Hoo boy I've been WAITING for this one. Haruhi is hands down my favorite anime and I almost fell out of my chair at work from pure excitement when y’all announced it. First, Kyon's breakdown is legitimately upsetting as this series has danced with depicting psychological trauma before but never went full tilt like this. Add in the warning from our usually snarky, devil may care narrator of “What happens to me isn’t funny at all” makes it that much more ominous. You can really feel the fear and heartbreak over what is literally the center of his universe vanishing. The scene where he grabs Taniguchi by the shirt, calls him a slimy octopus for holding out, and slams him against a desk at a mere mention of Haruhi's name is one of the best scenes in the movie IMO. Secondly, I love how all the brigade members' characters are at least slightly altered (aside for one). Yuki obviously has the most drastic change by having the capability to emote. She goes from robotic to a typical glasses wearing quiet girl trope, but never strays away from doing Yuki-like things (reading sci fi novels, inviting Kyon over for tea, etc.). Haruhi offers a much more subdued version of her character eventually breaking out of her shell and reverting to the old Haruhi when Kyon indulges her seemingly repressed fantasies of the extraordinary. Koizumi is pretty much the same, but it's nice to see him be the prominent figure in Haruhi's life (adding the detail of being in love with her) even if it's short lived when Kyon shows up (the "makes me jealous" line as the train passes is incredible). It’s also refreshing to see him, who is usually the one putting Kyon through the most bullshit, be SKEPTICAL towards his alternate timeline theory while still doing the most Koizumi thing possible of drawing a fucking diagram to try to decipher it. And Mikuru is... just Mikuru. Finally, Ryoko Asakura is fucking terrifying as a main antagonist. My favorite shot in the whole movie is right after she stabs Kyon and she starts spinning around in slo mo like a princess, splashing BLOOD on Yuki's face as she reiterates "This is exactly what you wished for". Her lilty vocal inflections (in the dub she has a slight transatlantic accent) and cutesy mannerisms give me a deranged Snow White vibe, which works wonders for her inevitable heel turn. Overall there aren’t many constants in my life, but one that will always stick is me popping in this movie every Christmas Eve with a cup of hot chocolate. 8/8 would torture myself with that arc for this masterpiece any day.

I just wanted to mention before we moved on to FLCL that the reason Kyon had a reaction to Haruhi naming the cat Shamisen. Cat skin was tightly stretched over the sound box of the Shamisen instrument.

Keirik

So, when I said Ryoko was my favorite character despite her only being in like three episodes all those months ago... this was why. She gaslit gatekept and girlbossed like no one else can

Cal

Started watching Vinland Saga per the Pod’s recommendation and now I’ve almost finished season 2. It’s definitely a tone shift and I fully understand why fans of s1 might not vibe with s2 but imo it’s a masterpiece. 🫡 it’s an all-time anime for me 🙏

I enjoyed the movie infinitely more than S2. Yet, I keep thinking Kyon’s decision seems uncomfortably selfish: that he live a cool, exciting life as God’s maybe-boyfriend, while poor Nagato is cursed once again to be a sentry after she already wished to be a “Real Boy”. Throw in Asahina’s pain and suffering along with all of Haruhi’s other victims and I think: I don’t know Kyon, my dude, is it all worth it? If Sisyphus had the ability to be like, “hey Kyon I’m done rolling this big rock if that’s cool with you” and Kyon was like, “nah, I love it, keep it rolling.” Seems not cool.

Really enjoyed the movie, but I don’t think anything would make up for how tedious The Endless Eight was…

Ted Kord

Kyon would've been eliminated from Blue Lock on day one. Btw totally agree with Heather that this movie justified season two

Well normally I do agree with Matt's take on the length being too long, I watched this episode in Peru with my newly adopted daughter. Since newborns need to eat every 3 hours, this was the perfect length to keep me awake from 1:00 to 4:00 a.m, when I would have to wake her to feed her again. Unfortunately, while calmly holding her and giving her her bottle, that insane out of nowhere stabbing took place and I nearly dropped my baby. Joking of course, I did startle her and made her cry, so thanks the disappearance of haroi suzumiya, you made the baby cry! My wife was not happy, but I was happy about the ending of this truly awesome anime. I can't wait to see what we all Weeb next. Thanks for the show. Ps. Zom 100 is fucking amazing!

I'm almost certain the Breaking Bad essay Heather mentioned was this one: https://thenewinquiry.com/walter-white-supremacy/ Good essay! I'm an Endless Eight freak and I loved the movie. I hope they make more Haruhi someday, it's a shame that the reputation of the series tanked so hard when it was still doing such interesting things...

Please make the Heather Ann Campbell Blue Talk song the new intro for Blue Talk. Omfg, I'm crying I'm laughing so hard. 😂

I've kind of been casually interested in anime for a long time, with exposure over the years to things like Death Note and Hayao Miyazaki's films, but have only recently been getting into it in a big way, in no small part thanks to Get Anime'd. I'm grateful to have been introduced to Haruhi Suzumiya as result - it's at times hilarious, horrifying, frustrating, delightful and absolutely insane, but never forgettable. And I feel that the movie really just puts a bow on top of it all and makes the challenges of season 2 so completely worth it. From Haruhi's boundless enthusiasm and Kyon's dry wit through the series, to the fascinating artistic choices made by the show's creators regarding plotting and structure, to Kyon and Yuki's final melancholic conversation amidst the snowfall in Disappearance, it's a show that's gonna stick with me for years to come.

Chris Cooke

Loved the movie and characters so much I was tearing up hearing you all recount events for Yuki and Kyon overcoming personal barriers. Thank you to the crew for pulling me through Haruhi in it's entirety. It was a show that was always part of my weeb of shame list for wanting to watch but never made time for... That being said I've absolutes adored FLCL forever now, rewatch it annually like Heather does Evangelion, and can't wait to hear your takes on it. If you like it don't give into the hate regarding Progressive and Alternative. They're wonderful sequel series in their own regards and worth your time. I think they just caught flack for staring female protagonists largely.

So pleased to hear Nick and Heather still enjoying Vinland Saga. It’s one of my fave shows of the last 5 years for sure. S2 is of course a shift but I think it only elevates the show into something far greater, making it more impressive that it can succeed as a series with such different tones. S2 was magnificent and maybe worked better watching it week to week than binging, but I loved it’s narrative and especially the sense of building anticipation, and where it takes and develops Thorfinn’s character. Hitting the midway point and the events that follow that… oh it was exciting watching week to week. What an absolutely beautiful, exhilarating and devastating series all at once.

Rin Manzano

A fun little nugget I noticed was at the ending conversation between Kyon and Yuki. There is a shot of Yuki, from the eyes down, holding her hands up ponderously as it snows in the background. You will find this exact same shot when you rewatch the opening from season 1. Also, upon rewatching the season one opening, I also noticed that a LOT of scenes from the middle section foreshadows plot elements in this movie.

Morgster180

I'm about halfway through The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan, the spin off anime series set in a world similar to the one in the film, which is like a much cuter romance remix of the original show but in episode 10 there is a fascinating dramatic tone shift that i think makes it totally worth watching for fans of the series and characters. I would recommend watching the whole season if you like light charming romance anime but if it's a little too twee It's definitely worth just jumping into Episode 10 then you can decide if you want to non chronologically go back and watch 1-9 or just experience this great parallel Yuki storyline which is killer.

This movie made me love Erik Satie when I first watched it. I was so captured by how well the music captured the sentiment of the movie, Satie’s music is just so visceral. He’s one of my favorite composers now.

Richard Glass

After opening the email and realizing I’d need to reference a friggin spreadsheet to watch this show correctly, I fell off the wagon. My stitcher (RIP) even caught up to where I was and my Patreon lapsed…but I came crawling back. Was it worth it? Absolutely. Live Alive was one of the best episodes of any show I’ve seen, and the movie was a perfect end cap to the series. Love you guys! Thanks for guiding me through another banger. Stoked for FLCL!

beatnikbedlam

i watched the first couple episodes of Haruhi. really enjoyed episode 0, had to tap out in episode 2 when the sexual harassment really got going. had a good time listening to the pod tho! sounds like an interesting show, it’s just not for me. (i also didn’t watch Blue Lock so i’m excited to be watching along with FLCL even if it’s a show i’m sort of lukewarm on)

Zeon Liberation

I have to agree with Heather that the movie absolutely justifies the endless eight and really the second season. I have to disagree with Heather that the reveal of who caused the new timeline had to be Yuki. It felt like it could have been any of the SOS brigade. I was leaning towards Koizumi given Asahina’s warning to Kyon in the second season. I thought Koizumi created a world where he and Haruhi could be together. What a heel turn that would have been! I ended up really loving the entirety of this show because of the movie but it oddly reminds me another anime, School Days, but with a sci-fi twist. It’s not what you expect going in and everyone is awful. Please never watch School Days for this show.

Will Hoff

Loved the movie. The main reason it works for me is its central question: Kyon asking himself "But didn't you have fun?" On one level it works metatextually, as he is the audience surrogate, and the movie asks us, "Didn't you like the show? Weren't the highs worth the lows?" But beyond that self-indulgent reading, it also succeeds because ultimately it's asking the same question so many stories explore: "Sure, life is suffering, but don't you love it?"

Anor Mal Scarecrow

Curious whether there was any discussion of watching "The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan" after the movie.

Kevin Ela

I’m so happy that y’all love Vinland Saga too. With the completion of S2 it truly may be the best anime. The card that appears at the very end of episode 26 of Season 1 made me bust a gut laughing.

Kevin Ela

When Kyon’s alarm clock went off for the 2nd time my blood ran cold. My heart sank in my chest, blasted through the floor and injured my downstairs neighbor. All of my hopes and aspirations turned fallow. I thought we were back in a time loop. I cannot believe what this show has done to me.

Grant Prusi

In the podcast episode, you had trouble remembering the person Kyon got the library card for. It was early in the show when the group split up to search for strange occurrences and Kyon and Yuki just wasted their time in the library. Yuki wouldn’t leave without a book, so Kyon helped her make a library card so they could leave. This was such a significant event to her that in the altered timeline she created in the movie, she retained that event and re-contextualized it as how she and Kyon met. That meet-cute is even retained in the spin-off “The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-Chan,” which takes place in that altered timeline, or at least one very similar to it. Thank you so much for covering Haruhi. I loved this movie, and the series. The attention to detail is phenomenal both in story and animation. I’m already considering rewatching it.

Anders M. Korn

Overall neutral fan of Endless Eight (it is difficult to watch, awed it actually exist as an art statement), huge fan of the Sigh (shows how much the characters grow as young adults/teenagers), overall fan of Disappearance. In my opinion the first 2/3rds is amazing as Kyon realizes that he can sometimes be the spark/the organizer, the Haruhi, in his life. Likewise I like how the supporting cast realizes that despite their somewhat separate missions and hardships they do care about each other as friends, even in alternate dimension. It shows that even though human relationships can be (very) difficult sometimes they are worth it, especially as Yuki trades the trauma of the endless eight to the trauma of being alone in High School. The final third of Kyon realizing he likes being around Haruhi has less impact on me however, as it is something I feel has already been established multiple times already, especially in season one. Still a great movie! I do think it also acts as a great ending to the anime series. The newer novels are a lot of fun, but I think in respect to all the original anime team members, a majority of whom including the Director passed away in the 2019 arson attack a season 3 should not be made.

KidKimura

I think the correct viewing order is season 1 in broadcast order, completely ignore season 2, then go straight to the movie. Then any time someone even mentioned the Endless Eight you put your fingers in your ears and start screaming until they either stop talking or leave.

Kevin Ela

Bully Matt into watching Vinland Saga

Kevin Ela

Heather- just watched the Adam Scott Twilight Zone episode and “fly me to the moon” was featured. Was that you?

KidKimura

On Heather's comment about Endless Eight being necessary to understand Yuki's motivation in the movie, I don't necessarily think that's the case but my experience is probably not typical. Through even the first season I've felt a strong connection to Yuki as a character, growing up as an autistic kid who was not diagnosed in childhood, I really related to feeling like an alien android who desperately wants to interact with others like a normal person but doesn't feel capable of doing it. The Endless Eight arc definitely adds weight to that, but there are several moments in the first season as well that give the impression that Yuki has the desire to be like a normal teenager. The entire mechanism for returning the world to normal relied on Kyon caring enough about the SOS Brigade and their friendships to turn the world back. The conversation Yuki and Kyon had at the end of the movie about what he would do to fight for her as his friend really hit me in the feels.

KidKimura

Also I somewhat feel that Haruhi as a character is a stand in for the show and the subtext is that despite our frustrations with season 2 we are still fans of the show and still want it to exist. I know the story comes from a light novel so that may not even have been intentional, but the thought that this might have influenced the story choice for the movie makes it much funnier that they still haven't done a 3rd season. They're like "Sure that was frustrating but you still love us right? Great, well fuck you no more Haruhi for you"

ryan mcgrath

FLCL, if you like Eva and chainsaw man but you like to consume all of your entertainment through horny fever dreams.

Questions about doing this podcast in general: How confident do you feel in your "anime literacy" at this point? Do you feel like being aware of anime tropes is important to understanding & enjoying anime? How much has your knowledge of anime changed your enjoyment as you have gotten deeper into this hobby?

Ziggy242

I watched the movie last night love it. After I saw the end credit scene I cried myself to sleep no joke. Yuki is one of the sadist characters in any media. Literally broke me

Michael Pemulis

I've watched the first two episodes of FLCL. It has to get better, to be so revered, right?

David Mucci

This may speak to some deeper personal problem with me, but not only did I love this series, I loved Haruhi herself. Her sleeping next to Kyon all along was the sweetest, cutest thing and cemented the character as one of my all-time favorites.

Andrew Ingram

That was a really beautiful movie. I wasn’t expecting it to be so good. I couldn’t have turned Yuki back I don’t think.

oom

So thankful for Heather's take here (and for Heather! Making me love anime!). This movie was beautiful, sad, sweet. I felt things. Actual heartbreaking feelings stung my eyes! In concert with season 2 (esp. but not exclusively the endless 8), just an incredible work of art that will never be duplicated. Love the show! Grateful to you all.

Sssiiimmmooonnn

I didn’t watch along with this series, I find anime hard to get into if I find the art style unappealing. And the look of this show didn’t click for me at all. Still it was fascinating to learn about this series that was at one time a huge hit but is now relatively obscure, and some of the swings it took sounded truly wild. Of everything you guys discussed, the endless eight arc seemed like the most interesting / original part of the show, but I’m glad I didn’t watch it myself. Sounds like a trek.

Kevin Nix

I specifically ordered a Blu-ray copy of Disappearance and watched at home before this episode of Get Anime'd premiered, one thing that caught my attention during the movie that I wanted to share was the absolute blast of audiovisual information when Kyon first finds Haruhi walking with Koizumi. His entire journey in this new reality has been shown with no music and muted colors and Haruhi re-entering his life is like his world is in stereo again and the score got so LOUD on my TV during that part. It's not exactly subtle but it's very effective, shout-out to KyoAni for almost making me cry when that happened. RIP Yasuhiro Takemoto

GoonScape

I didn’t watch the series or the film, aside from the Endless Eight 😅 The artistic choice and animation sounded so wild I couldn’t help myself. And I absolutely loved it.
