just a thought but maybe it should be The MAILancholy of Chain Reactions (blue talk)

I'm weebing these threatening Dutch seagulls. Last episode, when I couldn't decide if they were coming from the podcast or real life, they were making me nuts, but now I'm fully invested in their violent family narrative. Please keep us posted, Heather!

Re: good 90 minute movies, I know you guys enjoyed the original Vampire Hunter D but Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is a genuine banger and beautiful to look at 🫡 also Angel’s Egg if you wanna watch a movie that makes you say “I don’t know wtf just happened but it ruled”

Keirik

hehe I just realised you're covering Endless Eight in August.

As a first-time watcher I appreciate that these set of episodes are really, in a meta-sense, making the viewer go through the experience of boredom Haruhi felt at the beginning of season 1 due to a lack of major variation of the main events between these two episodes. Can’t wait to see where this rabbit hole goes, and I’m especially happy that I can just let Crunchyroll auto play to the next episode for the next couple of weeks without watching outside of broadcast order. PS: Ya’ll mentioned Shokugeki no Soma/Food Wars in a previous episode, and I’m interested to see Nick’s reaction to watching just episode one. Just like Blue Lock is a soccer anime but also a battle anime, this show is a food anime but also ends up being a battle anime but is also at the same time egregiously horny??? A lot of intersections for Nick! 😄

I am already past this arc but watched them while building an SD Deathscythe EW kit and admit that after episode 13 my attention wained. Hearing heather talk about observing the differences in the episodes has me wanting to go back and watch them again with my full attention. Also wanted to throw out a recommendation for a inbetween series episode. Oshi No Ko episode 1 is basically a prequel movie to the rest of the series at around 84 minutes. It was marketed as an idol anime but it really is a case of don't judge a book by it's cover. It is more about the japanese entertainment industry in general, including topics of teen pregnancy, behind the scenes in movie/reality tv production, live action manga adaptation, child acting, cancel culture and suicide. Its on HiDive and highly recommend going in blind when watching episode 1 or reading volume 1 of the manga.

It sounds like the pitcher in the baseball game on TV during the opening scene is getting better with each episode. 1st ep - pitching lousy and fans are upset. 2nd ep - pitching good. 3rd ep - Pitching great and crowd is cheering. Will he eventually strike out the batter by the last ep? Is his subconscious repeating of the same game over and over making his pitch game stronger?

Matt - while you're asking for recommendations, Summer Wars (not sure on length, I believe it's pretty short) is a great anime movie and perfect for the season. Very before it's time and a really fun concept. There's also a ton of DBZ movies on Crunchyroll now and many are right at the 50 minute mark. In terms of episodic anime though, I need to recommend Sk8 The Infinity again. It's a skateboarding anime that I feel was made in a lab for you specifically. Short and sweet 13 episode season and a second one in the works.

Artistic merit aside, you have to have at least a *little* disdain for your audience to pull this stunt.

I’m really enjoying revisiting Haruhi along with the gang, in part because it’s allowing me to enjoy Endless Eight very differently. I remember at the time of airing, I lost interest in the show with this arc. After Season 1 being such a huge hit, the anime community was so excited for more Haruhi and it felt like such a mad choice to fill the majority of the 2nd season with this one storyline when they could have covered more content. In retrospect, I love the decision and am enjoying it a great deal. At the time… I know many felt like it was disappointing to have waited several years for a new season and then mostly be taken up by this plot.

Before watching eps 15&16, I sympathize with Yuki Nagato, but I'm confused by why she is suffering so badly. We learn in episode 8 that she has the ability to sync herself with past versions of herself. We also know that she can communicate with the Information Entity. Now, I can't experience reality in this 5-dimensional way, but she can. Couldn't she get some sort of escape from this situation by connecting with an outside perspective and outside situations? She's not big on using her agency, but she seems to function well when she's experiencing the world. I mean, she likes to read, for example. I think I could endure 600 years of a time loop if I was able to simultaneously download new memories from outside the loop. It's like lock down. I didn't enjoy being stuck inside, but it was made livable through novel experiences, like video games and getting outside.

Anor Mal Scarecrow

The ideal time to loop is your whole life. If you are reborn the moment you die with your whole memory, you could, after a couple of loops of thinking you're insane, completely revolutionize the world. You could introduce strong privacy and anti-AI protections into law in the 90s. You could invent the iphone in the 80s. If you got good enough at remembering the physics and engineering required, you could revolutionize the world. Each iteration of being a being a super genius would bring new technologies earlier. You could probably end up immortal and living until the heat death of the universe, only to float alone in the void until you decide to unplug yourself and start it all over again. Then, I guess, try golf?

Matt, you gotta see the movie “Your Name”, I’m sure Nick and Heather agree. Also heads up, Ninja Scroll is just porn.

We've seen Asahina in various levels of distress across the episodes, but nothing hit me harder than her voice the first time she calls Kyon. Props to the voice actress because it was legitimately upsetting.

SchniedelWutz

What's the deal with anime boys lusting over girls in Yukatas? Does the Japanese government sponsor those episodes to boost nationalism in the youth?

So disappointed no one on the podcast knew that Mirror B was a clear reference to Pokemon colosseum

When I started watching episode 12 and they were doing all the summer activities on such an insanely short amount of time made me so intensely nostalgic for my time spent in Japan it almost physically hurt. I thought I had selected the wrong episode when I started watching episode 13 of Haruhi this week. I can't imagine what it must have felt like waiting each week for the next episode. People must have been going crazy. I started noticing the different shots, voice inflections and clothing differences right away and was completely on board with it. The amount of work and love that went into this show is very apparent and it is quickly becoming an all time favorite with me. Thank you for introducing this show and for talking about it! The Get Animed commentary is a big part of why I end up loving the shows you watch.

Matt, you should watch Inu-Oh. A spectacular rock opera from one of the best directors around, Masaaki Yuasa. I have to admit that I gave up on the endless eight when it was airing. Upon revisiting it I have learned to really appreciate what they were doing and how each episode changes. But at the time it felt like watching the same episode over and over again and I just got too bored to continue.

Ted Kord

I binge-watched the first 7 episodes of the Endless Eight arc in one night and I'm not sure if I'll ever be the same

Mathew Quitney

Pompo The Cinephile is the perfect 90 minute anime film, with the fact that it’s 90 minutes being a major plot point

Anders M. Korn

Heather forgot a very important detail!! The female characters breasts get slightly bigger with each new episode. THIS IS VITAL TO THE PLOT.

Console Canon

Has Matt seen Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro? That might be a great one-off episode to cover both the Lupin III franchise and Hayao Miyazaki. It's such a great adventure flick, and stands on its own outside of the property.

Hi Heather, Matt, and Nick. Last weekend I went to an anime convention for the first time in years. It was great. My favorite part of going to anime conventions is checking out the artists area and seeing folks' original art. Do any of you have any good anime convention stories? Or, what is your favorite aspect of anime conventions (if you've gone to any)?

David Mucci

I appreciate that there’s (so far) enough variety in these episodes to keep things interesting, and it helps that the characters remain so engaging and funny. Side note, I do think Haruhi is the funniest anime I’ve seen yet, but I just watched the cowbell episode of Utena and that may give some of Haruhi’s episodes a run for their money…it was like ITYSL “Brian’s Hat” levels of hilarious

Angels Egg is 75 minutes and I highly recommend it. You can find it on YouTube I believe and it has such a beautiful symbolism and a really pertinent message. probably one of my favorite movies I've ever seen. I also watched this fantastic movie called Son of the White Mare recently, which is Hungarian made, but I think pertinent enough to anime fans and extremely beautiful. 90 minutes long, available on Kanopy (fantastic free library card streaming service).

Andy Hunter

I certainly respect the gumption of presenting these episodes the way they did (though I'm also intrigued at the light novels' presentation of a time loop from the perspective of someone who *doesn't* remember it all). But it didn't entirely work for me. I can deal with episodes that don't move the plot forward, but episode 14 also didn't seem to move the characters forward -- either in terms of their knowledge or their emotional arcs. Holding off full judgment until the Endless Eights are done to see if the different details paint a different picture for at least us, the audience.

Supermegadeathpunch

Really missed out on: Self proclaimed "classified information".

Also before I forget! Heather should make her seagull journey into a joke segment called “The Melan-gull-y of Heather Anne Campbell”

Noah Vasseur

Are the next episodes 15 and 16?

If youre interested in seeing a snapshot of the forum responses, i reccomend red bard on youtube. She has a great breakdown on the reaction episode to episode.

Hello hello, Heather, Nick and Matt! I’ll admit, I was one of those people who fell off of season 2 back in the day once I saw what was going on. But now, I’m excited to watch them all! I had an amazing time watching on 2 screens, playing 2 eps at a time, with the previous ep being on mute. It was fascinating seeing what lined when Edit: I absolutely love that Heather also watched with 2 screens!

Kevin Thomas Shane

I also watched these episodes as they aired. I love the arc today, but back then man, it was rough. We also have to remember that season 2 was broadcast in chronological inside of season 1. That means by the time we got to Endless 8 part 1, we were 12 weeks into a new season in which we’d only seen 1 episode (Bamboo) that was new to us. Then to learn that some number of episodes of this new batch of 14 (probably at least 8), depicted the same events? Rough! 14 years later though I think it was worth it.

Dean Lowdon Clear

I had to stop and check I wasn’t accidentally watching the same episode again!

dbone_69

The first time I saw these episodes was about 2 1/2 years ago, I had the flu and thought I was losing my mind.

I want my baby back baby back baby back ribs.

I know the details of the episode were kind of overshadowed by the feeling of dread setting in realizing that the audience is Bill Murray in this version of Groundhogs day, but there was a Kyon line in there I couldn't believe Heather Nick or Matt didn't mention! When Kyon is taking off his frog suit in Endless 8-2, he says " Now I know how it must have felt for Unit 00 after getting hit with the beam"

Its understandable that picking up on the little things might be hard to do with the storm cloud of truth looming over you, and you feel that you the watcher may be in for as bad of a time as the hero of a time looping tale like Bill Murray's Groudhog Day, but there was a very notable Kyon line in there that I believe is worth mentioning! When Kyon is taking off his frog suit in Endless 8-2, he says " Now I know how it must have felt for Unit 00 after getting hit with the beam" I even took a screenshot of it, so good!

Sexy Grandma's Retirement Home

Matt asked for anime movie recommendation and I'm here to deliver! I'm sure everyone has already seen them, but if you haven't you HAVE to watch Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle. If you want a romance, you can't go wrong with A Silent Voice, 5 Centimeters Per Second, and Your Name. If you're looking for balls to the walls action, watch Redline. Looking for a family drama that takes place during World War II and has a stupid amount of research behind it? Watch In this Corner of the World.

I don’t know how this happened, but I thought these were the first two episodes of season 2, so I watched these first and was a little confused but intrigued.

Douglas Gale

I think they learn it’s a loop on every time. Yuki knows but won’t say anything unless asked bc she’s just an observer. But Mikuru will always use [classified information] to check in with [classified information] in the future and discover the future is missing. Which leads to the park meeting. My theory is Episode 12 is the first time through the loop. No one seems to express deja vu and Mikaru doesn’t see the future is missing.

David Morningstar

These episodes take me back to watching fansubbed anime with my little sister when I was in high school. I remember her saying "isn't this the same thing that happened in the last one?" And since the episodes were already so mixed up after the new broadcast order, I had to scramble to make sure we were in the right place.

Deandre Gibson

When I realized what was happening I burst into laughter realizing how pissed people were who waited week after week to basically watch multiple directors cut of the same episode for weeks
