I was in high school around the time Haruhi first aired and y'all it gripped me like nothing else. I've seen it subbed, dubbed, both orders, read the books, seen the movie, etc. and while parts of it are kinda icky in retrospect (justice for Mikuru) I'll always love Haruhi, show and character. That mix of fourth wall leaning meta, genuinely funny comedy, heartfelt drama and characters, the goooorgeous production, there was just nothing like it at the time and I don't think any attempts at it since have managed to top it. That is, except for the movie. The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya is legitimately one of the best animated movies of all time, full stop. Masterpiece. anyway Boredom is a masterclass in foreshadowing and is so much less effective chronologically where it's just hinting at stuff you've already seen. Like yeah no shit Kyon won't do what he did last time... wink wink

I'm only pointing this out because I'm as old as you guys but Chuck Norris also sang his own theme song. AAANNYWAYYYYYYY

After finishing the episodes last night my roommate, who has seen the show before, asked me what I thought was actually happening. Best answer I could come up with is that Haruhi is like Bugs Bunny in Duck Amuk and everyone else is Daffy.

Is The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya actually Frasier? Is that the twist?

Okay wait, I have to clarify. The episode labeled 1 on Crunchyroll starts off basically in black and white. Kyon bikes to school, he talks about his childhood. And then he’s in class, Haruhi starts to introduce herself, and when he turns around to look at her, he sees her face for the first time in this episode, and it’s in full color suddenly. And the upbeat music starts.

Bring on the Tossed Salad and Scrambled Eggs Anime Opening! Frazier racing down the Seattle Space Needle while Niles and Daphne give fertile glances at each other and then fuck while Grampa flies overhead in his Lazy boy chair, and as Frazier falls off the building, Eddie the dog catches him on his back mid-gallop and a rainbow shoots out of his butt and they fly off into the sunset!

I certainly can’t say that this is objectively the greatest anime ever created, but it is one of my absolute favorites. Top 5, top 3, top 2, who knows. You give me a slice of life show with meta commentary, sci fi elements, funny scenarios, great animation; you’ve got me hooked immediately. The light novels are great, too, highly recommend them.

I somehow lived as an anime fan through the mid 2000’s without seeing this show or having anything spoiled. I’m really enjoying it, but my husband (also seeing it for the first time) is NOT a fan of the broadcast order so far. I’m hoping I can convince him to continue watching it “as intended.”

Nick came up with an amazing summation of the show that felt both like it built off of the information in the four episodes covered so far and is the most likely place the story will go from here, but couldn't remember that the girl who said "don't worry, she's from this timeline" was called a time traveler in episode 1 (or 25... Or 00?). Yuki is also called an alien in that episode, but I assumed all of that was fake for the movie until I saw a 10 year old launch dingers off a college pitcher.

The conversation/my personal relationship to Haruhi Suzimiya really reminds me sometimes of the cultural reaction to Daria. When it first came out/when I was a teenager she was a cool larger than life character. 10 years later/in my 20s the common argument was she was "actually" annoying. 20 years later/in my 30s however I recognize them both as really well actualized teenage girl characters.

These two episodes taught me that Haruhi is the perfect combination of athlete and psychopath where I think she could easily win Blue Lock.

Haruhi is such a... fun show is where I'll leave it for now. I'm on my 5th watch through now and it still feels exciting to go along for the journey even though I know where it leads. There are so many one-liners in the dialog, or little details in the animation that add depth, foreshadowing and just silly laughs. I always find something new I didn't notice before, or probably forgot about. Heather, thank you for the commentary on the meta around Haruhi. I watched the show when it first came out but lived in a cave and avoided other otakus so really had no idea that the show was such a phenom across the world. It's nice to hear about the reception it received and how much it impacted other anime.

Did any of y’all see Hideaki Anno’s Shin Kamen Rider on the 31st? It was both the US premiere and the one and only showing. Tons of fun, super bloody. I love the original series and he decided to go super serious with Hongo’s personality but I loved the camp of the fight scenes and Rider 2. Anno uses a mix of modern cgi with old cheap 70’s camera tricks emulating the original to a really neat affect. 4 forks. Ultraman is the best of the Shin series but this ruled and I hope we get a sequel. For those uninitiated, it’s about a grasshopper man who rides a motorcycle and fights nazi-made animal human hybrids lol. This is a photo of Hideaki Anno in the late 70’s or early 80’s cosplaying as Kamen Rider! https://images.app.goo.gl/NB4UUYHfA4mifsCe8

I was so excited to see y'all doing Haruhi, it's why I subscribed to the patreon. I've watched it 3 or 4 times, at least once in both orders, and I read the novels. I think one thing that still blows me away about this series is the subtle sophistication. You've already discussed the amazing dry humor, and the deconstruction of tropes, but there's also some literary deep cuts and incredibly far-thinking foreshadowing. Please go all the way to the movie, it really ties everything together in a perfect bow.

My girlfriend was around when the show aired, and has seen it in broadcast order. When I told her this was the next series I was watching for the podcast, she asked if I knew what it was actually about or what happens. I said no, and that I knew basically nothing about the show. And then she just laughed at me and said "oh my God, you really don't know huh." So based on the hints we are subliminally seeing in each episode, I'm guessing it's gonna get a little wild. Loving the show so far, it's absolutely hilarious, especially Kyon's attitude and commentary towards everything happening.

The 1980’s lead poisoning coursing through my veins made me irrationally angry about starting at episode 25. However, as someone that has been studying the phenomenon for over 35 years, I immediately fell in love with the next episode. I’ve now become fascinated with the high strangeness of creating a series chronologically AND THEN splice cutting it up out of time Burroughs style to create a whole new narrative

Hyperion and Fall of Hyperion fucking slap - two of the best sci fi books I’ve ever read.

Having such a great time watching this show. I don't have a lot of down time to watch anime but have been commuting to work on the train for hours at a time, and let me tell you I get so worried that someone is gonna look over my shoulder whenever some suss shit is happening to Mikuru.

clearplastichuman

the person who made that frasier and niles animation (worthikids on youtube) also did a clay mation, ranken bass style 70s scifi animation fully in japanese. usually he voices the characters himself, but since he doesnt know japanese he outsourced it to this team of japanese voice over artists and it is my favorite video on the entire internet. it inspired my shitty ass to learn to make 3d animations and my own art etc. the video is called captain yajima and you wont watch it once.
