Sonic Underground is a bit older than I am, but it’s been on Netflix for years. I found it as a wee lad and HOTDOG am I glad I’m not the only one who thinks it’s a certified bop.

Patrick M.

Talk about a Deus Ex Makima.

Seth Bullocks

wow! couldn't look away, eyes absolutely glued to the screen. a show hasn't captured my attention like this in a long time.

Better tell Ash to tell his Dad that when fighting a war in winter, Onix is a bit of a glass cannon, as it's rock moves are super Effective against Ice, but Onix itself is weak against Ice because of it's ground subtype. To Heather re: Spy Family - As a reader of the manga, I fell off the anime pretty quickly too, but have found since that it makes for great communal viewing, especially with friends who are open to anime but not regular viewers. Put some of my thoughts about the changes between the end of ep. 8 & the start of ep. 9 in a tiktok: https://bit.ly/3FaxPrS

I kinda regret watching this as it comes out because I got used to binge stuff. I can't handle cliffhangers anymore...

Here’s the thing, I’m a big queer, I like the dudes but after this episode I 100% simpfor Makima. She scares me and I like it. I understand Denji on a deeper level now 🫶

Cal

I would also like to put forth, a live action Evangelion with an all Japanese cast except for Gendo, who is played by Nicole Kidman. I think it would work.

As Nick said, Makima had the names of all the dudes that captured Denji, but also when the two operatives said they weren't going with her at the end, she says, "That's a shame, the dining in Tokyo is to die for" which in my opinion she said as a reference to our crew getting shellacked during lunch. That bitch is FULLY aware of what was going to happen.

Love a Sonic Underground discussion. I remember watching it as a kid here in the UK and its opening song has been stuck in my head for decades. I frequently rewatch that opening and, like the gang, love to show it to other people as it’s a joy to witness people being baffled by it.

TurboTurtle

I loved the episode, both the podcast and show, but what got me most excited was Matt mentioning reading the Norse mythology book by Neil Gaiman! I did the same thing after playing God of War (2018).

Sexy Grandma's Retirement Home

Just rewatched episodes 8 & 9 again, something I've never done with a currently airing show. To answer a couple questions posed in the podcast: At the end of episode 1, when Makima hugs Denji, his chainsaw parts melt away just like the katana parts of the bad guy in episode 9. In episode 8, the only people that bow down before the assassination on the train are the four people with guns. I assume they are getting them out of bags, pockets, etc. Everyone else seems horrified when the guns go off, so only the four were part of the plan. After Makima lies about not getting shot, the quick cut back to the train interior shows only the four gunmen dead, with big holes in their chests I might add. There's no visible evidence that Makima killed everyone that witnessed the shooting. You very briefly see Madoka in episode 8. He's with a coworker right before all the guns go off. When we see him in episode 9 he has blood on him, presumably from his encounter with that gunman. I haven't read the manga, so I'm just guessing with this one, but I think it's more likely that Makima has some other way of knowing the names of the bad guys. Maybe the crows are spies for her? Maybe she absorbed the memories of the dudes on the train she killed? She may have had a hunch something like this might happen, but I don't think she knew the exact way it would happen or who specifically would do it. Big old 🤷‍♂️ on this one.

MacheteOfOdin

My wife really likes Makima and wants to cosplay her. Should I be worried?

Jon Read

After watching I've figured out that the episode title - FROM KYOTO - should be read only in the voice of the NBA Jams announcer shouting FROM DOWNNNTOWNNN when you attempt a full court shot. Like Makima's power is just sinking threes from 300 miles away.

Will cline

I watched sonic underground but how the hell do i not remember that intro from childhood!!

OdinsDonuts

The only thing more powerful than the Gun Devil is Nick Wiger, the Spoiler Devil. Love the pod and Chainsaw Man. Keep up the great work!

MK

The gang is right on about Makima, she's like something out of a horror movie this episode. She's Dr. Moriarty and Carrie wrapped in icy stillness.

Ricardo Alanis

Nick: we did see Denji have the same melting off of his chainsaws/face in Ep 1 when he first meets Makima and he falls into her arms exhausted after killing all the zombies.

Brian Tidwell

The shrine scene was striking in the manga and they adapted it so well. Makima’s smile, the methodical can crushing gesture, the stillness at the shrine contrasted with the horror of the goons - it was perfect. Also shoutout to Akane’s, “A bullshit power like this is bound to be Makima” and telling Katana man “you can die in the van.” I’ll echo the appreciation for the patience of the show. Taking a minute to watch Makima tuck her shirt in gave you a nice breather before the rest of the horror show. There’s a real confidence to how they take their time with those moments. This show just rips so hard. What a pleasure to watch and listen to people discuss.

SqueezeGarvey

I just finished reading All You Need Is Kill last night, the manga was so friggin’ good. A few differences from the movie, but the pacing is amazing.

Kevin Ela

I’ve not read the manga but after the insanity of Makima’s storyline I fully expect that once they locate it her plan is to make a contract with the gun devil

MREXTREMEPC

What a joy this adaptation is. MAPPA's track record is spotty but they really put their whole ass into this. They are letting things breathe and the source material is flourishing for it.

Jesus Gomez

I really enjoy this show, it’sa labor of love specially in the endings that so far I love, it knows how to give weight to events in it without taking away from how cool it is as well, which I feel is rare, Also I wonder if Heather knows about the Evangelion gundams, they’re great to build. I’ve got to subscribe to Japanese magazines because it sounds so much like my shit. Love the podcast and all its iterations, keep up the great work!. Thanks

David Mucci

Thank you for reading and reacting to my comment last week, and Matt for pronouncing my name correctly! Piggybacking off of what Heather said this episode about being on her phone for everything but this show, during the period where I was iffy on this show, I was a little more on my phone than I should have been. But now, I am glued to every frame of animation, and I’m sure I will be that way going forward. And it’s interesting how what the show is now has made the humor shine brighter in my mind. Like, I’ve come around on the turds in the toilet bit — it’s good now.

Andy Hunter

I knew that Makima would die like that, so I wasn't surprised to see her creepily standing behind those gunmen on the train. I was surprised by literally everything she did in the rest of the episode. I never expected a show about a dude who has a chainsaw for a head and whose goals are to touch boobs to have such intense mysteries!

Craig K

Me: Will this hit the same now that I’ve read the manga? Makima while squishing everyone animated with a level of detail I’ve never seen before: Yeah

Richard Glass

This show is an all timer. After reading the manga, I’ve been blown away by how they’ve handled just about everything. Only complaint: Show me more Pochita! I love the mangas chapter break drawings where that little scamp is adorably acting out whatever crazy shit just happened. It really provides some levity at the end of some of the more gruesome story beats. I expected to see them used as intermission stills or something, but I get why they’re not in there with the pace the show achieves. A top show of all time, I just want to see more of that cute little guy. We know he’s in there, makin little squishy hands with his stubby paws.

spiflication

SPLAT FEST: MARINARA VS JAM. I love this show for all the terrible crazy deaths. Being popped like a meat ballon is going to keep me up at night now 😑 it’s so very similar in that way to all you need is kill. Good combo

Brian Ferrara

Is Nick saying “heart rending”?!? Isn’t it heart wrenching?!? Am I taking crazy pills or is he?

Orlando Buttercream

HOLY FUCKING SHIT! Last episode threw me for such loops with it's near-constant tone shifts and plot bombs, but episode 8 is a little shocking baby, compared to the 7 foot, shock-factory of a hulking adult that I find episode 9 to be. The way they animated this episode was such a fucking gut punch; each person squashed into nothing but people-pulp affected me in a major way, not to mention Makima's cold sweat inducing mini-smile, and THOSE FUCKING HAND MOTIONS! My insides felt like a hand-mixer was inserted into my belly, and set to the highest setting, each time she mashed her murderous mitts together. In a sea of shows and movies that aim to shock by jamming violence in your face constantly, THIS one actually affects me ... ike a face-full of ice-cold water and a gut-full of rancid meat. What a fucking triumph.

Nathan Maidlow

This episode was incredible, seeing what Makima can do with her devil contracts was even more horrifying than what I thought it would be. I am an anime-only so my first thought is that she has a contract with the GOD DEVIL or something batshit like that. This episode also has my favorite ending credits yet, this show is a whole ass meal and I can’t believe they give us the dessert of a new beautifully animated music video at the end of EVERY EPISODE

James Brooks

Have Makima’s eyes been discussed at all? I don’t recall that only she and Power have the weird red/yellow eyes being brought up. Are they the indication of a fiend? Both her and Power seem pretty devoid of any emotional connection to their feminine body parts if it helps them get what they want (i.e. allowing Denji to cop a feel) which you’d expect from a devil that took over a woman’s body and has no connection to it.

Erik

This doesn’t happen in ep 9 but I love it that the kitsune hand gesture that Aki uses to summon the fox devil is the same as the nWo/Bullet Club “too sweet” (I also love that Baby Metal use the gesture a ton in their shows)

Matt

Am I the only one considering watching this show during their lunch break today when it drops at 12 because they can’t wait? Lol

Dean Smiros

Maybe this comment gets read before the record, but I just watched 10 and it's fucking great that Denji is fully recovered without any explanation/visualization of if they had to go get his bottom half or just give him blood. Also amazing that he is "dead" at the end of episodes 8, 9, and 10. I'm really into it but also where could the escalation go from here? Dead by gunshot to the head, dead by being chopped in half, killed 21 times as part of training, presumably all by a kitchen knife. We are 10 episodes in and Denji has "died" at least 24 times and I feel like that just needs to be stated.

Chase Tatum

I agree, this show is bonkers in the best way. Every time I think I get a read on what kind of story this is going to be, it jerks the steering wheel in an insane direction that still always feels like it fits.

Austin Arnold

The head smooshing reminds me of the episode of hunter hunter where Killua’s sister did the same thing to people who didn’t follow her commands.
