Is it too late to suggest the comments from the listeners be called ‘Haru talk’?

Peep_My_Meeps

When i first saw it, Haruhi was the 3rd or 4th anime I had ever seen after code geass and gundam seed. Needless to say that the show didn't make a ton of sense to me and it took me another few years to really get into slice of life shows. However the episode Live Alive has always stuck with me because I loved the music, and ive gone back to the scene of them playing many times over the years. Ive realized i really enjoy the music in anime and you guys mentionned the tittle Ya Boy Kongming which made Heather laugh, but if you like J-pop and music festivals, its an amazing show with one of the funnest OPs! Here is the link if you want to have a fun time https://youtu.be/TyqDOOpJlcA

When Melancholy came out, I heard a lot about it but never watched it. But I knew the songs & I'd seen the video of the "God Knows" performance several times. I'm glad I'm finally watching this & haven't had any idea what was going to happen next. This is quickly becoming a favorite of mine. I also just realized that the song was called "God Knows", which makes more sense to me after watching the show. I got anime'd.

Heather said it best, watching "Live Alive" made me feel young too. It reminded me of my high school and our club days. Each club had a table, served/sold food, trying to recruit new members. Watching this ep and listening to you guys talk about it both got me teary eyed. Thanks for getting us anime'd. P. S. I know this is way past, not sure if anybody had mentioned Blue Lock's 1st season ending theme was called "WINNER" by Shugo Nakamura, and the chorus went "Only one winner is enough"

Fun thing: the original Japanese episode previews had Haruhi announcing the episodes in broadcast order, followed by Kyon giving the chronological order. Live Alive is the only episode to have the same placement in both orders, so it went like "Next up is episode 12!" and Kyon says "No, it's actually episode... never mind, you're right." and I love that.

When the guys were trying to remember Tsuruya’s name, it then flashed back into my head that there was that whole gag-manga and anime-spin off of her character, *Nyoron Churuya-san*, a super deformed style where her character just wanted smoked cheese…. https://youtu.be/iGWn4cnJXU4 Living through Haruhi hype at the time in the mid-to-late 2000’s was a wild time. I’m really enjoying revisiting Haruhi some decade and a half on of not watching it, so I’m really glad you guys have covered it and given me a reason to rediscover it. I’m definitely going to go on to watch s2 again as well, and would love to hear the show cover it too.

I’m also loving Heather being super keen to do Gundam podcasts and Nick’s kind of “yeah….. sure… maybe someday” vibe. I’ve been a Gundam fan for about 20 years now, starting with Gundam Wing as a friend had some bootleg VHS tapes, and after that buying various early dvd bootlegs of older seasons before they ever had official releases here in the uk. In the last few years I’ve been picking up blu-ray sets of various seasons and have been considering a rewatch of Universal Century. So Nick starting Origin gave me the kick I needed. So have rewatched that and moved back on to rewatch the original Mobile Suit Gundam. Going from Origin which can be quite serious, especially those last few eps, and straight into 1979’s bouncy opening was quite jarring but fun as heck.

The God Knows sequence had my jaw on the fucking floor. There's nothing this show can't do.

Hello! This audio has been reuploaded to include the God Knows audio lol. Sorry! - Matt

PLEASE BECOME THE GUNDAM COMPANION PODCAST. I LOVE LISTENING TO YOU THREE SO MUCH. And the amount of anime knowledge Heather has is astounding. Please pour it all directly into my brain.

So, after hearing how much they liked the concert Bocchi the Rock is up next?

ryan mcgrath

And I would pay for the gundam Patreon tier.

Kyoto Animation, especially during this period, really are the best in the industry. They really can do it all. No wonder Haruhi chose that studio for production.

I watch the shows for this podcast on my own, but my wife often catches bits and pieces. After “Live Alive,” she said “I can’t believe you’re watching a show with no fighting and normal teenagers.” After I told her that there is sometimes fighting and that the teens are a mix of Alien androids, time travelers, espers and someone who may or may not be God, she cut me off with “Nevermind, it’s too close to bedtime to start pulling this thread.”

I like both opening theme songs of Haruhi, but I don't speak Japanese, so it's difficult to sing along. So, instead, whenever I start an episode, I sing ABBA's "Mamma Mia", but replace Mamma Mia with Suzumiya. Haruhi is now one of my all time favorite series, so thank you for introducing me to it. Also, I watched Redline (2009), and enjoyed it.

William Jones

I was surprised that no one mentioned that the lead up to Haruhi's performance was playing out in the background of Kyon wandering around the festival. You can see the band's first conversation and several times Haruhi and Yuki scurrying around in the background getting instruments and such.

Gamblore

As soon as Matt talked about how much he enjoyed the band. I knew someone had to recommend Bocchi the Rock! Great music and a lot of fun animation.

Nathan Maidlow

Idk if y’all are still looking for what the audience has been Weebin’ but I just binge read all of FIRE PUNCH which has been added to the Viz Media library, it is by the author of Chainsaw Man and is one of the more batshit crazy pieces of media that I’ve read/watched and is very similar to Melancholy in its meta analysis of comics/manga/anime. Highly recommend!

Sexy Grandma's Retirement Home

Fun fact: The Japanese voice actress for Haruhi Suzumiya, Aya Hirano, is also a singer. Not only does she sing the songs featured in episode 26, but the openings to both season 1 & 2 are singles of hers.

As a Hamlet and Haruhi nerd, the Rosencrantz and Guilderstern scene in Live Alive is one I think about a lot. It's worth noting that not only does the play focus on side characters that realize they're in someone else's story (much like the SOS Bridage themselves), but it also contains an argument about the importance of the audience. The Player (who performs the play-within-the-play in RAGAD and Hamlet), is mad that R&G didn't watch, because the performers are nothing without the audience. If you apply this to Haruhi Suzumiya, it may mean that she needs an audience to feel fulfilled. Or, in theories about Kyon, it may mean that Kyon himself powerful as the Audience, aware of the viewer watching through his eyes, and the very entity that gives even Haruhi's godlike power any purpose at all. (The later theory gets more traction when you finish the main story of the first season, the first episode of season 2, the movie, and in the unadapted light novels later in the series)

Nix Null

Also, re:watching season 2. I don't want to spoil anything, in case you all want to go in blind. But there is something that happens in Season 2 that, from the perspective of a podcast doing 2 episodes a week, may be logistically challenging. I think you'll discover it quickly as you go, but you may end up tweaking your format a little bit due to it.

Anor Mal Scarecrow

If Haruhi experiences pathos at the end of ep 26, it is because she subconsciously wanted to experience pathos. She doesn't feel bad because of what she did, she feels bad because she wanted to experience feeling bad. If on any level Haruhi wanted to experience a complex, literary emotion like, "what does it feel like to experience tragedy," it would result in a National Day of Rememberance.

Anor Mal Scarecrow

If you like episode 26, check out Bocchi The Rock! It's on Crunchyroll. Every episode is awesome guitar shredding and character development and humor

Sewing Savage

In 2006 this animation felt like the future.

Dr. Friendgood

I've been weebing Ochi-No-Ko. The first episode is 90-minutes and it's one of the best anime movies I've seen in years. And then there's a whole season of anime that picks up from there! It's got a crazy story and super high-budget animation (especially during pop-star scenes, kind of mirroring this week's Live Alive episode). I recommend going in completely cold, because that first episode is such a ride!

Ben Mitchell

Hard agree that Live a live is incredible - I watched it on the train on the way to work, and I'd only been awake for like half an hour and felt like I was still dreaming! I wanted to learn more about Kyoto Animation after seeing how sick this looked, and learnt all about the arson disaster at their studio in 2019. Do you guys know about this? Holy shit

Robert Carlson

Yuki ghost-typing at the end of The Day of Sagittarius struck me so hard when I first saw it, both on the emotional/character level and in the realization of what animation can do. It was a formative example to me of how much you can say in film without using words.
