Rewatching this reminded me of hiding my anime fandom for fear of being labeled a pervert while wanting to show everyone how awesome it was. First 2 eps were pervy and awesome and I still loved it...so maybe I'm just an awesome pervert. Hopefully I'm not but I'm excited to revisit this series!

James Schiller

Love the show and the music. The Pillows have been a constant in my playlist after all of these years. The opening guitar riff from Riding on a Shooting Star has been my ringtone for years.

Thomas Heiderscheit

Rewatching these was such a nostalgia trip as one of the first animes I watched. I have vivid memories staying up late (around Naotas age) to watch this, Trigun, or Inuyasha on adult swim and being totally confused about what was going on but still very enthralled. Glad y'all are covering it!

Keirik

ohh I haven't watched this since anime club in high school. Eyebrows Guy can still get it.

Dean Lowdon Clear

It’s really hard to find this show in the UK. Found episode 1 on YouTube, but can’t find episode 2 anywhere.

Brock Landreth

As someone who’s called this show Fooly Cooly for 20 years (thanks Toonami!) I’m always shocked and thrilled to be reminded of the Eff El See El contingent and I salute you all.

MK

Watching this on Toonami back in highschool, I was the one who needed a big ol' head bandage. Because this shit blew my mind!

Transfem Surge!

Still my favorite anime of all time. I have bought this series numerous times, I love progressive and alternative, and I patiently await grunge and shoegaze. Not sure if you all know but back in the days of 2006, Burger King hosted a "Have It Your Way" contest where the winner could pick a night's Adult Swim Lineup. A person named Ed won, and they loved FLCL, so on Adult Swim that night they picked all 6 episodes of FLCL, and it played on loop. I would have done the exact same thing.

Transfem Surge!

Correction, FLCL Grunge apparently premiered on September 9th, gotta find a way to watch it.

Transfem Surge!

Watching the series with the commentary has the director answering the question of "Why The Pillows?" to which he says "Nobody had heard of, which fits the bill" more or less. He's then asked "Do you think FLCL helped increase their popularity?" - "No I don't think so" 🤣🤣🤣

KidKimura

If I buy a Rickenbacker and pretend I just really love Motorhead will anyone believe me?

Buddy Jones

Crazy awesome to find a connection to Chainsaw Man with this series with the writing on cigarettes. Easy revenge!

Prior to this podcast, I had only watched like 2 or 3 anime and this was one of them. I have nostalgic memories of staying up later than I was supposed to and watching this on Toonami in middle school. I only ever watched the dubbed version, so watching the subs is a cool change of pace! Also, the pillows absolutely rip. Edit after listening to the episode: my last name is pronounced KEEN-Smith.

Nick is right about the last of us 2

I can't believe how HORNY THIS SHOW IS!!!!!! This show would have attracted me like a moth to a bug zapper if I was allowed to watch Toonami back in the day. A+ Also, I'm reading the Light Novels for Haruhi Suzumiya, and so far they are really good. I wish the cover art wasn't just an Asahina bending over and showing off the goods, because now I cannot read during my lunch break at work without looking like a creep!

With one of my first paychecks in my teens, I bought FLCL along with a bunch of full bootleg anime series online and it has been one of my top 3 favorites ever since. I’d come home from school some days, put the DVD on and just let the series run in the background and listen to the incredible soundtrack by The Pillows. In fact, to simulate those vibes I think FLCL is going to be my background show for the next few weeks to watch along with you guys. As a side question though, do you guys remember having any big self-indulgent purchases with money made from your first jobs? Bonus pic of the aforementioned haul and some familiar faces: https://imgur.com/a/h9AHCIc

Since you brought up wrestling anime, I want to recommend the comic book, Do a Powerbomb. It's an American comic rather than a manga, but it definitely has manga/anime influence. It's only 7 issues, so it's a pretty quick read. It's such a fun read and does an excellent job of adding real stakes to a story about pro wrestling.

Joshua Laguna

Wow. I’m so happy you guys are doing this series. Similar to Heather, this was a huge anime for me, pretty much informing most, if not all my future tastes in anime. Adult Swim showing this, plus Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, and then Fullmetal Alchemist down the line were there but not like this one. This was probably the first piece of media where I started doing deep dives and rewinding the TiVo to catch the quick edits and dialogue. The themes of going through puberty and coming to grips with maturity, mixed with robot fights and space pirates checked off all the boxes for me! And the Pillows! What a soundtrack! My PSN is even NeverKnowsBest00! It’s just one of my all time favorites and can’t wait to hear what you all think of the rest of the series!

Alex Swickard

Matt! Great job guiding the ship! 🫡 Rock on, King!

I'm curious how different my thoughts about FLCL would be, if I'd seen it when it first aired; because I struggled to get through these two episodes. The animation, storytelling style, and the music really grated on my nerves. And it's disappointing, because I'm about 20 years beyond my phase of hating on something, just because it's beloved. But this show made me long for Haruhi's endless summer of urine soaked public pools and bullying pretty girls. On a positive note, I'm halfway through Wolf's Rain, and it's strange and set in a lonely world and it's great.

Rachael

I listen to my podcasts on 1.25x speed to save on time but oh boy, do I wish there was a way I could watch FLCL at 0.5x speed so I could maybe understand what the hell is going on.

Kevin Ela

Vespa is both Latin and Italian for wasp, it’s not a Japanese pun. Matt has probably also seen the pokemon Vespaqueen.

Benjamin Francis

Echoing Lark's comment no media does disaffected youth like the first FLCL. I want to also point out all of the people around Naota are like, unwell? And he has no idea what to do about it.

JoeyGuy7

I love the dub because as an English speaker it emphasizes the difference between haruko and the other kids. The kids talk like people, and haruko is bugs bunny.

JoeyGuy7

FLCL bravely asks the question "what if a kid got a boner"

Nathan Maidlow

Watching this for the first time, a kid who grows penis-like horns from his head from which robots erupt to cause mayhem is Freudian to say the least

Mobile Suit Bagera

Yes! So happy you guys picked this show. I love FLCL the way Heather loves Eva. The music, themes, style and general vibe of the show resonated with me so much.

Nix Null

WRT Mamimi and Naota's brother: Baseball is a huge deal in Japan, and playing in the American Leagues is a dream for baseball players. Naota's brother is a local legend. Naota and Mamimi both idolized him, but it looks like he's left both of them behind. He might not have told Mamimi about his GF at all, but the letter to Naota, his own brother, is literally just a postcard. They're both dealing with being abandoned by their hero. Also, as a teenager, this show did irreparable damage to my taste in women.

Sllew

The Game Boy sewing machine is referenced in the post credits scene of episode one. A device I've only heard referenced in FLCL and Get Played just last week when Heather was talking about the National Video Game Museum. Fun coincidence. I'm pretty sure I've re-watched FLCL more than any other show. The short runtime certainly helps. But also the music, style, and pacing make it such a comforting easy watch. It's a treat to hear Matt and Nick watch it for the first time and have a completely different experience to when I watch it now. It's been too long and I've re-watched it too many times to recall what watching it for the first time was like.

Leelu Baloo

I have a theory that we all weren’t fed dark meat as kids bc all of the adults were keeping it for themselves.

Leelu Baloo

Heather’s “I like Japanese Curry” line is good.

Richard Glass

I miss Napster. Could only get dial up so downloading this OST it took like a week and a half. Worth it. The Pillows rule.

Andrew Ingram

FLCL taught me that women are scary.

Sexy Grandma's Retirement Home

Hearing Nick and Matt react to this show gave me a big stupid grin on my face recalling my own first experience with this show. Can't wait hear what you all think of it when you get to the end. Possible next anime to watch: Golden Boy. Don't think Heather will enjoy this as much as the boys, but it's another overtly horny 6 episode show that, I think, would be a real entertaining discussion. Alternatively, I'd recommend checking out a show called Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi. A single season, 13 episode, show that has a little bit of everything and is still a great watch. There's action, drama, humor, and yes, fan service. It's also overflowing with references to anime, movies, video games, and all kinds of other pop culture.

Adam Curtis

Matt's connection of FLFC to Chainsaw Man I think is extremely on point. Both of these shows, on the surface, are pervy wackadoo violent shows about idiots. Once one has overcome the influence of the Media Literacy Devil (one of the primordial fears) one sees that these shows are ALSO deeply meditative stories about growing up, living with trauma, and finding meaning in an absurd world populated with terror and fools.

XRedGambit

I haven't listened to this episode yet, but I'm very excited for the chain reactions of FLCL : Fool Talk. I'm finishing Haruhi Suzumiya and listening to your endless 8 finisher. I should be all caught up from being a stitcher only person. Watching this makes me want a Groundhog day but where maybe some other person realizes they are in the loop but have no connection to it, or maybe Ned Ryerson has deja vu through all the loops. As for FLCL, it's the first weird anime I watched back on adult swim. The music is on point and I bet nick has something to say about the credits. All I can say about your show is "now this is what I call pod casting"

Ziggy242

No offense to the people that like this show but I’m not liking it. I hate the art the characters come across as annoying or whiny. I have no idea what’s going on or why I should care about these characters. The last couple minutes of the second episode we’re kind of all right though.

VHSMIA

I’m so excited Heather has reached the 2nd season of Vinland Saga! It goes full Gundam!

Sam Mitchell

Shoutout to my friend Gerry who got me hooked on your podcast back at the beginning. I’ve watched anime since I was 10 (2004) but I missed so many of the series you guys have covered. I’ve liked or loved every single recommendation so far - FLCL included. Thanks for doing what you do ❤️

Tmacc

I...am gonna put my "hot take" and say, I do not like FLCL. I don't think I "got it" the first time I watched it. The show just didn't vibe with me, and I've always thought it was a bit overrated. Much of it is a bit too over the top for me, personally. However, the music and art style absolutely fucking slap. One of the best soundtracks in anime ever, and fits the show's vibe perfectly. I might not love the show, but I love Nick, Matt, and Heather, and anime in general, and therefore I'm gonna rewatch along with you guys and will report back after the second watch in case you guys want to know if it landed better for me this time around!

You should check out Ergo Proxy and Real Dive

ric charl

Ok ok ok, I've never felt so strongly about commenting as now. FLCL, wierd as hell. Chicken thighs ALL THE WAY, let's fucking go.

Anders M. Korn

It's like mtv, it's like an awfully young wife, it's like a dream thing, it's like something you do with your hands, it's like a vacation, alienation, japanimation. It's that Tomino thing where you call it Gundam but really it is just giant robot anime.

Seth Bullocks

After listening to your WWTHTAW pod and having all this Weezer context, I agree with Matt that the Pillows sounds like Weezer. Love the crunchy guitars! PS. I saw them live at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley recently, and they sounded so much better live! Spoiled with so many Pinkerton songs

Andy Hunter

Still unsure if I'm going to keep giving FLCL. Episodes 1 & 2 might as well have been designed specifically to annoy me. Characters talking over each other ad nauseum, music drowning out the dialogue, characters getting right up into the "camera." Glad you're all relatively into it, at least.

XRedGambit

So I've finally caught up since I was behind and stitcher premium member. I have seen this anime a few times since it was ran consistently on toonami/adult swim. I've even watched it all on it's own since I would miss episodes if I didn't DVR them. But this time I'm taking the plunge and watching the Subs. Still great. While pretty much all the adults act like kids and Naota doesn't like it, it does seem true to me. He's a kid taking on a lot of responsibility and grew up too soon and maybe also is easily embarrassed so he's doing everything he can do not get embarrassed. While I was an "adult" when this hit for america, it still resonated with me. The music is on point. The themes spoke to 20 year old me. I was married and living half a country away when I first saw it. This was the 1st weird show I ever watched. Also I did pick up on the indirect kiss for the 1st time, because of Steven Universe. Didn't know it was a thing before, but it does make sense.

The first time I tried watching this in college it lost me halfway through the first ep, was too weird/frenetically paced and nonsensical, yet 15 years later I found myself watching the whole thing on acid and it was the closest thing I've had to a religious experience as an adult. *This* time, halfway through the second ep I stopped, went to sit outside, and thought "I have absolutely no fucking idea what I'm watching but it feels really important somehow." Shifting gears from trying to understand it (protip: just don't) to just letting it sweep me along for the insane ride made the experience that much more exhilarating. Having been about the same age as Naota when it came out (and also listened to Pillows-esque stuff at that age) and having shared a lot of the same frustrations in wanting to be taken seriously by adults, older girls, and even myself, I found myself swimming in *those* feelings again, but also the joy and simplicity of my life at that time. I've rewatched it like 8 times since and it's so dense with symbolism and metaphor that I regard it like Heather does Eva --- every rewatch reveals new shit and I wish I could go back to school just to write term paper after term paper about it.
