Sigh is my least favorite story arc in the whole series, Endless Eight included. The novel version straight up blows the biggest chunks so massive respect to KyoAni for somehow adapting it into something halfway watchable. Honestlyyyy imo season 2 is kind of a wash aside from the first episode which is SUCH A BUMMER but... it's all part of the journey to the Disappearance.

Having watched ahead, I have to agree!

I can feel myself disagreeing with the consensus again, but I thought these episodes were fantastic. I find Haruhi becoming more unhinged and starting to lose control to be fascinating and it’s really getting me interested in where that leads for the movie. The cracks are also starting to show on Koizumi, and there’s a potential explanation for Mikuru — are her reactions real, or is she subtly manipulating Kyon? These being the last “new” episodes released really convinces me of the fact that this is the logical end point of the series to set up for something big in the movie. I’m still totally on board with this thing, and I can’t thank you enough for covering it, as I don’t know if I would have come across it any other way! (Also, my go-to impression of Nick is “oh, one HUNdred percent.”)

Was anyone else getting cult vibes when they spiked Asahina’s tea and Haruhi was directing the “romance” scene? I fully agree with Kyon about everything spiraling too far. I really wish we could dive into Koizumi’s perspective cause he was just about to do something he could never come back from. Like was he thinking it’s okay there’s no way Kyon will let me go too far or is he a fully brainwashed cult member. I did enjoy that the last episode, Kyon has a one on one conversation with everyone. We see where everyone stands about what is Haruhi. Asahina explains Kyon shouldn’t believe Koizumi and that Haruhi is just a powerful irregularity. Nagato gives more clarity about what Asahina was trying to explain, but speaks in hypotheticals. Koizumi shows up at Kyon’s house late at night, and kind of gives excuses about the way he’s been acting. He try’s to make Kyon doubt Asahina about her intentions but then plays it off like a joke. He then explains that the phenomenon that Haruhi creates is proof that she is a god. I didn’t really like the vibe of this scene. Later, Kyon and Haruhi seem to be having a date/meeting, which is a nice way to end the the broadcast order of the show. I’m looking forward to the movie.

The cat speaks! I'm finally feeling like they wasted our time this season, we could have gotten so much more Shamisen!

Based on your reactions to Vinland Saga, I'm curious about any thoughts you all might have on Berserk. Can be the manga, the original anime (from 97) or the newer movies/series. I feel like Heather might be the only one that has read/seen it. The 97 series was my first full anime series watch through (almost 20 years ago). Brutal and bleak, to say the least.

I didn’t hate this final arc, but it was definitely disappointing after all the highs of season 1. But all in all, I still really liked this show. I’m curious if Heather has watched The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-Chan. When searching for the movie on CrunchyRoll, I came across this series which seems to be some sort of “what if?” type of show centered around Nagato. I’m curious if it’s worth watching.

Last week, the impending implosion of Stitcher Premium sent me here to get my Get Anime’d goodness. This meant I suddenly had 4 new episodes of the podcast to listen to and 11 episodes to watch before that. Decided to marathon all of the Haruhi episodes first but since 7 of those episodes were endless eight, it made me feel insane while I did it. After I caught up on the episodes, I listened to you all describe the same endless eight episodes over and over for four hours. Remember, all of this is happening in late August. It was like I was in a time loop too it freaked me out lol

One reason this ending is such a bummer is that, given our understanding of where this arc takes place chronologically, it reinforces that Haruhi has not really grown or changed much, if at all, through the series. The spiked drink and averted non-consensual love scene is arguably the worst thing she’s done and she doesn’t show any penance. I think there’s a case to be made that she’s a worse person, emboldened by the Brigade’s understandably scared enablers.

Very excited to hear about Heather and Nick both getting into Vinland Saga. I'm working my way through it at the moment too and it's truly an incredible show. Fun fact: The "Vinland" of legend is theorized to be modern-day New Brunswick. When Leif Erikson is telling stories about Vinland in the show, I like to imagine that he stopped by a Tim Horton's in Moncton one time and just really wants to go back so he can re-experience the joy of washing down an apple fritter with a double double.

I think a big part of what makes Haruhi Suzumiya stick with me is how many times you can say "oh this is unique" or "oh, nothing like this happens in the rest of the series". It covers a surprising amount of different themes, plotlines, emotions, without ever feeling out of place.

Kaiba!! do some shrooms and watch Kaiba man

I miss the No Context Get Anime’d Quotes instagram and twitter account. They were the sprinkles to this sundae of a podcast.

FYI to anyone with photosensitivity who plans to watch the movie. There's a strong stobe light effect towards the end.

So interesting to note that for all her power Haruhi cant entirely subvert free will. Kyon who arguably she created to enable her worst impulses got so fed up with her he almost hit her . I think the reason she's so manipulative is because she( subconsciously at least)knows she cant entirely control people

With regards to Matt talking about the bird in Lost who called Hurley’s name, it got resolved off screen: the Hurley bird got the worm.

While I'm glad I watched it in broadcast order along with the show, I have to admit that given what I know now I think any rewatch I would do chronological order. I think this fixes a lot of the problems you guys brought up, and finishing out the series with the amazing Live Alive, Yuki having some fun in Day of Sagittarius, and Someday in the Rain ends the series with everything back in harmony.

Something that hasn't been said outright about how season 2 of Haruhi felt back in the day is that the waiting between season 1 and 2 felt awfully long at the time (looking back at it wasn't that much really). Season 1 ended with no announcement for Season 2, and so season 2 premiered with so much hype, not only for new Haruhi stuff but because of the promise of so much good stuff the anime was potentially be able to use from the source material. Instead, we get 8 out of 14 weeks of endless eight and a lackluster arc afterwards. At that point the exhaustion settled in. Currently Kyoto Animation is focusing on original anime or adaptations of their own published light novels, and so season 3 of Haruhi, is likely never to be made.

I really enjoyed season 1 and thought it had some excellent, iconic episodes. I can see why it was a phenom at the time. However, having watched season 2, I'm just so over this show. Haruhi makes me so frustrated, and I'm pretty burnt out on how she treats everyone. It hasn't really been an enjoyable experience for me, other than listening to the podcast episodes, which I love...but I'm glad I have now watched it and formed my own opinion of it. I guess at least, we all suffered together. Gonna watch the movie, but also...very excited to move on to the next series.

Also, I know you wanted to do something more modern next, but for the next classic...I think it would be really cool to watch Cowboy Bebop or Samurai Champloo along with the podcast, as those are two classics I've never seen and I think there would be so much to talk about. And Matt is watching Bebop anyways! For a more modern one, I've heard great things about Hell's Paradise.
