What I’m Weebing: Keeping up with Chainsaw Man manga (love it) but also Akane-Banashi, which is about a young girl’s foray into competitive rakugo, inspired by her father. I learn so much about an art form I’d never heard of from this thing! Also, re: Haruhi, so many moments in it remind me of a Godard film. The bizarre camera angles and cuts, narration breaking the fourth wall, and *everything* about the first/25th episode bring that to mind. Delightfully surprised to get that vibe from an anime.

Episode 28 fully validates Heather and the release order watching sequence! It's a good episode, but if after all the weirdness we've seen it was the final episode of the series I think it would be disappointing. After reading everyone's incredible lists last week I decided to up my weeb game, so I caught back up with Dr. Stone and started in on Hell's Paradise.

Asakura is kinda lowkey my favorite character of the series. Not much screentime but oh boy does she make the absolute most of what she got.

I'm excited for Nick to go down a Gundam rabbit hole! There's so much to love out there. (How Did This Get Anime'd special next April, mebbe?)

The Rei and Asuka elevator scene and its consequences have been disastrous for humanity.

I think Rod Stewart is being a little modest if he says he isn’t good at building model railways. Look up the model he’s built in his LA Mansion, the detail is incredible.

Episode 28 has a cozy vibe I could just live in for a while. I’ve really loved this whole show so far, and I plan to keep watching it even if you take a pause at the end of the season. What have I been weebing? Not much else in terms of shows, but I’m reading Akira for the first time. I’m not super far into it but I’ve already seen some interesting deviations from the film. I’m also reading a manga called Talentless Nana. It’s about a group of super-powered kids on an island training to fight the “Enemies of Humanity.” I don’t want to give anything away, but I was hooked after the first issue, and it keeps finding ways to surprise me.

I started watching Gundam: The Origin, too! It is surprisingly dark and I'm really enjoying the political intrigue. I've literally gasped out loud and covered my mouth in horror multiple times. I'm very excited that I'm finally dipping my toes into the Gundam universe.

I'm about to start weebing the latest season of My Hero Academia! Also, I'd previously been wondering if the "mysterious event three years ago" that everyone in Haruhi keeps talking about was when the light novels began being published. Now I'm wondering if, instead, Kyon was Haruhi's boyfriend or otherwise someone that she cared about, and he actually died three years ago. So now Haruhi has created a new reality where he didn't die. It would also explain why the other two female leads seem to have the hots for him even though Kyon himself doesn't have much presence -- this entire reality was made out of love for him. We'll see!

The best line from episode 4 is when Kyon say's "Super Size Me!" when future Asahini shows him her mole. Holy Mole-y indeed!

Weebing Update: I've also started watching Gundam Origins, and like Matt, I was also confused by all the characters, the lore, and the Game of Thrones vibe. Going to watch episode 2 soon. Also, my local comic book store is starting a Junji Ito book club, so I just bought Shiver - the collection of short stories. Previously, I've read Uzumaki and Remina.

Rewatching Haruhi for the first time since 2007, it makes me remember watching it with my friend in college, who had never seen anime before. She liked it so much she started studying Japanese, watched more anime on her own, and then moved to Japan after college. Haruhi truly was an anime gateway drug. She now lives in South Korea with her husband, who she met in Japan. Haruhi literally changed the course of her life. Since college, we've fallen out of touch. Should I contact my old friend and reconnect over Haruhi??

"That's what all that preamble was for?" Really made me laugh.

My AC went out a few days ago, so at home after work, I've been toughing it out until it gets fixed (in a day or so). It's been 90+ degrees inside my house while I watched these two episodes, and I'm not sure if what I saw was the actual show or a hallucination from heat madness. Heather and Matt are cool! Love the pod(s). They're helping me get through this "enclosed space."

Episode 28 was so cozy, it would have been fascinating to have seen this through the lens of a series finale. Speaking of which, it’s interesting that rankings of all time great series finales seem to usually overlook anime. Without entering spoiler country, are there any anime season finales you all would rank as all timers?

I'm more invested in the Ash meta-plot than any other element of this podcast. If last summer's Ash was My Father Zelenskyy Ash, this summer's is Broadcast Order Ash. Careful with that Pokécar, buddy!

Can’t wait til Nick makes it to a Gundam series like Iron Blooded Orphans…he’s not ready for literal child soldiers fighting against the subjugation of a terraformed Mars.

I had knee surgery this week and when I came home from the hospital, confidently put on the two episodes I believed were next in broadcast order. I didn’t realize until I was way too far into this week’s pod that I watched the completely wrong episodes under the confident delusion of anesthesia. I got anime’d. And part of my meniscus removed.

Currently weeb-ing the Rent-A-Girlfriend manga vol 5, and watching Naruto & Demon Slayer
