This is one I won't need to watch along with because I can practically recite the whole show from memory.

Non-anime news: Midnight Diner is leaving Netflix at the end of this month. Check it out, if you haven't seen it.

I was hesitant on the watch order, but after seeing Episode 25 I was all in! This was so unexpected and baffling. I have so many questions.

Heather’s description of the time and place of this show was perfect. I remember working long Saturday shifts at a restaurant in college. The shifts were hard and made me dread the weekends. But if the Haruhi fansub went up that Saturday morning, it was a good day.

I went in completely blind and for the first few minutes of ep 25 I thought, "why the hell did they choose this?!" I couldn't tell if it was purposefully bad or ACTUALLY bad. As it went on and I started noticing the "student film/b-movie" aspect of it and the narrator's comments, I finally got it.

The morning that this series was announced last week, my 9-month-old baby who has been sleeping through the night for months randomly woke up crying hysterically at 4 AM. After we soothed her and put her back to sleep, I was fully wired and unable to fall back asleep. So I decided to start Haruhi and watched ep 25 before getting ready for work. I’m not sure I’ve ever been so disoriented in my life. All that said, I loved these first two episodes and can’t wait to keep watching!

My favorite detail that you guys didn’t discuss in this breakdown was that the intro to episode 1 is in very muted tones, then the first time you see Haruhi’s face it goes to full color.

Anyone else clock the ska jam that plays over the montage of Haruhi quitting all the clubs? Threw me for a bit of a loop to hear that genre in this context, but I dig it!

I just want Heather to know that some of us are excited that y’all are covering this show 😭 and I’d love it if you covered the second season and the movies.

Please end the season by doing the dance!

Joel Pelanne

this shit slaps (show and show about show)

I haven’t really re-watched Haruhi at all since after the 2nd season aired, but I so vividly remember what a wild time it was in the anime community. Heather talking about being unsure if what you’d torrented was the right thing particularly resonated, as I definitely remember having that feeling. I remember being on an unrelated anime forum at the time, everyone just desperate for any Haruhi content they could get their hands on, and sharing anywhere that was popping up doing chapter by chapter fan translations of the novels that inevitably fizzled out after a volume or two.

Niall Olson

seconding that the gang needs to learn and perform the dance by the end of the season

Never heard of this show before, but after two episodes I think I’m a fan already. It’s not often I watch an anime series that is genuinely funny, but so far this certainly is.

Kyle O’Brien

I usually follow the HAC system of watching an episode of anime while I have breakfast, but this show has such a subtle and meticulous nature to its direction and writing, it feels like it warrants my undivided attention. I’m so on board to circuitously make my way back to episode 25.

Numlocks

When you guys mentioned the difference between Kyon being asked to grab boobs and a typical anime character I immediately thought of Denji being asked to grab those boobs. He'd have a freakin heart attack!

I was starting to understand whats going on. Then I watched episodes ordered 2 and 7 and now I'm confused again.
