the recommendation.

Rachael

"They built it up like these two ladies are going to scissor on the green." 😂

beatnikbedlam

it’s been really great hearing Nick get into more into tokusatsu! i’ll always recommend Ultraman for more fun kaiju stuff, but i also just watched a neat little movie called Mechanical Violator Hakaider that’s kind of a combination of Terminator, Escape From New York, and Akira’s bike sequences. very little plot, just 77 minutes of great music and cool shit happening. it’s a great intro the the non-kaiju side of toku!

Phillip Medoc

I still have no idea why you guys allowed a single Discord user to bully you into watching this stupid show. We could be watching Utena or Nadia or even Sailor Moon but no, let's watch the Golan & Globus/Canon of anime. Can we at least get Nick on a solo episode talking about Ninja Scroll, since he bought the blu-ray?

Linux

I just got out of a showing for the 4k re-release of Shin Godzilla! What a fucking movie to see on the big screen! Every single time the ‘Decisive Battle’ theme from Evangelion was used (and it comes up a lot) I caught both myself and the person sitting a couple seats away from me tapping along with the drum beats. Shoutout to Hideaki Anno-san for discovering the best musical beat to signal determination and using it in a project 30 years later.

XRedGambit

I'm surprised that no one called out the Gundam reference in the episodes. Not only a Gundam reference but Heather's boy Char. It was in 11 I think taking about custom clubs and said something like Char's custom model.

Kyle Murray

Ok, I feel crazy at this point. I don't think this is a spoiler, because I'm at the same point you guys are, but how has nobody pointed out that there is only one other blond lady with what seem to be blue eyes and its Aoi's mother? Are Aoi and Eve actually half-sisters?

Tmacc

Guys. My friends are still making fun of me for watching the "bad yuri-bait golf show that those podcasters told me to watch" (their words not mine), please send help...

Arthur Newman

For Christmas I hope they watch the first Austin powers

Ray Criminal

Akane banashi is so cool! If you haven’t looked into it there’s some videos on YouTube of live performances of rakugo, it’s so awesome seeing the stories in the manga brought more to life, it’s astounding I haven’t seen anything about it before, cool art!

Alex Chosid

Also: Coach Reina Amuro is voiced by Amuro Ray’s VA and Char’s VA voices Leo, Eve’s original golf teacher.

Olivia

Love the pod and I kept listening every episode, but I could not watch along with this show past the 2nd episode
