I love Mikuru, the personal sacrifice she endures to appease a god for the sake of humanity doesn't go unrecognized, however, the sound the voice actor makes when Mikuru sees the dead body and passes out on her feet while Yuki watches her hit the ground already unconscious will forever make me laugh.

What I been Weebin: I work 12 hour overnights and when things are running good I ingest loads of hot anime. I just finished Moriarty the Patriot, working on Garo: Vanishing line and excited as hell now that Golden Kamuy has picked up releasing episodes again after an absence.

Andrew

I really love “Remote Island Syndrome Part 2” because it really shows Haruhi and Kyon’s connection (either platonic or romantic). This is seemingly the answer to the question he has at the end of the last episode. Why is he in the SOS Brigade? It’s because Haruhi cares about and likes him. Also, and It’s been a few weeks since I watched the episode since I couldn’t help but binge the whole show after the announcement y’all were covering it, if I’m remembering correctly it is implied later that Haruhi realized that her theory would work if it was the door opening that drove the knife into the guy’s chest. That would then mean Kyon is more directly responsible for the guy’s death which is why she has that moment the cave. She realizes the solution and then doesn’t like the conclusion she has reached. I don’t know if this is a popular theory, but this could also mean that she may have retroactively made it so the crime was a hoax so Kyon wouldn’t be “the murderer”. Love the show! (also sorry if this doesn’t make sense I’m a little high right now)

What the discord has been weebing gets a little tricky, especially this week, because right now a lot of listeners did a series swap where they put all their favorite shows into a hat and randomly were given a show to watch based on that. It's been going well, lots of fresh discussion between newcomers and the people whose favorite series or suggested series, they are watching. It's like the proof that GetPlayed / GetAnimed attracted an audience that then created a friendly, accepting community to discuss and enjoy new and old creative works together. So definitely worth checking into the discord discussions in those channels and joining the discord if there are people here who haven't already. Thanks GetPlayed / GetAnimed!! PS I like when kayfabe is broken it's very in keeping with the meta and fourth wall breaking nature of Haruhi Suzumiya so maybe the characters influence is starting to be felt on production 😂 Edit: I mentioned this on discord (I'm b_fran there) but the shows I'm watching this season are "Vinland Saga" Been obsessed with the author's work for years, since PLANETES, I have been waiting a long time to see this depressing story. "Birdie Wing" Lesbian! Golf! Mafia! It got a switch game recently too. I love it, probably my favorite spoof sports anime since "Keijo". ("Keijo" is that anime where the characters do like Sumo wrestling with their butts.) "Skip and Loafer" LGBT friendly, has just a wonderful depiction of friendships and relationships, always leaves you smiling. Can be watched with anyone, all audiences. "Gundam Witch from Mercury" A very entertaining Gundam, Suletta is like a little puppy to me. I'm also watching "Bakemonogatari" again since it's being rebroadcast for the first time since it aired in 2009, but I am using the BluRays because the TV version is 1) missing the last three episodes of Bakemonogatari which originally were web only through the studio's website until the BluRay 2) the TV versions are the incomplete because they were rushed through production for airing then properly finished for the physical release. That gambit sort of paid off for the studio, which outsold all other series the year of it's release. It's still one of the highest selling BluRays ever for an anime tv series. The price helped the studio too, because if you want just those 15 episodes on BluRay, even now over 10 years later, you are dropping between $150 and $200. To make the BluRays sell better, the author wrote meta commentary scripts for the cast to perform in character for all episodes and films, which are technically part of the continuity as the series itself references back to the commentaries, as the adaptation went on. Fans finally finished translating all of the commentaries to English with subtitles last year, which took the small team seven years in total to complete. The series itself is a mystery, paranormal, psychological, seinen anime. All the entries titles are puns, and there is a lot of Japanese wordplay throughout (化け物 Bakemono = monster, 物語 Monogatari = Story, so think of it like "Monstory" for this entry) Its problematic elements can greatly exceed what happens in Haruhi in some storyarcs, so it's not exactly one to blindly recommend. Also like Haruhi, the watch order of the series is a big point of discussion, as the Anime Release Order varies from the source Novel Release Order. Yet again like Haruhi, and FRASIER, the voice actors sing their own theme OPs / opening songs, in character. Finally like Haruhi, the story ideas, the character writing and series structure are all breaking the mold. The variety of apparitions, ghosts, beasts, spirits, and other supernatural phenomena, often serve as proxies for the characters emotional and mental issues. When dealing with the heavier topics, when it really counts, I find it handles them extremely well, really earns its praise. Groundbreaking then and now, I'm happy it's getting exposed to a new audience all these years later.

ohhhh I'm so excited for you to watch Melancholy Part 4. It's my favorite episode.

Put me down as yet another listener who would love it if you guys would watch season 2 as well. It's 'Classified Information' as to which part of season 2 I'm most interested in hearing reviewed, but if you know, you know. When I rewatch, I'm always trying to recall how I experienced this show 17 years ago. So much so, that I dove back into my old computer hard drives and dug up the actual fansubs I downloaded in 2006 as the show aired. Plus that saves me the hassle of having to figure out which episode to watch next, as they're already numbered in broadcast order! The best part of "Mysterique Sign" really is that it gives us our first look at something insane and supernatural happening. Yes, the baseball episode had some elements of that, but wasn't balls-out-crazy like the cricket battle was. Seeing Itsuki manifest the fireball and Yuki throw up the forcefield are both "shit just got real" moments where you're no longer skeptical about their claimed origins. I have to agree with Heather that the Remote Island Syndrome arc is pretty weak, but thankfully is the only weak story arc in this season. The remaining 6 episodes ahead are almost all bangers. As for what I'm weebing, well, I'm one of those people who watches a lot of currently airing series. This isn't intended as bragging, but I've been keeping track on MyAnimeList since 2007, and I have over 15,000 episodes of anime under my belt. This past season alone, I've been watching 15 series concurrently, which I know sounds like a lot, but really it's only an hour of anime each day as I space them out over a week. Highlights of this season for me have been Boku no Kokoro no Yabai Yatsu (The Dangers in My Heart) and Yamada-kun to Lv999 no Koi wo Suru (My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999).

What I've been Weebing (warning: kinda long list...sorry): Mashle: Magic and Muscle - I HIGHLY recommend this one. One Punch Man meets Harry Potter. Pretty damn funny. Hell's Paradise - Another one I'd HIGHLY recommend. Insane fight scenes/violence. Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury - This is the ONLY Gundam I've seen, but I'll check out the one Heather suggested. The Ancient Magus' Bride - Interesting story. The premise bothers me though (old man "buys" a young girl to be his wife). KONOSUBA: An Explosion on This Wonderful World! - Lots of comedy. Not as much fan-service as the main series (I'm thankful for this, but others might feel different). Enjoying it thus far. Ranking of Kings - Very touching. Bojji is such a good boy. I cried a bunch watching it. Black Clover - Typical Shonen stuff but I like it. Very fun. Yami is my hero. Naruto - Rewatch minus filler eps. I saw the original run and about 1/5 through Shippuden. Vinland Saga - Just finished Season 2. Brutal/Depressing. Demon Slayer - Just finished Season 3. I read the entire manga and was still bawling like a baby during the season finale. Jujutsu Kaisen - Reading the manga to refresh my memory of Season 1 in preparation for Season 2. Trigun - Reading the manga after rewatching the original series and Trigun: Stampede (not sure why so many people complain about this series, I loved it). Not currently weebing (finished a few months back) but I think Nick and Matt will enjoy the show Buddy Daddies since they are enjoying Spy X Family.

What I've been weebing: Urusei Yatsura (2022) Gundam Witch From Mercury Konosuba: An Explosion on This Wonderful World Demon Slayer

Michael Pemulis

I loved Neon Genesis Evangelion and End of Evangelion, so I watched the three rebuilds. All I'll say about them is that I kept wishing Denji would appear on screen and cut everybody's head off. Haruhi has been great and my favorite episodes so far are "The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina Episode 00" and "Someday in the Rain". I also watched Call Me Chihiro, a live action movie, based on a manga, which was funny and sad and which I really enjoyed. And I love the podcast, too.

MK

What a glorious mess the end of this episode was, looking forward to next week as usual. Not much to weeb about, but I am watching Mashle: Magic and Muscles. It's so dumb and so blatantly steals from Harry Potter. It kinda tickles me to think how angry the show would make you know who, if she had any idea it existed.

Kevin Ela

I’m so happy that Nick brought up “Ya Boy Konming!” On HiDive (tm). It’s so fucking good and your audience would love it. One thing he didn’t mention is that Konming is also an amazing rapper. HiDive (tm) has some great stuff and it’s very cheap but It also feels like they would steal your credit card info. Here’s the opening credits to Konming, take a second to watch them and if this doesn’t get you hyped then idk what will 🤷‍♂️ https://youtu.be/gNn9NxZH2Vo What I’ve been weebin: Kaiju No. 8 (thanks Heather!) Chainsaw Man Vinland Saga Tengoku Damaikyou (Heavenly Delusion) Hell’s Paradise Yu Yu Hakusho

Rachael

The chain reactions portion of this episode was a really nice parallel to Remote Island Syndrome Part 2. 😂 My Weebin' list is so short. I finished watching all of Sailor Moon and needed a break so other than what Get Animed is watching, I've only been watching Mappa's other show, Hell's Paradise. I'm thinking about getting into Gundam next or revisiting some older series I haven't seen in awhile like Escaflowne or Revolutionary Girl Utena.

Scotty Beverages

Strong “Pre-taped Call-in Show” vibes on this ep.

Eddarrd88

im weebin the melancholy of haruhi suzumiya ! I only watch anime that this show does, so please keep choosing good shows!

Dean Smiros

Watching Haruhi made me want to revisit what I was watching in 2006, so I'm rewatching Naruto! Some overlap with the voice actors in the dubs that feels insane jumping between the two shows are that Kakashi and Computer Club prez are the same and Haruhi and one of Konahamaru's friends are too. Wild aestically that they were coming out at the same time, I love Naruto but Haruhi looks so much better.

Spayde

I’ll be honest, I haven’t been watching along with the show - I truthfully could listen to you guys just talk about soup again each week and gladly fork over $5 a month. BUT!…to answer the question, I’ve been weebing: Mashle: Magic and Muscles - maybe the funniest anime I’ve ever seen. Basically “What If One Punch Man went to Hogwarts”…highly, highly recommend it. Hells Paradise - the third point in the triforce of Dark Shonen (along with Chainsaw Man and Jujutsu Kaisen) Demon Slayer - just finished up and it speaks for itself. A global phenomenon.

Arthur Newman

Lol it works fine on my ps5 but I’m pumping work space internet speeds.

Jamie Hill

I’m sure that Haruhi realized that Kyon would have been the killer if it was real as he kicked the door in to drive the knife into the man instead of him falling on himself. That’s what her pause was and she didn’t want to tell Kyon he killed the man so she became “ uninterested” in the cave.

Jamie Hill

Also what I’m weebing is I’ve caught up to the One Piece manga and it’s so hard to wait a month for Oda to have eye surgery and resume writing chapters. I’ve caught up on Chainsaw man, Spy Family and Sakamoto Days manga as well. Any suggestions on reading or an anime I could pick up now that I’m not binging mangas would be appreciated

Sewing Savage

What I've been weebing is Cardcaptor Sakura (1998) I still feel like I've missed out on a lot of the retro anime staples so after finishing yuyu hakusho i decided to check it out. It's a beautiful and breezy magical girl series thats a great intro to the genre. The traditional cel animation is a great contrast to haruhi's digital style as well.

Introcourse

I think other's may have touched on this, but, in regards to plot aspects of Remote Island Syndrome, when Haruhi stops talking while explaining her theory about what happened, it is because she figured out Koizumi's solution to the locked room mystery - that Kyon and Koizumi inadvertantly were responsible for the death. She stops talking because she doesn't want Kyon or Koizumi to know that. I don't think her pause indicates her changing reality and shifting it into a new scenario, as the point of the episode, which may have not been explained well enough in the show, is that Koizumi is willing to do things like this to keep Haruhi occupied, knowing she wanted a mystery. Another main point this story wants to make is that Haruhi would never truly wish for someone to be murdered or hurt, something Kyon says on the end. Or at least, that is what Kyon believes to be true, showing the trust that Kyon puts into her. Anyways, I've been weebin': Mix: Meisei Story Season 2 (Its fine, but I really loved Touch, and this is a spiritual sequel) Oshi no Ko (Which a lot of others are watching) X&Y (A Chinese mystery anime) Urusei Yatsura (The 80s adaptation which Discotek has been releasing on blu-ray)

Gray

what i’ve been weebing is Satoshi Kon’s Paranoia Agent & Space Dandy (Matt it’s the same creator as Cowboy Bebop that has scenes and themes just as deep as bebop but it’s also a horny comedy series)

Mobile Suit Bagera

The slow and fast motion crunchyroll thing isn't my internet connection!!!! Holy hell, the fucking app has been gaslighting me! Currently weebing: Birdie Wing, Dead Mount Death Play, and Magical Destroyers. Tangent: Another listener coincidence, Matt and Nick mentioned The Butcher on the D4 episode of Get Played, I hadn't seen them before, that day I got hit twice.

Kevin Thomas Shane

The frames of animation where Haruhi’s hand slides down Kyon’s wrist to hold his hand are burned into my brain. The intimacy is so real and it underscores why I like Kyon so much as a character. He’s in the typical setup of a harem anime but he isn’t a total dweeb about it. His nose doesn’t bleed comically. He just keeps marching on.

Gerry Canavan

I think Remote Island Syndrome is weaker than many of the other eps but one thing I think is interesting is Kyon and Koizumi’s apparent disagreement over whether Haruhi would actually wish for someone to die. It fits with the ambiguity over that moment in the cave you talked so much about: we can’t get inside her unknowable intentions (which even she doesn’t really understand fully) so we basically have to take on faith that her intentions are ultimately basically good (like Kyon thinks) as opposed to psychopathic or radically indifferent (as most of the watcher characters fear).

Gerry Canavan

PS: Hugely, madly, deeply, endlessly in favor of you all doing season two immediately.

Eddarrd88

This 1st episode was so unsettling because we get those nasty crickets here in NJ. We call them cave crickets and there fucked because they can only jump forwards, typically at you. I would have died instantly if I was there.

Dean Lowdon Clear

I hadn’t watched a lot of anime before you guys started the podcast, just a few shows like Attack on Titan and One Punch Man. I’d likely watched Chainsaw Man anyway, but probably wouldn’t have tried the other shows you’ve watched. I’m currently weebing Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

Stewart Groves

Because I am stupid, the first episode I watched was the part two of the island, and that was a very confusing place to start. I knew almost immediately something was wrong, but maybe it was starting in media res? I have been watching every episode with one question in mind: would this be a better first episode than The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina, and the only 2 I would seriously consider are the baseball episode and the first island episode.

Mirror B

Love the show, thank you guys for all the laughs! I think y'all missed the most interesting part of episode 11 for me, which was the implication that Haruhi didn't want any of her friends to be the killer, so she just created a murder who is presumably still just hanging around the island lol. Also, I've been weebing the original dragon ball and I forgot how funny it was. Really takes me back to being a kid.

Zeon Liberation

You guys missed the best/most unsettling Part of the island mystery arc. The possible creation of a murderous man/creature by Haruhi. She claimed to have seen a figure during the storm, but there couldn’t have been one and in the end scene Kyon wonders is she just fabricated it, thereby leaving a murderer on the island with the “actors”. That’s the real take away from this episode. What am I weebing!? Wow thanks. Started rewatching Cowboy Bebop because of Matt. That show is so good. And nothing new really. I started reading manga though. All caught up on Chainsaw Man and reading The Girl From the Other Side, which I think Heather recommended. It’s beautiful and eerie. Great rec, thanks!

Robotoperator

Ok, now I really just want to see that Shin Godzilla shirt…and the Ultraman….and the Kamen Rider.

What I'm weebing: current on Witch From Mercury (one of my favorites in the last few years), going slowly on a watch of the 0079 Mobile Suit Gundam (I've already watched the 3 MSG movies and Cucuruz Doan's Island when it came to theaters), followed by Zeta and ZZ. I'm most of the way through Junji Itos collected stories (the pride of my bookshelf right now), and soon a buddy and I are gonna start reading Berserk for the first time! Weeb adjacent, I've been watching a bunch of Japanese horror movies including: Sweet Home, Parasite Eve, Battle Royale (to be fair I rewatch this often) and Occult. They're all interesting in their own way and free either on YouTube or with Amazon, worth a watch if you're into that sort of thing!

beatnikbedlam

what i’ve been weebing: way, way too much to talk about here, but i think the highlight of the season for me has been Birdie Wing, aka “The Lesbian Golf Mafia Anime”. i also watch a lot of romcoms and there have been a lot of good ones this season, but Dangers in My Heart and Skip & Loafer are probably the best. i also have to shout out Akiba Maid War here tho, it’s from a few seasons ago and it has not left my brain since. the premise is essentially, “what if the Yakuza games were about maid cafes?” and it’s just 12 perfect episodes of the best kind of unhinged anime bullshit. would really love to see y’all cover it on the show at some point, the energy for those eps would be unbelievable. and i should also quickly shout out Legend of the Galactic Heroes, which i’m watching for the Anime Roulette we’re doing in the Get Played discord!

Scott H [Hugizu on Discord]

I love the references in this series. Since John Carpenter's The Thing is one of my favorite movies ever, I slow clapped at the reference with the 280 million year old alien coming to Earth that's the exact shot from the beginning of the Carpenter movie. *Chef's kiss*

Scott H [Hugizu on Discord]

Also, I've been weebing Attack on Titan (anime) and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (manga). Both great.

Sean Sakimae

What I’ve been weebing: -Haruhi -Hell’s Paradise -The World’s finest assassin gets reincarnated as an Aristocrat -chainsaw Man (rewatch) -Blood-C Live Action based on Manga -Drops of God -Roruni Kenshin -Alice on Borderland Been an anime fan since Robotech (80s) and my love has only grown since 3 of the funniest people in the world started the PREMIERE anime podcast.

wjodendor

what I've been weebing lately, well it's a lot. since I'm doing chemo, I have a lot of free time. Binged the entire first season of the military sci fi series Eighty Six. Haven't liked a show enough to do that in a long time! Seasonal anime I'm finishing up for the spring season: Mashle Hell's Paradise My One Hit Kill Sister The Legendary Hero is Dead! The Dangers in my Heart My Love Story With Yamada-kun at Lv.999 Konosuba: Explosions on this Wonderful World Reading the light novel that the anime Baccano is based on and it's really interesting. not often do you see an anime that takes place during Prohibition in the USA. It's by the same author as Durarara, which is another great show. Finished the Type Moon visual novel Tsukihime from 2000 and started on their megahit visual novel fate/stay night, which launched the massive Fate franchise. It's only 100 hours long ha! Halfway done with FF16, need to finish that up before playing Trails into Reverie on July 7th.

Numlocks

What do you think about the dub of this show? I usually prefer the subs but because of Roku's crunchyroll app I was stuck in english mode for this show and its actually pretty good. I actually preferred it to the subbed version when I re-watched the episodes on an app that works.

Anor Mal Scarecrow

What I've been Weebing: Watching: "Bofuri: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense" - clearly a kid's show, but I'm liking it. "Bocchi The Rock" Just finished. Amazing show about musicians. Reading: "Ranma 1/2" for the first time. I can't figure out if its progressive or offensive. "How do We Relationship?" a very true-to-life lesbian romance manga that focuses on adults and doesn't lean into fan service. Actually confronts Japan's lack of acceptance of same-sex relationships. "I Think Our Son is Gay" about a mom trying to navigate being an ally for her closeted gay son in contemporary Japanese culture. "One Punch Man" "Mashle: Magic and Muscles" "Insomniacs after School" "Komi Can't Communicate"

Andrew Ingram

I’m currently weebing: Demon Slayer, Dr Stone, Mashle, Dragonball, Spy X Family, One Piece, and Haruhi with y’all!

Rae Watney

Recently finished the Nausicaä manga (excellent) and gonna rewatch Akiba Maid War for the third time. It's just so funny.
