I’m with Nick 100%. Really love the show and look forward to it every week, but when you cliffhanger on the same match two episodes in a row I get like Nick voice: “alright” 🤣

My partner and I are watching the show together and I keep catching myself looking over at them any time a big play or big anime moment happens to gauge their reaction. Turns out we are both 100% bought in to the soccer anime I wasn't sure we were going to like. The changes in animation style during high stakes moments keep giving me Jojo and HunterXHunter vibes. It's good shit.

After growing up on DBZ, where one attack can take three episodes to charge up, I think I've become inured to anime episode stretching. They're not doing a bad job of it either, at least all the characters are still fairly active and there's fun animation.

A hugely underrated moment to me of the last two episodes is pretty much the only time i can remember in this series so far that Igaguri (the guy whose family owns the Temple) has contributed in an actual soccer match by taking a shot from Nagi point blank off the dome. When I saw the shot on Nagi’s foot and Igaguri in the frame I said out loud “get in front of it” and then laughed so hard once he took it off the face, knelt down extremely proud and screamed “I stopped it, damn it”. And then the follow up from Bachira to say “nice blocking with your face” was just peak physical comedy for me. I think it also highlights someone in a sport who may not be the most skilled but is able to help the team just by putting their body on the line and doing what they can to help the team win.

Nick once mentioned that a mark of good storytelling is letting the audience in on where the story is going, but surprising them with how we get there (or something like that). I really enjoy blue lock but I’m no longer feeling surprised. The other team scores, Isagi’s team scores. The other team is about to win, Isagi’s team comes from behind. I think it’s unavoidable — if the show is about soccer, and the stakes are "you can never play soccer again," of course Isagi will find a way to advance. I like Blue Lock a lot! The characters are fun, the animation is awesome, and I feel like I’m learning more about soccer with each episode. But I hope there will be more genuine surprises in store.

I was barely even into anime before this podcast and yesterday I found myself at a bar with 3 friends basically screaming in their face that they had to watch a show about highschool soccer players. What have I become? The show fucking owns and it’s taking ever fiber of discipline I have to watch along at the same pace as y’all. 5 forks.

I'm glad they let the goalie actually block a couple shots in these episodes. But when they were saying how they need to go on the attack and forgo playing defensively, I was kind of hoping that they'd play 10 on the field and bring the goalie out so we can see what his striker weapon is.

I definitely feel Nick when we ended episode 8 in a match with Team V and now ending episode 10 still in the match against Team V. All of the other matches so far only took place over two separate episodes at most, so this one taking double that does feel a little jarring. That said, I'm loving every minute of it. I hope the trend continues and we end up with the very final match of the Blue Lock program taking up an entire season of the anime. During that season, each episode will be dedicated to a different player of the 22 players on the field and the context behind how that player contributes to the match as a whole. No more nameless filler players on one of the teams. Every single player has a name, a backstory, a voice, a look, and a motivation for why they absolutely can not lose.

I wish the table was open for criticism on the show but I feel everyone’s scared to say anything.

My two favorite small things about the show are 1) Without discussing it, everyone immediately knows and uses the new vocabulary. Evolve! Devour! Awaken! 2) There will be brief shots of "regular soccer." No crazy eyes, dramatic poses, or intense shouting, just basic passes and jogging. It's a funny reminder that in real soccer, not much happens most of the time.

I generally like to watch along with the podcast and not jump ahead. Having said that, after these two episodes, if anyone wanted to stop me from immediately watching ahead to see the end of the game in Episode 11, I would have told them to kick rocks.

Nick Wiger.... more like Nick Whiner! Ep 9 and 10 covered the same match, good. I was on the EDGE of my seat cheering on each play. And then the lead up into ep 11, I couldn't stop watching! A+ Writing in from North Toronto, Canada #I'mFromSomewhereBetter
