This movie was imprinted on my brain and my best friend's brain in 1996. It has shaped me in ways I haven't fully realized until recently (when I got back into anime and manga while listening to this podcast).

I saw this at a summer camp when I was 11 or 12 and it horrified me! (Now I love it.)

I still remember seeing this VHS in a Blockbuster and the words "Neo Tokyo is about to explode!" on the back, with an image of a giant explosion. I didn't fully understand the movie when I saw it, maybe at 12 years old but I kept watching it constantly. It's still one of the most visually amazing things I've ever seen.

AKIRA, much like EVA and even CSM currently, was a benchmark of the medium showing how far you can extend. Otomo thinks about new ways to make things look great, Metropolis and especially Steamboy, are underlooked masterpieces.

I watched Akira for the first time when I was 5 in Hong Kong (Chinese dub). I think my parents assumed it was a "cartoon" so it would be fine lol. I remember finally rewatching it when I was a teenager and realizing where all my dreams about old babies came from.

Having worked as a sound designer for animation, I just wanted to comment that this film has one of my favourite sound design moments in any film - which is the choice to have the shot where Tetsuo hallucinates his guts falling out soundtracked with complete silence. It makes that moment hit so much more viscerally than if you were to hear a big juicy splat. Akira is a masterpiece on every level, and the manga is even better.

Lol I illustrated a chapter of bartkira when I was in highschool - the wildest scrappiest project I’ve been involved in to date.

I would also argue that Akira looks like hypebeast fashion because of Kanye West’s obsession with the anime and his contributions to cont. fashion. Unfortunate that the man has imploded

Man, I truly appreciate the technical beauty of this movie, and it’s cultural relevance, but story wise it just doesn’t do it for me. I know I’m in the vast minority.

I first watched Akira when I was 14 after a wake. I was at my dads house hanging out with a friend and my dad just turned it on to entertain us and walked away. We were both horrified, but I love it now! I was amazed at how many references of it I saw in media after. Definitely need to rewatch it.

I am a rare person who has read the manga and never seen the anime. When Nick said Akira was a bunch of different parts in test tubes or whatever, I was really confused. In the manga, Akira is a child, not separate body parts.
