My favorite thing about Endless Eight is each time someone gets hit in the head with the beach ball at the pool, it made me laugh every time!

Keirik

I'm so Mikuru coded tbh. Whenever something goes wrong my first instincts are always to cry and classify information.

I think the Endless 8 may have had a subliminal effect on me, as right around the time I binged through it I decided to quit my pleasing but repetitive job and give myself a new challenge, which scares the hell out of me. Thanks for putting me onto this and EVA, two shows I'd probably never have watched otherwise. Now I'm gonna celebrate my new job by watching Akiba Maid War for the 8th time. :)

Since Code Geass keeps coming up, I'd love to know Heather's thoughts on the show. I really enjoyed it and I think it's got the best giant robot fighting outside of Evangelion. Maybe it's because similar to the Evas, they're animated more like living beings than machines.

I can imagine how frustrating it was too watch this week to week. It feels like a troll, right? Personally, I don't mind how repetitive it is, it's about being along for the ride. It takes very literally the childish idea of wanting summer to last forever, and that concept alone makes it an interesting watch. Or I feel like Ted in I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream and I'm just used to the torture by now. And anyway, if you think about it, we're all trapped in our own Endless Eight, our own Groundhog Day...it's called SAMSARA!!! ...I'll see myself out

I really liked Nick's comments about how the apathy of Kyon and the others towards Haruhi's antics is what really enables the time loop to continue for so long. I've seen a lot of complaints online about the group's lack of initiative in trying to resolve the situation, but the manner in which Kyon and the others respond does seem very consistent with their characters as established up until now. I do also wonder if Yuki, Mikuru and Itsuki choose not to intervene because they see letting the time loop continue as safer than risking potentially universe-ending consequences by trying to break it.

I just finished the season and felt the need to comment that I solved it during Endless Eight #2. Feelin like a hundred bucks over here. I also decided to join Nick on his Gundam journey because I also have largely ignored Gundam as a boring robot show; holy crow was I wrong. Finished Origins and started the original series and I’m hooked. The Island Iffish stuff????? Holy shit. (Nick and Heather will know what I’m talking about)

I’m finding this run of episodes kinda boring…

Ryan M

I like that the Crunch Roll episode descriptions seem to be more and more annoyed as this arc drags on. "Get it together, Kyon!"

Anders M. Korn

For those interest the Evangelion Manga is more the product of Evangelion Creator Design and Gainax founder Yoshiyuki Sadamoto. It was an opportunity for him to tell his version of the story, and it does get eventually get very different.

David Mucci

Maybe I’m still on a high from season 1, maybe it’s that this arc is more bearable watching two each week instead of one, but I’m still really enjoying this series, as well as admiring the ballsiness of this arc. So much so that I got the first light novel and started reading it, and it’s a delight!

The most frustrating moment for me is when Yuki is running down all the loop variations and Kyon cuts her off at the same part every time! Like, let the robot girl who actually knows what’s going on finish talking!! She might get to something super useful C’MON KYON!!

Michael Pemulis

I watched a six episode series, Angel Cop (1989), that must have had a big impact on Hideo Kojima. It's violent, sleazy, goofy as hell, and a fun watch. Also, a villain named Lucifer who makes a woman's blouse and bra explode open.

Christopher Hageman

Nick, it’s only going to get worse. By the end you’ll be questioning your sanity lol

Blair Kuehn-Smith

I wonder if the reason Kyon continues to not say anything is that he fears what the consequences could be if he says the wrong thing. I appreciate the show taking a big swing with this Endless Eight arc, but between having a one year old kid and a full time job, it’s hard to find time to watch TV so watching Kyon not do anything five episodes in a row is killing me! That clock ending to Endless Eight V was dope though and I still love this show.

This season makes me want to close my own fucking loop, JESUS. I was already mild on season one and this isn’t helping. While S1 had elements I LOVE like the whole premise, broadcast order, the humor, etc - ultimately it just left me flat. Nothing is really progressing in the show. Now season 2 has taken that to a LITERAL extreme. I’m a dumb mecha man since birth and not normally a slice o’ life chap, so maybe this is just normal? Nothing happening? No real character development? And NOW it’s the same episode for 8 episodes. I ain’t mad about it but wow what a choice. A bad choice certainly but one all the same. Maybe it’s a meta commentary on slice o’ life, I don’t know. but I don’t give a fuck about different clothes or different masks: show me the two damn times they didn’t go to the Bon festival!! Show me the loops when Kyon was hit by a car. Is this just some anti-free will narrative? How are there not loops when someone plunges a fork into Haruhi’s throat? Haruhi is a monstrous entity. There has to be a godhead in control of it all. Maybe I have issues but I would have tried to kill God very early in the loop. As someone who thinks it’s every species moral and spiritual imperative to kill their creator and apotheo their evolution; I realize my own internal bias here…but Why is everyone else Okay with Haruhi’s prison reality? Including YOU!

Comrade

I definitely think Haruhi doesn't know that they are looping or knows that she is god. Growing up Christian the idea of God was always tied into omniscience. But, I think the idea of an all powerful but not all knowing god is funnier. I haven't finished to show but I think Haruhi is a version of the deist clockmaker god, she set the universe going but isn't aware or directly involved in it's ongoing running. Also the Endless Eight feels like a prank that I love but it would have been maddening waiting a week at a time.

Andy Hunter

Am I off base to think they're hinting that Koizumi is gay? I wonder if that's what he's implying when he says he's "lacking a certain something" to be the one to say "I love you" to Haruhi. And then when Kyon tells Koizumi not to stare at him -- I think EVERYONE in the brigade has the hots for Kyon. Also, I think the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Cause and Effect" is a great way to do a time loop story where the characters only vaguely remember the previous loops.

Ryan M

I think this arc would have been more tolerable if it were shorter. Show the first Endless Eight episode as is. Then in the second epsiode show them finding out the loop. Then have one - maybe two - repetitions of the loop. Then resolve it in episode 4 or 5. And then they could have titled it something like Endless August, to signal to viewers how long it was going to be. Dragging it on for 8 epsiodes with no substantive variation was too much.

Sexy Grandma's Retirement Home

I've never seen the second season of Haruhi, I'm not even following along with the podcast, and I love the movie. In fact, I bought a copy of the movie and I don't even own the first season. Basically I'm saying I don't think seeing the second season is required to enjoy the movie. Am I missing some of the references or deeper meanings in the movie? Probably, but it's not like I was completely confused and not able to follow along either.

Michael Pemulis

It's not a great personality trait, but I'm enjoying the frustration that some people are experiencing, watching the Endless Eight.

ColtonFS

As maddening as this arc is, I really appreciate it as an exercise in visual storytelling. It's cool to see how many ways the animation team has decided to present the same information over and over. I wonder how the production went for this. Did they send the script to several storyboard artists and ask each for their interpretation, or did the same storyboard artists have to keep thinking up different ways to vary the same story over and over? That would be an interesting challenge.

Zachary Born

I am a huge fan of a slow burn, and I unironically love Lady in the Water by M. Night Shyamalan. It was designed as a bedtime story. I have started it countless times and it knocks me out like an off switch. My biggest complaint about my access to Endless Eight is that I can't set it up to run without the intro and outro so that I can let Haruhi give me the same bedtime treatment.

Zeon Liberation

Sometimes Heather’s pauses are so long after Nick or Matt make a joke that I think my phone stopped working.

Jayce Beasley

CRUNCHYROLL JUST FUCKING SHOWED ME FUCKING ENDLESS EIGHT IV INSTEAD OF FUCKING ENDLESS EIGHT VI AND I DIDNT FUCKING REALIZE UNTIL IT WAS FUCKING OVER FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKKKKKKK

I want my baby back baby back baby back ribs.

I am embarrassed about my comment last week, because in this podcast episode now heather is bringing up the eva reference that I said wasn't referenced. Maybe I watched them out of order? This whole thing is so confusing!

As a chemist, I think my favorite part of this season is that it is a piece of media organized like a science experiment. Endless Eight I serves as the control group, setting up the default conditions. In a science experiment, you demonstrate your results by changing variables outside the control group and noting the differences. Then you reset to default conditions and repeat ad nauseum. The subsequent episodes does just that. Although the plot stays mostly constant, the animators demonstrate how changing specific variables such as music choice, lighting, blocking, and scene composition can really affect how the atmosphere and genre of the episode is perceived by the viewer. All in all, this season is the media equivalent of a mad scientist’s experiment and I love it.

Anor Mal Scarecrow

I think the problem with the Endless Eight episodes is that they went the exact wrong amount of hard - it was either too long and weird or not long and weird enough. I would have loved to see some "Too Many Cooks" energy in this series of episodes. Every episode only covers one day, but how about an episode that shows repeated elements from 100 days? I would love to hear the hosts pitch an over-the-top gimmick for a new Endless Eight episode, knowing that the story can't deviate but the presentation can go wild. Personally, I think they were too tame. They should have pushed the envelope more.

Numlocks

So Yuki says over and over again she is only allowed to observe. But last season she literally changed reality so they could play better at baseball.

Question for Heather: where does Evangelion fall in the Universal Century Gundam timeline? 🤭

Luke Lamar

First time watching this along with the pod, really enjoyed this arc as a piece of art. There was a moment in one of the middle ones where there's like two sets of Kyon and Koizumi at the midnight meeting that was really funny. General question: Does Koizumi's line of "lacking something for the role" when it comes to romancing Haruhi seem to be confirming a queer coding of the character or am I reading too much into it? Also, Matt, if you love the look of Jujutsu, you should watch the first season outro (at least the one that starts by like episode 3). It's a certified banger of a song and the stylization of the characters is really cool
