It's nice to hear from someone like me who still has a lot of love for Lost.

The highlight of this was Heather learning Miyazaki has a new "final" film coming out this year haha

Ripley

[SPOILER] even though the movie isnt great the moment when unit 02 turns into a tiger rules. theres literally no reason for it and i love it

Matt likes them because they are entertaining movies and he shouldn’t feel weird for liking them. Heather and Nick are just being extremely negative and focusing on nitpicking absolutely everything.

My teen daughter watched the films with me first and now we are watching the series, which she’s never seen, because it’s even better in retrospect and explains my repeated ‘that’s not what happens’ throughout the four films. I liked them all, to be honest, but crabby Heather is my spirit animal.

Numlocks

I did not enjoy this movie.

I finished the final Rebuild movie yesterday, and I think I really like them. Are they convoluted and kinda confusing? Sure! Maybe it’s bad storytelling, but sometimes I like watching a movie not being completely sure what I saw. It makes it fun to do more digging and listen to other interpretations.

Matt

One of the things I like about this group of people is they support eachother. And beating down Matt for liking something they don’t is a real bummer.

You guys NEED to watch or read Bakuman! If you want a great “behind the scenes” story on how Manga is made by the guys who did Death Note. Oh man, this is it!

hao .

Rebuild is not a remake, this is a looping story. EoE was a loop and this is yet another. You would all probably love Deviman Crybaby as its a loop that also succinctly retells the original story and punches up the material. But thats not what this is, you shouldn’t watch rebuilds without watching the show and EoE. This is indeed your Last Jedi (shakes fist at clouds). I hated the third movie when it came out, but having the context and the finish line of the final it is so much better. It finally gets to Annos original point of leaving behind Eva. EoE is great, but it is not inspiring you to be a better person its embracing all your faults like a stubborn child. The final message of it is one youd probably feel bad leaving behind as a creator. You all should try to watch the final challenge of evangelion documentary. Alot of your quote pulls were kind of watered down variants of things youd learn from that. Mari became a stand in for Annos wife who pulled him from eva. Freed him. So she had to have those gazongas.

I appreciate Heather speaking to the meta text of the rebuilds but I do think viewing it through that lens can make these harder to enjoy?

These movies gave me a seizure every time there was gunfire and every time there was an AT Field activation and I still got through them all. Tried to use that resolve to get through this episode and couldn't.

Charles Dexter Weird

I thought the 3rd and 4th movies fucking sucked, but there was a lot of cool stuff to look at. But if someone told me years ago that there would be 4 Evangelion rebuild movies and the last two won’t have angels in them I would have just skipped them altogether. I know the angels battles are not the point of Eva, but there was so much wasted time and money on the rebuilds and at the end of the day they aren’t even fun to watch. Boring, hollow and nonsensical 👎

Chris

I agree with the whole podcast. One way I make peace with the rebuilds is that they remind me of a silent film by Murnau, The Last Laugh. The whole thing is a man being crushed, but in there’s a miraculous, deus ex machina type ending where everyone loves him again and all the poignancy comes from the recognition that you’re watching a broken man’s fantasy. The Rebuilds are Shinji’s fantasy. All the shallow and unexplained behavior is because he wants things that can’t make sense. The sexism is because a 14 year old boy is the center of that universe. Seeing everything he ever wanted puts the original series into relief. I appreciate Anno for insisting on trying something new rather simply remaking. … But still …

Heather mentioned the original trailer for 3.0 being entirely different from what came out. Does anyone know where that can be seen?

Matt

It’s funny, because Heather in particular keeps talking about how meta it is and how it only works because it’s metatextual and there’s no actual heart or character development and decisions are made just to make decisions and I’m like “That sounds alot like Rick and Morty”

It's been awhile since I've seen Rebuilds 1-3, and I remember finding them interesting but definitely preferring the series. Then I watched the 4th movie when it came out on Amazon and I was just so confused. I didn't connect to it at all. However, I watched it again when they had their one night only IMAX screening (it was on my birthday so I had to!) and I enjoyed it so much more with the mindset that the entire movie was just Hideaki Anno working out his emotions and relation with the series/characters. I know a movie should usually be able to work on its own without outside context but it at least made a huge difference for my second viewing and I'm curious to hear if y'all had similar thoughts in the next episode.

Cal

Listening to see last few eps really reaffirmed my insane decision to only watch the last 2021 movie, knowing I wouldn’t understand what was happening either way 😅 no context, just vibes, nostalgia and pretty animation 🤷

I can't wait to hear HAC's thoughts on Witch from Mercury's season finale.

Numlocks

I thought EoE was complicated but this makes no sense whatsoever

Spencer Hayes

The series is clearly better but holy shit the criticism here went wayyyyyyyyyyyyy overboard.
