more improv talk please! Matt, any good stories with Jake? yee-haw!

I enjoyed the last of these films quite a bit, interested to see if anyone else agrees!

Maybe its because I watched the movies before show but I genuinely love both. I think they are both good and interesting. It kinda sucks to hear them called failures. The animation of the movies are super impressive. I like how different the 3rd one is. I've watched the show and the movies a bunch.

Registering my endorsement for the "The Gang Sh*t on Improv for an Hour" one-shot.

One aspect of the movies that I find fascinating that doesn't quite come across in the series of Eva is the idea of someone's art taking over/consuming their life - basically the Eva characters (especially Gendo) trying to kill their creator/God (Hideaki Anno). Or I might just be projecting my own feelings of being overwhelmed most times trying to write fiction.

Sucks that you already called them abject failures in episode 1 of 4. Can’t wait for 3 more episodes of that. Guess I don’t have to listen tho. 3 is the only one with a bad Rottentomatoes score and 4 received near universal critical praise.

Brock Landreth

I really love these movies and I just hope there is a willingness to engage with other viewpoints than “this sucks and is an abject failure” because I don’t think it is!

I watched the first two rebuilds, loved them, then watched the third one when it came out, hated it. Then 10 years later i rewatched the first three and the 4th one back to back in a single day. And honestly on rewatch the first three all slap and the fourth one is amazing. The CGI throughout sucks though. End of EVA is still the best film by far though

Whenever y'all are looking for the next series to start, I highly recommend Golden Kamuy! It his similar humor and pacing to chainsaw man and is criminally under discussed for how good it is! Also lots of hunky dudes in it!

Nick's speech about Star Wars fandom had real Ginsberg's "Howl" energy: 'I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked...'

Chelsea Margaret Cole

Gonna echo what Logan said, this ep is very difficult to hear. Love the discussion tho, just wish I could hear it better. ありがとう❤️

hao .

I fucking love the third movie. For the reason Heather stated liking about the show. They figured out a way, with my life in a Gendo trajectory to fuck me up and turn me into a clueless Shinji again. Only to call me out as we’ve blossomed into Gendos when the final movie released.

I was having a really shit day until I saw this and now I’m pumped! So glad they are covering the rebuilds!

By the stated original goals for the movies Heather read, the Rebuilds totally failed, and I think if you were someone looking forward to that ambition, then you'd be let down. I guess what I'm trying to say is, I completely understand why people do (not) like the Rebuilds. They are (not) a failure.

BossMoz

Absolutely love these movies, I was looking forward to hearing the gang's takes but it is a real bummer to hear them called abject failures right off the bat. Oh well!

spiflication

i love you all so much. i want you to understand as the C-BEAMS lights actual darkness.. ... .....yall are so fucking cook.

Zackary Whipkey

Also adding feedback for hearing a lower volume on this episode. Glad y'all started the rebuilds though!

I really hate these movies. I know that's always a less interesting opinion than the hater thinks it is, and I really don't want to slag anyone off for liking something I don't. I know some people will argue that that's "the point". All I'm sure of is that the fourth movie was maybe the worst thing I've sat through in the last decade, and that includes watching my grandma die in hospice care. That took months, and not once in that stretch of time was it revealed that another grandma had been built in secret, only to show up in the nick of time and turn the tide of battle. Had that happened EVEN ONCE, to say nothing of six or seven times, I would've thought to myself "Boy, grandma's gradual decline is really starting to test the bounds of credulity." Watching her die sucked, but at least that didn't get a near perfect Rotten Tomatoes score.

The first movie is so much more brutal to Shinji. I feel like without the breathing room and pace of the tv show it feels like hes being forced into this rather than something he decides to do on his own. They have the one scene where he gets back up and uses the positron rifle but the situation is explained to us rather than shown.

Andy Hunter

Some nice beams in here for Matt. But more seriously, when I first saw this movie, I liked it as a somewhat streamlined version of the show's events that I thought might end up being easier to follow. I certainly appreciated new details like seeing how the buildings retract into the ground to keep the citizens safe and getting a better sense of how the logistics worked. Given that the series itself could often be inscrutably dense, I thought this movie worked as a nice companion piece and expected that the entire Rebuild series would be like a version of the show that was easier to understand and a bit more unified in its approach. I haven't seen the other three films yet, but I gather they ended up being something altogether different. Looking forward to checking them out with y'all. --Andy

Does anyone remember the Eva reference that came out of nowhere in One Hour Photo?

Joel Pelanne

I really like these movies! Kind of wild to hear such a negative response but I guess I only have the one brain of mine.
