I watched chainsaw man season 1 over the course of the past two days and my only complaint with the show is that Himeno dies! God damn it she was so hot and cool... minus the barf haha. I was in disbelief how everything went to shit so suddenly which means they did a great job!

Great Ep... Of the Anime. Still listening to the Pod

Definitely my favorite episode so far. The biggest case of “Kill your darlings” I’ve seen in a while. All the extra bits with Himeno made what happened hit so much harder in the anime than in the manga! I’m a big fan of Tokusatsu (Ultraman/ Kamen Rider/ Power Rangers) and see a bit similarities between those shows and Chainsaw Man, than other anime. I wonder if Fujimoto is intentionally made it this way?

Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo... I just don't know what to say about this anime. I've read the comic and I love it, but the anime (and this may be Recency Bias... but still) it's like nothing I have seen before. I watch so much fucking anime, and have consumed everything even anime-adjacent that I could get my hands on, since I saw Akira on Laser disc, in my ten-year-older cousin's basement-room, when I was ten. But this... Outside of paranoia agent, I have never seen any anime TV show that threw me for such a fucking loop every episode; that it feels like a tonally different anime every episode, and sometimes minute to minute, AND it has this insane production value every moment, AND it still has incredible character development, AND it makes me Convulse with laughter while watching alone on my headphones, and this episode, even though I KNEW WHAT WAS GONNA FUCKING HAPPEN, this shit had me audibly gasping with shock and welling up with genuine tears all in the course of twenty-four UN-missable minutes. Y'all said it right... this episode is a masterpiece... this fucking show is a masterpiece... I've never felt so strongly about a show in eight episodes. Holy fucking shit, y'all... I feel like I should just leave my family and move to the desert, never seeing my three kids or wife again, or I should convince my wife and 3 kids to assist me in ritualistic Seppuku, as nothing I ever do will even come close to the majesty of this show. Dark turn, but what else does one do after this episode... wild shit. Thanks for the EXCELLENT pods, y'all are my favorites.

Not having read the manga before seeing this show, but having heard y’all talk about it extensively during previous episodes of the pod, I was excited to jump into Chainsaw Man, and I really liked the first episode. After that, I was kind of hot and cold on it a little bit, as I struggled with what seemed to be a juvenile tone — touching boobs, turds in the toilet, that kinda stuff. But I was feeling more positive about it as it went on, and the “first kiss” was an audaciously brilliant comedy moment. But holy shit. I could not believe what was happening in this episode, and I could not believe how far it went. I thought “holy shit, Makima’s dead! What’s everyone going to do now?” And as soon as I processed that…everything else happened, and happened, and happened. I immediately bought the first four volumes of the manga.

Note on Aki's nail/spike - in Japanese culture, nails were used to place curses on people and there are other references in media to this. The animation for the move "Curse" in Pokemon stabs the afflicted pokemon with a nail, Nobara in Jujutsu Kaisen also uses nails on a straw doll to use her cursed ability. So not only is it really cool to see Aki fight with a giant nail, but it's actually deliberate and plays in to his pact with the Curse Devil.

As someone who survived on Chupa Chups as a child, the way y’all pronounce it has rocked my world. Great episode 🫶

Thraxis

Holy shit honestly I think I’m going to wait to listen until I’ve seen what comes next. I trust the pod not to spoil anything per-se, but knowing they’ve all read the manga could inform the way they discuss this episode and possibly lead to inferences and I want to stay in this ignorant, “what the fuck just happened” zone as long as possible.

I am way in on this. I have recommended this to all my asd friends. So I truly believe that the premier anime podcast is excellent for the asd community

Some of these fucked up new devils make me nostalgic for the old devils we met early on. Bat Devil? I'd get brunch with Bat Devil. (RIP to a real one.)

I could listen to the gang say "Master Wayne, Michael Caine" all day

Shouts out to Matt who sacrificed himself and became a pile of clothes for the good of the 'pod while Nick went to the bathroom and Heather just didn't feel like helping. Rest in power, king.

Okay, I'm listening to this while I walk, and when Matt said, "Did he get drunk from the barf?" I had to stop because I was simultaneously gagging and laughing.

SqueezeGarvey

This episode was indeed a masterpiece, but aside from that HELL YEAH BROTHER SLAM DUNK RULES. I read it in Shonen jump when I was in middle school, thanks for bringing that bit of nostalgia up for me Nick.

Matt

Hey it’s me Matt again. Not Apodaca just to be clear. I wasn’t gunna comment on my own comment being read but than Nick said he would be interested to know how I feel about the show after seeing this episode. The short answer is, it rocks and they did handle the whole underage sex/drunk thing…well? lol it definitely subverted expectations with a swerve of Denji of all people doing the right thing and Himeno not really knowing what she was doing. I also want to say I can totally buy into the idea of “the sex has a point juxtaposed against the violence, or Power being on top of a shitty toilet when Denji feels her up so it’s supposed to be nasty not sexy, but ALSO, as soon as that episode aired, there was a statue already made and ready for preorder of Power seductively on the toilet with one of her breasts in hand and it’s the horniest thing ever, so the message is definitely a bit duplicitous when they market that stuff too.

Scott H [Hugizu on Discord]

Heather: Let's get right into this episode. Nick: First I want to talk about Slam Dunk, which is an anime about basketball, a sport that was invented in 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts, by Canadian physical education instructor James Naismith... 😆 (Y'all are the greatest!)

Not to be hyperbolic but Gunfire might be one of the best episodes of TV I’ve ever seen. Chainsaw man is shaping up to be an instant classic

Hi guys. I’d like to share some thoughts about the series that I’ve been kicking around for a bit. Right out of the gate I think its super refreshing to get such a wealth of small character moments in between all the typical shonen bombast. I havent seen much in the genre that is willing to spend so much of its runtime devoted to relatable human experiences, such as the time we spend with drunk Himeno last week or Aki’s morning routine. Just stuff that rings true to life. Another example being Denji’s fixation on sex. Who wasnt at 16? Or how easy it is for Makima to manipulate him as he literally has no life experiences to draw on. I think it’s in showing these smaller moments, without resorting to moralizing and letting us come to our own conclusions on these characters that really sets this show apart. Dont get me wrong I love the action stuff too but its great to see a show with something deeper going on! One last quick thing on continuing to watch with my daughter. This last ep devastated her. Its the first time she has come across fiction willing to kill main characters off with no regard. Im not a complete failure of a parent I’ll wait to show her game of thrones for another year or two!😂 Sorry for the rambling post, keep on weeb-ing!

You all talked previously about how good anime trains are (and I agree), so when Makima was riding one and talking about lunch this episode I settled in to enjoy the vibes of that moment. The way the gun slowly crept into the shot behind Makima froze me in my seat, and I stayed frozen until they got to the ramen shop. Incredible episode. Agree with Nick, sloppy drunk girl with an eye patch for the win. And Heather, I started watching Extraordinary Attorney Woo after you mentioned it a while ago (I think during Lycoris Recoil?) and it's so good, thank you!

Scott H [Hugizu on Discord]

As somebody reading the manga and watching the anime at the same time, I've found the best option is to watch the episodes and then read the manga roughly up to the point where the anime episode ends.

Matt B

As another Matt (also not Apodaca) I was thrilled to hear Matt say Denji got drunk from Himeno's puke. I thought the same thing and was hoping someone would bring it up.

Juan Sudarsky

This episode blew my mind. Having not read the manga (and not planning to) I have no idea where this is going. I did, however, notice a few things. Both Katana Man and Denji are neither men nor devils. I also noticed the hoodie girl had the same eyes as Makima (blink and you’ll miss it). I predict some reviving action all around. What do you guys think?

Sexy Grandma's Retirement Home

Heeeello everyone, and welcome back waifus! I'm Chad, self-proclaimed beer kiss, and episode 8 is the one that made me fall in love with Chainsaw Man. I've been enjoying the show thus far, but didn't really feel invested. Well now I'm fucking invested! I hope our boy Denji goes HAM on these two baddies in the next episode. He'll probably fail, but I want him to at least get a shot at them. I don't believe Makima actually died for a second. And we never actually saw anyone else get shot, so I'm guessing some of the secondary characters survived. Kobeni in particular, because she hasn't shown off her contract yet and it was hinted at being powerful when they were in the hotel. We need to at least get a reveal of that before she kicks the bucket.

Meagan LeMay

I love this series so goddamn much. It’s so freaking ORIGINAL. If this series were an improv show, the style would be “no, but…” Fujimoto isn’t afraid to keep you guessing every second. When reading the manga, I was shook by how cinematic it was and so impressed that I had no way to predict what was going to happen when I flipped the page. Would a main character have their brains blown out? (Yes) Would a giant spaghetti monster rip a hole in the fabric of space-time and spawn a tea party with Santa Claus? (Less likely, but still possible) Would the main characters actually fulfill the premise set up at the beginning of the arc? (Abso-fucking-lately not.) For all its twists and absurdity, Chainsaw Man is, at its heart, undeniably HUMAN. Characters act in ways that are unpredictable, chaotic, and unabashedly real. I think this is why the “fan service” doesn’t bother me because it’s not really fan service. Characters feel real and each have their own reasons, spoken or not, to do what that do. It’s not in service to the reader that they act, but to serve themselves and their goals. I could wax rhapsodic about this series for hours, but I won’t. I am so glad the anime is taking such care with the material. It feels like such a loving adaption of this unique series. Stoked to watch more!!!

Just caught up on all the Chainsaw Man episodes. Great stuff so far. Love the "Chainsaws VS arm" mini-debate.

Mark Lauman

Was the CG/hand drawn shot of Himeno approaching Denji in bed a reference to A Scanner Darkly? There's a very similar scene and shot of the main character approaching someone lying in bed and it felt like a very similar visual effect.

Jonathan Neumann

*Spoilers for anyone who hasn’t seen the film Under the Skin.* So I can’t help but think of the “human harvesting” sequence from Under The Skin when Himeno’s body vanishes one limb/part at a time. https://youtu.be/RCYpCaQXYzI The way her shirt sleeves are flailing in the wind reminded of how the skin moves in this horrific scene.
